A true renaissance man

Hey you sickos, welcome to the B-League thread.

Here’s the opening paragraph from the old one (emphasis mine):

Chrom1um posted:

So, the old B-League thread has gone on for over 9 months, and during that time Bellator has slowly ascended to the level of a B+ League, and Strikeforce has been dead since about January. Thus it's time for a new B-League thread. Yuriy was originally going to do this but he's banned at the moment, so apparently that task falls on me. Because apparently the Rapture was due to come before someone else would make a B-League thread. Or at least, the stuff I'd already written up for it would be falling out of date. The stuff not written by me will be properly attributed. This OP is subject to updates and is a work in progress.

That post, at the time of this post’s posting, is over 5 years old. Time for a new thread for discussing non-UFC MMA.

The first question is why should I waste my worthless time watching the B-leagues?

Well, if you’re reading this you’re probably an MMA fan, and the odds are you probably have said something like “I used to follow MMA, but I don’t know who the fighters are anymore.” It’s true – the UFC has purged the fighters of their own identities underneath brand-centric promotion and uniforms and poo poo. There’s a lot of nostalgia for the days when we could watch a fat dude with tribal tattoos and shorts with CONDOM DEPOT on the rear end get his face broken open. That was the dream of the 00s

Well, to paraphrase Portlandia, the dream of the 00s is alive in the B-leagues. This is where MMA still has that ad-hoc back room weirdo charm. Come and join us.

In fact, the day of posting, we had a great fat guy flair flop, which is the official move of the thread:

The Big Three of the B-Leagues
The top of the B-leagues consists of three promotions: Bellator, OneFC, and RIZIN.

Bellator

Bellator MMA is the resurrected corpse of Strikeforce. Noted shitbag and promotional founder Bjorn Rebney was forced out by Viacomm; Scott Coker came in, like two days after his noncompete clause from the Strikeforce sale expired. Since then, he has abandoned the basic tournament model (though it’s creeping back) and made a point of scooping up released UFC fighters who, with the aid of Indian Commission drug testing standards, fight like their 23-year-old selves again. Oh and he’s also dumping shitloads of money on Fedor, because that worked out so well for him last time. Anyway, they’ve branched out into Pay Per View a bit, they’ve done some crossover kickboxing spectacles, and they occasionally put together some good shows. They let fighters do theatrical walkouts, and they’re not afraid to put together a good mismatch.

What Bellator is doing really well right now is developing prospects and talent. They might be surpassing the UFC in that respect, at least insofar as they can generate buzz about people like Michael Page and Aaron Pico at a time when some UFC fighters need to get 9 straight wins to get people talking.

Notable Bellator Fighters At Time of Posting
Bellator is the only promotion worth breaking down by division, because they’re the only B-league which manages to have coherent divisions with fighters anyone knows.

Heavyweight
Ryan Bader (c) Fedor Emelianenko, Chael Sonnen (yes), Frank Mir, Roy Nelson, Rampage Jackson, Cheik Kongo, Matt Mitrione, Vitaly Minakov, Sergei Kharitonov

Right now Bellator is running a Heavyweight Grand Prix, which saw Fedor KO Mir, Chael outwrestle Rampage, and Ryan Bader actually stop some dudes (nobody likes Bader). Bader vs Fedor in the finals.

e. Bader beat Fedor in the final by 35 second KO to become the (-ugh-) champ champ. :classiclol: In the leadup to that fight I thought about getting the mods to change the name of this post to "B-League MMA - Ryan Bader Denigration Station" but I decided against giving Bader even that left-handed dignity.

Light Heavyweight
Ryan Bader (c), Wanderlei Silva, Phil Davis, Linton Vassel, Liam MacGreary, Muhammed Lawal, Tito Ortiz (sometimes).

