fighter pay has always been low in absolute terms but it is much much lower than it used to be in terms of fighter pay as a percentage of revenue. Fighters have always been paid like poo poo, this four billion dollar ESPN behemoth is what's new. Unscrupulous bosses were a plague of the sport back in the day. now the exploitation has been securitized. the fat boss rides around a gigantic compound in Maine on a series of hundred thousand dollar tractors and people go oh yes, Dana white is awesome and deserves every penny.

A good lad who likes his Anna's.
I enjoyed it for the most part but thought it fell apart at the end - my interest has been piqued for other sb nation content though (especially this barry bonds bat thing) so I guess it's a 'win'

Dude, that's a rude thing to say especially since I suspect one of them is posting in the thread right now.

I really enjoyed it other than the throwing the charcoal drawing filter over every image choice. Most of them didn't look like paintings or whatever they were going for - they just looked low quality and dirty.

Edit: Also I get that linking politics and conditions of the time were important for context but the writer leaned extremely heavy into that at points and probably could have dialed that back a bit and spent more of that time for MMA details and fight breakdowns. I was surprised how much of it went into political ranting beyond context setup but I haven't watched a ton of SB Nation stuff nor have I seen anything else from the people who made it so if that's normal then that's normal.

The last two parts in particular I really loved, but then again I could watch stuff from the Chael/Silva 1 fight and Jon Jones fuckups forever and always be able to smile at it

Yeah I feel like showing this series to someone you're trying to help get into MMA for the first time or at least understand the history of the sport leading up to now would be a really good jump off point

Although they may be depressed by the end of it

The series could have been a lot more depressing to be fair. If they had even two more weeks to work on it, they could have done a whole small recap of how hosed the broken bodies that get chewed up and spit out by the company become in the aftermath

By which I of course mean showing the entire video of the recent Chuck/Tito fight

I liked how it made a huge deal and used scary music when talking about ufc taking place in a building that is famous for fights because trump owned it

I was talking more about the super weird ending of "Everything you love turns to poo poo so don't like anything" that they decided to drive home in the final moments more than the sad state of the sport

But yeah, that too

I dunno, Felix still very clearly loves UFC, it's less 'don't like anything because it all gets sold out' and more 'if we keep obsessing over 'legitimacy' as some nebulous goal for everything we do then any hobby or pass time you have is vulnerable to getting hosed up exactly like this'.

They've basically been talking about doing this, if not outright working on this, off and on for like 2 years

Or maybe just show them Pride 33 and be like, one in 100 cards is this good.

I love capitalism!! DM me for the best investing advice!
I really appreciated the overall point where when the UFC had investments in their fighters the sport itself flourished. I'm surprised that it was never brought up that a union really legitimizes a sport also and makes it a better product.

But yeah money first

Also here's a backdrop of things just getting shittier and more alienating at the same time as this weirdo outsider thing gets monetized into poo poo. Rip"

The favourite twist is the wingnuts claiming the UFC is a clear display of the failures of socialism, because they see uniformity (via uniforms) = communism, whereas the bootstraps of Conor shows the powerful force of individual capitalist enterprise not hindered by government intrusion. They have clearly never heard of when corporations would pay employees in currency that was only redeemable with other parts of said corporation.

HAHA! WOOOOOOO WOOO!

i really really liked the doc. the last part in particular hit on a bunch of the reasons why I don't find the UFC as interesting as I did 10 years or so ago when i originally got into it. it was very bizarre and weird and had a particular brand and point of view, even if that was metal mulisha, josh koscheck threatening to motorboat GSP's rear end, condom depot shorts, face the pain, etc.

now it's just way more bland even if it's more 'polished', and the fighters personalities are way less interesting even if the skill level has gone up, and the experience of being a fan was better when there were fewer cards and you got to know more fighters and see more important fights on fewer cards.

i think part of sage's appeal here besides his Lean Body is that he's a throwback to the years ago when fighters were more easily seen weirdos, were on more blatant roids, and his career has been fairly easy to follow even as a guy on the bottom rung.

i understand why they're doing it, and it's probably good business to do it with the value of live sports as an investment for the PE fucks and for streaming rights. but i don't personally like it as much anymore, and it could be a bad strategy in the longterm. nascar was like 5-10 years ahead of the UFC in getting more corporatized and bland and changing sponsors and removing the danger and weirdness and the bizarre drivers. they've lost like half their attendance and most of their ratings in the last 10 years, but they've got a huge TV deal still.

A question/challenge for the thread. Is there a single Anti-Bolsanaro UFC fighter from Brazil? I did some half-arsed research from Instagram and the only contender I could identify was Junior Albini but not knowing Portuguese I can’t confirm: https://www.instagram.com/p/BorgM3sAfM2/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=qo0lbc13xavk

yeah, it really isnt. i havent grown up through decades of severe political corruption in a barrios run by a violent cartel without working electricity or a police force .. so yeah i probably wouldnt vote for the extremist. but if i did then maybe i might have .. you just dont know.

The uniformity of option is more what interests me, it’s pretty fascinating. Can’t think of anything else like it in a sporting context

Watching the Fighting in the Age of Loneliness brought it back to mind
