Shame Boy posted:is "an SUV is smaller than a van" a particularly controversial statement yes, suvs are usually quite a bit larger on the outside than various consumer vans. but they hold less inside. especially modern suvs up against common consumer vans from before everything was some lovely cramped suv eg the current explorer is 20 inches longer, 7 inches wider, and just an inch or two shorter than the 90s aerostar van was - its even 8 inches longer than the extended length aerostar. but the aerostar got a good 130 cubic feet of cargo space in the standard modek when you got the back 5 seats out versus about 80 cubic feet in the current explorer with the rear 5 seats down/removed (the extended aerostars did another 35 or so cubic feet with the additional space added behind where the back row went) and remember, the current explorer is only "midsize" for an suv in modern terms

isn't the x5's interior significantly taller? i saw what must've been an x1 and it looked decent enough, just like a 5 door 3 series lifted a bit.

the roads in frozen socialist hellhole norway do get pretty hosed up after the winter, at least on minor routes, but they also do a really good and fast job of patching or resurfacing important roads. so main arteries are usually in good condition, but if you're not going from one major city to another then be prepared for some nasty bumps and potholes i think the most popular car i notice here is the subaru forester, followed closely by whatever the toyota is that looks like a forester, and then loads of audi a4s for some reason the roads here aren't anything like as bad as in belgium though

I got a crosstrek and the added height compared with the impreza is real nice in snow tyvm our roads get hosed up all the time, at least the city roads. Part of it is the freeze/thaw cycle, but most of it is that your every city goes for loving cheap asphalt if they can get away with it. There's a 200km stretch of mountain road that has some of the worst winter conditions I have seen in the province, and it's been near pristine for over 10 years of heavy (18-wheelers) traffic and continuous (~6 months a year) snow plowing under heavy abrasives. Meanwhile the closest highway has been re-paved at least 4 times in the last 6 years because they keep putting the cheap stuff on there and doing it in a rush. You can see the same thing with the lines they paint on the grown. High quality paint can survive 1-2 winters unscathed whereas cheap stuff they put on city streets is gone after 2 winter months. Cities here have adapted by putting a paint dot of high quality every 2-5 meters, and just re-drawing the lines every year so it's cheaper but you keep visual guidelines anyway.