Middleweight
Gegard Mousassi, Melvin Manhoef, Alexander Schlemenko, Rafael Carvalho, Chidi Njokuani, Rafael Lovato Jr. (c), Hisaki Kato, Lyoto Machida

Welterweight
Rory MacDonald, Andrey Koreshov, Douglas Lima (c), Michael Page, Paul Daley, Neiman Gracie, Lorenz Larkin, Jon Fitch, Erick Silva

They’re running a welterweight tournament, too, involving most of these guys. The champ is just part of the bracket, with the title on the line, which is pretty interesting, in fact. e. Update. Jon Fitch got robbed in his quarterfinal match against Rory, and the tournament has unfolded to put Rory vs Lima in the final. Go look up Douglas Lima vs Michael Page.gif if you haven't seen it. e. Update: Lima won it and Rory quit to go to PFL

Lightweights
Patricio Pitbull (c), Brent Primus, Patricky Pitbull, Michael Chandler, David Rickels, Saad Awad, Kevin “Baby Slice” Ferguson. Jr, Benson Henderson, Josh Thomson.

E. Note that there are two pitbull pats

Featherweight
Patricio Pitbull (c), Pat Curran, Daniel Straus, A.J. McKee, Emmanual Sanchez, Justin Lawrence, Aaron Pico.

Bantamweights
Kyoji "The Gooch" Horiguchi (c), Darrion Caldwell, Eduardo Dantas, Joe Warren. Gooch came over and took the title in a Rizin vs Bellator champ thingy.

Women’s Featherweights.
This division is garbage. Julia Budd is the champ.

Women’s Flyweights
Lima-Lei Macfarlane (c), Heather Hardy, Valerie Letourneau

This is a home-built division and it’s not too bad, actually. Macfarlane might be a decent fighter. The theory was “let’s beat the UFC to starting W125,” and if nothing else, the competition may have contributed to the UFC starting the division and letting it become an immediate garbage fire of bad matchmaking and missed opportunities.

RIZIN FF

If Bellator is a Frankenstein made from the dismembered corpses of UFC fighters and the brain of Scott Coker, RIZIN is the reincarnation of PRIDE, with extra freak shows as some kind of karmic consequence of the sins (or virtues?) of a previous life. Sakakibara is at the helm again, but it’s a new era.

I’m not going to bother with a divisional breakdown, since in my mind the appeal of RIZIN isn’t in the divisions or champions, though I’ll list a bit of that below. If you want sizable divisions with recognizable names, go watch Bellator. If you want multi-day New Years spectacles featuring Bob Sapp, retired Sumo wrestlers, ridiculous mismatches, and exhibition bouts with no clear rules, on top of a small stable of very good fighters, well then RIZIN is your East Asia time zone home. RIZIN has also proven very willing to cross-promote with other B-league entities.

Notable RIZIN Fighters
There are no Rizin champs! Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, Cro Cop, Kyoji Horiguchi, and Kanna Asakura have won grand prix titles, and Kickboxing pretty boy Tenshin Nasukawa won a Kickboxing GP.

Side note – Kyoji Horiguchi is on the short list of the best fighters outside of the UFC right now, in any promotion. He put together a 7-1 UFC run, his only loss being to MMMDMMJ, and he’s 7-0 in Rizin since April 2017. He’s just pretty good. Update. He beat up Bellator's bantamweight champion twice and is now a two-promotion champion a weight class above where he fought in the UFC. The Gooch rules. e. Gooch got beat up by some guy then exploded his knee so he's gone for a while.

Other side note – Tenshin is fighting Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in a “we have no idea what the rules are” exhibition bout on New Year’s Eve 2018. It probably won't feature anything like this:

e. Mayweather embarrased Tenshin in a round.

So, other key RIZIN personalities include Crazy Horse, Kron Gracie, Daron Cruickshank, Baruto, Akebono, and Shinya Aoki.

I can’t conclude without mentioning Gabrielle “Gabby the Grandma Killer” Garcia. She’s a legit light heavyweight female fighter (legit in size, not skill), who crushes grandmas. Her fights are reminiscint of Ortolan, in that you consume, but you feel intense shame for having participated.

ONE FC

So if Bellator has the names, and RIZIN has the spectacle, the Singapore-based ONE FC is perhaps the most legitimate promotion in the B-leagues, at least from a sport and matchmaking perspective. That’s the best way I can think to describe my feelings about ONE, anyway. Chatri Sityodtong is the CEO, with Rich Franklin, Miesha Tate, and Matt Hume on the VP level. ONE has been developing talent in South-East Asia and the Philippines, and they’ve managed to put together a solid stable of fighters, especially in the lower weight classes.

