I don't remember how I did the math. But my options for having health coverage and a job are either only work part time for minimum wage, or get a very good paying job with affordable insurance. There's no middle ground.

That's actually been a serious problem in America for decades. It isn't just medical care either. Often stuff like food assistance goes away if you get basically any job. There's a very real possibility that getting a minimum wage job can turn off benefits entirely and make it cost prohibitive to eat and pay rent.

During the first year of school when I wasn't full time for the whole year I made just enough the year before to have to pay $400 for poo poo insurance privately, as I didn't qualify for obamacare. The year after I didn't make enough and couldn't do obamacare because I qualified for medicaid but Illinois took TWO ENTIRE YEARS to get back to me to say "sorry you don't qualify, try for obamacare", so I had to pay $580 for an even shittier plan than the $400 plan, which didn't cover the $2,000 in medical tests I had to take for clinicals. For 3 months this year I was able to get decent coverage under obamacare because of some creative number crunching for income until I got a job with benefits and hopefully never have to deal with that garbage again.

American health care insurance sucks, but state run insurance is even worse.

Here, you have to work at least 20 hours a week to get food assistance. But if you make more than $350/week gross, you don't qualify for it. So if you work full time, or even 35 hours/week, you have to make less than $10/hour.

We had a Bruno's in Atlanta. It was the nicest grocery store I'd ever been into up until that point. I have no idea what other locations were like, but here they were going for the upscale market that Publix would devour a couple of years later when it entered the market.

Publix not only nailed the whole upscale supermarket theme to a tee, but they also made it uniform throughout the entire chain. I have yet to see a Publix that was as run down as some of the Kroger stores I've been to. Kroger seems to be a crapshoot as far as quality goes.

Brunos: I remember my family occasionally going a good 20-25 miles out of their way just to shop at the Bruno's in Hoover because of how nice it was. Even the Winn-Dixie Marketplace that opened closer to home wasn't as nice.

Publices get scummy if they don't have much/any competition to keep them on their toes. Still probably not as bad as the worst Krogers I've ever been in, but those are a dying breed.

They do not know where to put their carts. People at Walmart have more spatial sense and I didn’t think that was possible.

Kroger absolutely dominates my city, with some Food Lions peppering the area. And of course the Wal-Marts.

Wegmans keeps encroaching further and further south, but I don't think they can do the "buy up old stores" thing now that they have, in northern VA at least, the reputation for being so big you can practically see them from orbit like the Great Wall of China. You just can't squish a Wegmans into a dying Food Lion space, but lord knows how this upstate NYer would love to see them try. Kroger has their regional HQ here, though, and I wonder if that's why Wegmans has picked, for example, Charlottesville and VA Beach over Roanoke or Blacksburg.

Whenever I'd drive back home to NY, it seemed like every fourth semi was a Wegmans truck. C'mon, we're right on I-81, just keep driving a little further south!

My Wegmans now that I've moved into Syracuse proper is one of the pre-big remodel stores. Except it just got remodeled to the last design like five years ago. It's tiny and the layout is exactly what I remember from being a kid and I love it

They can absolutely shove one of those into a food lion spot and imo they should. Spread the good word of Wegmans.

Oh, I spread the gospel any time I can. I chatted with one of their reps on FB a couple months back when I had to settle a bet with my boss, and clamored for getting one here. Back when my mom was dying of cancer and I had to go back to Liverpool several times to watch her waste away, when I was crying and in need of comfort, I loved having that big rear end Wegmans on Rte 57, less than a mile from her house, ready to feed me at any hour. And make me crack up over the train set they had running over the bulk candy section.

Also, my husband worked for Trader Joes for 8 years, and they treat their employees incredibly well. Support them with a clear conscience and confidence if you have one nearby.

This sucks as a mall but all you need is to add an auditorium and you have an incredible convention center specializing in trade shows. Set up a shop in the back rooms that has the exclusive right to prep the booths with vinyl decals of whatever logo they submit, and you can make a fortune even after paying workers to produce and apply the decals for $100/hr.

Wegmans is the closest grocery store we have to my new place and I've never had a bad experience there. I feel good about shopping there because the employees always seem like they're having a decent day, even if they're doing one of the shittier jobs there's usually at least 2 of them together talking and helping each other get it done faster. I mean... two points isn't a huge deal. They got removed from the Apple app store last month, which is a killer that would slowly strangle the site if they didn't correct it, and they probably figure their only path back into Apple's good graces is to stop hosting porn.

It sucks for the users but it might be the only reasonable business decision.
