Figured out how to dock, I consider that an overwhelming success. :D Don't have time to keep playing for now. Stations are huge frame rate killers, but actually being out in space is totally fine.

Well hell yeah, I was thinking the other day that if you could have something like a single ship controlling like Freelancer and fleet management just being Homeworld it'd be perfect and probably a huge nightmare to do.

I can't figure out how to fire my teladi captain, so I am just standing over his shoulder and being a micromanaging rear end in a top hat.

OwlFancier

It's not homeworld, not least because the map is on a much larger scale, but yeah like you can click a ship then right click somewhere on the map and tell it to go there and do something, then even drag the order you just placed around to fine tune it.

It's pretty good.

Try ship information > crew information > full crew list > select the person > comm them > more > fire

Real pain and there's probably a better way to do it but that seems like it might work?

AFAIK though there's no reason to want to get rid of the pilot given that it's required to give the ship remote orders.

Oh I know, I just meant that if fleet management was just handled like an rts instead of trying to hamfist it like in X3 that'd be ideal.

X3 is insanely functional for what it is, I love it.

bought a ship, tossed 3 antimatter in it, went to go back to the waypoint for the mission to send the ship in, 4 pirates are sitting there. kill the ship and then me.

OwlFancier

Yeah the starting ship is really weak compared to the combat ships it seems. I think pulse lasers are basically the impulse ray emitter, which is to say useless at anything but missile interception.

There's an ion blaster that does ten times as much damage but I suspect it might only damage shields.

So how are you guys starting out? Just flying around and doing things? I did a couple tutorials and now just sorta lost as I don't see any missions around and I only have 10k credits, a crappy ship and nothing else

I haven’t been following this game closely but what’s it feel like as a jumping off point into the X series?

For what it’s worth I love space games and have a fairly high tolerance for complexity - except that X3 felt impenetrable and arcane as hell.

I’m hoping maybe the UI and ease of use is improved? I love the idea of the game but don’t want to repeat X3 where I buy and then immediately shelf it because of said impenetrability.

Make sure you use your long range scanner. I found a data vault that netted me 250k, then used that to buy a trading ship.

OwlFancier

I found a plot to follow but yeah, otherwise you're just trying to find money where you can. Missions are a good bet, there's a prospecting mission I took that pays 80k to find high mineral concentrations in one of the sectors. Just gotta fly around mapping out the sector I think.

It's still... kind of impenetrable. There is a shitload of stuff in this game and while the interface is much more usable, it's gonna take even series vets a while to figure out what's going on.

The interface is really good I think for what it does, but there's just so much drat stuff to keep track of.

That's good, because I had the game set to ultra on my 980ti (1440p monitor), and figured the 16 for I was getting was just because I had everything maxed out. Then I dropped it to the low present and it went up to 27...

SSAO was the big killer for me, and it doesn't seem to get turned off with the high/medium/low settings. I also get a big drop staring at the sun, for some reason, at 1440p but not at 1080p.

Thanks, I was using it for a bit but just found ships flying around and some rocks.

If anyone is stuck on the scanning tutorial like I was (I think it's the 3rd tutorial), you need to get close to the orb thing.. like really close and you'll be able to hear stuff. It doesn't mean scan the station. When I had issues it was because it put the floating scan point inside the station so I couldn't get close enough to trigger it.

I just boarded a ship heading for who knows where. I was trying to steal an NPC ship as it landed on the pad next to me. I ran into it but the pilot never left his seat so I didn't really have anything to do in there.
Then the door closed and he undocked, headed to another system with me on board. I can only use my space suit (leave his ship in the middle of nowhere), if I press Shift-D I'm just back into the same NPC ship, not my own ship in the other system.

OwlFancier

Has anyone figured out how to transfer wares between two ships? I have stuff in one ship and want to move it to another one of the same size. Can't find a way to do that.
E: Ended up just ejecting them into space and picking them up.

For everyone worried about framerates prior to purchasing, I'm playing this very smoothly with most settings maxed at 2k resolution with my 1050ti. It's rough around the edges for sure, but it runs well and definitely feels like a proper sequel to the X3 games so far rather than anything like Rebirth.

I've had a big stupid grin on my face since I pushed play. It's dense and obfuscated and impenetrable and so far I love it. If you're someone who could enjoy x3 despite the flaws, I think you'll be just fine.

Hopefully the empire management and fleet control and everything holds up, but so far it's a much smoother and all around better experience than I expected.

I need to do the tutorials but it would be cool if this is a way to get into hostile system where you're kill on sight (don't know if this is a thing in X4)

Obviously we can't answer that because how would you get X3 unless you'd played it for 300 hours?

I will tell you it feels a lot more like playing X3 for the first time than playing Rebirth.