To be honest, I don’t get engaged with ONE very much, partly due to time zones, but they’re really good at producing sick highlights that show up on Twitter (see my “follow these guys” bit above). What puts them into the “B-Leagues” category instead of “C-Leagues and Worse” is that they seem to be on the push for an expansion of some kind. They’ve signed recently departed UFC champion Demetrious Johnson in a “trade” for Ben Askren, and there’s a lot of buzz around them. Sage Northcutt is rumoured to be on his way there, too!

ONE FC is also an industry leader in prohibiting weight cutting, after the death of a fighter – keep that in mind when going “holy crap they have screwy weight divisions.” The procedures they use are intended to allow fighters to compete at their natural weight, theorizing that a fighter who cuts to 155, American Lightweight, will have a walking weight of 170.

OH! I almost forgot! ONE allows soccer kicks in their non-unified rule set, and Andrei Arlovski planted one on Tim Sylvia in a satisfying way, though that was some time ago.

On the other hand, Michael "The Voice" Schivallo is their colour commentator, so consider yourself warned.

ONE FC’s ft Nan Xiong (3 def.)
Atomweight (115) - Angela “Not KGB” Lee – she’s probably the best 105 (115) fighter in the world, and she has had some good fights. (4 def.) (That nickname is my addition to indicate that she’s not the UFC Women’s 115er of the same name, formerly married to a dude with SS tattoos.)

The Fringes of Mediocrity – The B-Minus Leagues

Invicta FC

Invicta is an all-women’s MMA promotion run by Shannon Knapp. Three years ago had I made this thread it would have been enthusiastically in section B above. Invicta is still ok, but it’s not the frenzied torrent of violence that it was in the pre-Rousey era of MMA, when every card was packed with veterans with chips on their shoulders and no drug testers in sight, fighting against seriously mismatched opponents and/or then-unknown elites. (Seriously, the first 10 or so Invicta cards were awesome bloody messes). The UFC has long since poached Invicta’s talent, and now it’s more of a feeder promotion.

I’m not going to bother with a list of champs – right now they have a vacant title, and the other four divisions have one combined title defence. The longest reigning champ got the belt in March 2018. Whatever I post here will be completely irrelevant in like a month so gently caress it. Most of the title fights are now for vacant belts.

The only noteworthy fighter in Invicta right now is Sarah Kaufman, a 20-4 Bantamweight veteran and former Strikeforce champion who is kind of like the WMMA equivalent of Rick Story – never looks great, but is really good at making her opponents look like loving dogshit. This less-than-exciting style combined with her tendency to call out the UFC for bullshit means that she’ll probably be buckling in for a long title reign, unless Cyborg needs a last-minute bantamweight to fight. Sarah has been in some cool fights (esp. her first two against Alexis Davis) and she seems like a sweet lady, too.

I’ll give a shout out to Mizuki, too.

Invicta still puts on a good show, with lots of weird gumbi girl grappling, but I’d no longer shell out to buy a PPV like I once did. It’s more of a “oh hey I’m bored and there’s some poo poo on!” attraction. One fight last year had like... a submission, a technical submission, and a decision, in all of its weirdness.

I should warn you about the unfortunate play-by-play commentary of Julie Kedzie, who seems like a nice lady with a sweet doggie, but who has an unfortunate stream-of-consciousness way of speaking and a certain inferiority complex which leads to a not-great commentary experience.

You can watch Invicta on UFC Fightpass. Hannibal Burress is one of their main sponsors recently, and he just puts a big rear end sticker of his face in the ring.

PFL – Professional Fighters League
(their logo sucks and I can't find a good link so gently caress it.)

Formerly known as Ray Sefo Presents Ray Sefo’s World Series of Fighting with Ali Abdelaziz, the reinvented PFL is something of a newer player. It's not likely that the PFL will move up to threaten Bellator as the #2 organization in the American market. Mediocrity is a more likely outcome, but it's still dudes fighting so why not?

The main thing you need to know about PFL is that it has a “Season” format which leads to balls-deep $1 Million tournament. Fighters get season points for wining fights and being cool to watch, and then the fighters in the division who have the points get seeded into a tournament, and the winner gets a big bag of cash with a dollar sign on it.

