I don't remember how I did the math. But my options for having health coverage and a job are either only work part time for minimum wage, or get a very good paying job with affordable insurance. There's no middle ground.

That's actually been a serious problem in America for decades. It isn't just medical care either. Often stuff like food assistance goes away if you get basically any job. There's a very real possibility that getting a minimum wage job can turn off benefits entirely and make it cost prohibitive to eat and pay rent.

During the first year of school when I wasn't full time for the whole year I made just enough the year before to have to pay $400 for poo poo insurance privately, as I didn't qualify for obamacare. The year after I didn't make enough and couldn't do obamacare because I qualified for medicaid but Illinois took TWO ENTIRE YEARS to get back to me to say "sorry you don't qualify, try for obamacare", so I had to pay $580 for an even shittier plan than the $400 plan, which didn't cover the $2,000 in medical tests I had to take for clinicals. For 3 months this year I was able to get decent coverage under obamacare because of some creative number crunching for income until I got a job with benefits and hopefully never have to deal with that garbage again. American health care insurance sucks, but state run insurance is even worse.

Here, you have to work at least 20 hours a week to get food assistance. But if you make more than $350/week gross, you don't qualify for it. So if you work full time, or even 35 hours/week, you have to make less than $10/hour.

I have no idea what other locations were like, but here they were going for the upscale market that Publix would devour a couple of years later when it entered the market. Publix not only nailed the whole upscale supermarket theme to a tee, but they also made it uniform throughout the entire chain. I have yet to see a Publix that was as run down as some of the Kroger stores I've been to. Kroger seems to be a crapshoot as far as quality goes. Brunos: I remember my family occasionally going a good 20-25 miles out of their way just to shop at the Bruno's in Hoover because of how nice it was. Even the Winn-Dixie Marketplace that opened closer to home wasn't as nice.

I know this is the companies circling the drain thread and not the companies that are punching well above their weight thread, but Freakonomics had a great podcast about how Trader Joe's, despite doing pretty much the opposite of what grocers in the US are supposed to do (no advertising, store brands only, paying high wages) and not only succeeding but being the most profitable US grocer per square foot by a long shot.

Its because TJ's is awesome. Everyone that I've been to is always busy and they have good quality stuff.

I chatted with one of their reps on FB a couple months back when I had to settle a bet with my boss, and clamored for getting one here. Back when my mom was dying of cancer and I had to go back to Liverpool several times to watch her waste away, when I was crying and in need of comfort, I loved having that big rear end Wegmans on Rte 57, less than a mile from her house, ready to feed me at any hour. And make me crack up over the train set they had running over the bulk candy section. Also, my husband worked for Trader Joes for 8 years, and they treat their employees incredibly well. Support them with a clear conscience and confidence if you have one nearby.

Wegmans is the closest grocery store we have to my new place and I've never had a bad experience there. I feel good about shopping there because the employees always seem like they're having a decent day, even if they're doing one of the shittier jobs there's usually at least 2 of them together talking and helping each other get it done faster. Just seems like a really positive atmosphere and not in a superficial fake type way.

Their distro centers aren’t great to work in but they’re at least union I will say someone at Wegmans helped us out 100000% big time by letting my wife’s insurance coverage go on longer than it should have when my wife got hurt and couldn’t work. Covered our daughter’s birth when I was between jobs.