I’m not going to get into more details, just look at this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_Fighters_League#PFL_Standings_-_by_weight_class

Noteworthy fighters? Uh gently caress. Jake Shields is out there, but he got beaten up bad recently by Ray Cooper III, whose dad Jake gently beat up like 10 years ago. Olympic Gold medallist judoka Kayla Harrison fights for them too.

The inaugural championships will be determined for 6 weight classes on December 31, 2018. That card will serve as my “notable fighters” list (e. winners in bold):
170 – Ray Cooper III vs Magomed Magomedkerimov by sub
HW – Philipe Lins vs Josh Copeland by tko
205 – Vinny Magalhaes vs Sean O’Connell by stool stoppage
155 – Nathan Schulte vs Rashid Magomedov by UD
145 – Steven Siler vs Lance Palmer by UD
185 – Abuspiyan Magomedov vs Louis Taylor KO

See what’s missing? People you’ve heard about. That’s what PFL offers – an opportunity for young fighters to step into a tournament and get some exposure. PFL is a “Prospects” organization, not a “Names” one. In a different life, they brought us Justin Gaethje and Marlon “The Muppet” Moraes, so the appeal is getting to see these guys grow up and go to the UFC.

PFL is perfectly suitable organized violence, but I’ve just had difficulty figuring out how to watch it.

Rigel posted:

The PFL has just announced their 2019 rosters and schedule. Regular season will be in 6 events on May through August before the cut down to the playoffs, with each fighter getting 2 regular season matches. Playoffs on 3 events in October, Championships on New Years Eve. All 6 regular season cards will be ESPN2 for 2 hours and ESPN+ for 3 hours.

https://www.pflmma.com/schedule

Thanks Rigel! The other thing that's happening this year is that the PFL is hosting a Women's 155 tournament to give Kayla Harrison a platform. The bracket exists somewhere, and it seems not shameful, but the real standout aside from Harrison is Sarah Kaufmann - the Invicta FC 135 champ. This will really be a size vs experience challenge for Kaufmann, who is (on paper) absolutely on a different competitive level than the 6 other women in the tournament (Harrison excluded).

Fightpass – The C-Leagues

This is more of a list than anything. In my mind none of these promotions has much of any unique identity. They have the common denominator of all being available, like Invicta FC, on UFC Fightpass. So once in a while you’ll get a push notification that Chud Fights 31 is on Fightpass, and you can tune in and see Smeed McNally fight Tad Glaap. And sometimes it’s cool.

TKO (Canada. Definitely the best Canadian regional promotion)
Cage Warriors (UK – often has good fights, could be a B- league)
Pancrase (Japan – classic)
Cage Fury (CFFC – Eastern US)
Titan FC (US)
Island Fights (no idea)
AFC. A is for Alaska, folks. This is super low-level poo poo (i.e. often funny).
XFN (US, I think)
EFN? Russia? Maybe?

There are probably more, I don’t know. It’s really difficult to keep track of these because it’s all like “XFN 301” and most people go “holy poo poo they’ve had 300+ events and I’ve never heard of them!?” The bottom line is that in effect this set of promotions is basically interchangeable – dumb poo poo that you can see on Fight Pass, which essentially elevates it one step above the rest of the pack, by mere convenience and exposure.

The Leftovers – the Z-leagues.
I’m going to forget something. The challenge with the rest of these is that as soon as you get a handle on something existing, it seems to stop existing. E.g. Fight Nights Global was a Russian MMA promotion with an awesome commentator, but they haven’t had an event since 2016. Then I google him and I see he’s with EFN too, but that’s a fightpass affiliate; it’s all a mess:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN0ietnlQV4

Promotions pop up, do some events, get some attention and disappear. Some are owned by literal war criminals. At least one became an actual war criminal organization, from what I understand. Here are some that exist in the last two months that come to mind:

ROAD FC
A Chinese promotion featuring this guy:

Road FC is good for dumb bullshit and steroid heavyweights.

Bas Rutten Presents Bareknuckle Boxing from Wyoming
Well honestly Bas isn’t the only one responsible, and the only promoter, but I’ll lump a bunch of poo poo together here. The short version is that libertarian paradise Wyoming has started to allow bare-knuckle boxing cards, and this whole affair has the weird bootleg charm of B-league MMA. Lots of former MMA fighters try their hands at it, including Chris Leben, Phil Baroni (that was a weird card) and “Bogan Queen” Bec Rawlings.

The one full card I watched featured the aforementioned weird Leben-Baroni fight, Bas forcing the crowd to sing Happy Birthday to a fighter, an ostentatiously terrible violinist, a steroided Brazilian getting boxed up by a 36-hour replacement fat Mexican who normally fights three weight classes below, and in the co-main event, former UFC welterweight champion Johny “Bigg Rigg” Hendricks getting savagely knocked out at 185 pounds by Dakota Cochrane, a former lightweight and gay porn performer who failed to get into the house on TUF. Can’t miss that poo poo.

And before page 5 we get this:

Golden Boy Promotions
I can only mention this here. Oscar De La Hoya has dipped his toe into MMA promotion. His first card featured Tito Ortiz fighting a 48 year old arthritic Chuck Liddell. It was even more shameful than it sounds. I feel bad for even having watched it. Bluedeanie apparently gave a donation to an elder abuse charity after having paid for it. Don’t look it up. You’ll regret watching it. The next event is rumoured to put Tito vs Dan Henderson.

Bluedeanie posted:

I jokingly inquired about an elder abuse charity to absolve my guilt but if I'm gonna be namedropped in the OP like that then I better back it up.

I couldn't find a charity dealing specifically with elder abuse that I was familiar with and had good/transparent ratings with any of the organizations that rate charities on things like actually delivering on promises and operating with minimal overhead, so I gave the price of the ppv (ps4 had it on a discount) to Meals on Wheels, which is a really good charity that delivers free meals to people (primarily elderly) who have too limited mobility to get out and take care of themselves. I hade it in honor of Chuck and my grandfather who frequently volunteered to deliver for them when he was still with us.

Happy holidays, b league thread.

Bluedeanie is a cool guy :unsmith:

Battle of Nations - historical martial arts, which just boils down to dudes putting on armor and wanging each other in the head with swords, axes, maces, and shields. Russia tends to dominate

Calcio Storico - the once a year Florentine Football counts here since it is a "sport" that features a lot of combat.

Ganryu-Jima is must-watch fighting. There's also something called M-1 Medieval which is similar to Battle of Nations

You can get the raw MP4 out of the tweet through some manner of magic that i don't know but http://twittervideodownloader.com/ does. As far as I know they're a static link, so it shouldn't break like the Instagram ones do for whatever reason.

Oh hey, when you consume Ortolan, a small songbird that is fed grain in the dark until it cannot fly and is then drowned in brandy, you cover your head with a handkerchief in order to hide your shame from the eyes of God. This is how I consume :swoon:Gabby:swoon: fights, and B-league MMA in general.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

While not quite MMA, I also wanna say the following combat sports are cool and you should try to check out:

Ganryu-Jima, aka Moat Fighting. It's sumo crossed with MMA, plus fog machines, and the number one place to watch a volleyball player fight a baseball player

Calcio Storico always gets its own thread, and deservingly so. It's just the one event everywhere that's just you get excited for the sport itself, and not knowing a loving thing about whats going on.

The only things you need to know are that the reds have the biggest beefiest criminals, and the blues are trash enjoyed only by garbage people. There, you now know all the important bits of calcio storico.

Thinking about subbing back to Fight Pass to watch some of the tiny feds, especially Alaskan Fighting Championship. If you haven't, please do yourself a favor and watch some cards. They're quick, and usually hilarious. The ring announcer's a funny guy.

See, I used to watch shitloads of those tiny cards in the background at work while shuffling papers around - particularly the Russian ones - but then one day I stopped getting the notifications on my phone.

KISS ME KRIS

AFC is easily the greatest MMA comedy promotion ever. Barely trained fighters realizing getting punched in the face sucks in real-time is some powerful poo poo.

Fight Force, the Z-league promotion back home, ran a few PPVs on Ustream back in the day. Best 5 bucks I ever spent on watching men and women fighting for my entertainment.
