Reddit has the excuse that it started off as a newsfeed site, and all the terrible comment formatting was tacked on later(and by then the dumb voting system was too baked-in to remove).

That kind of happened to tumblr too. Individual tumblr blog layouts can be okay, but the dashboard is terrible. And poo poo breaks down fast when people try holding conversations there, despite half-hearted attempts to make things more readable.

Basically everyone should build their sites assuming that users will force it to become a platform they can talk on, because they will.

Blackjack Pizza, Colorado/Wyoming/Montana?/Tucson??/Florida???? chain has finally had a few locations close. How has it been surviving this long? When ordering from Dominos or Pizza Hut was $30 bucks for a large minimum, and mom and pops (at least locally) weren't taking credit cards for delivery, ~$22 Blackjack Pizza was something I'd get even though they were really bad. But now that the chains are under 15 bucks and they haven't lowered their prices or made their pizza better, and every small place takes cards, I just don't know how they've kept it up this long.

I guess the margins on pizza are THAT good.

A large cheese pizza from Pizza hut cost $1.50 in 1958, which is $11.50 in today's dollars. That's about on par with the current price of anywhere between $8-12 depending on area and deals.

this forum post states:

Our original menu is from 1968... large 16" cheese and pep was 3.24 . We bought the pizzeria in 1983..our 10 year anniversary in 1993 we rolled back the prices to 1983 large 16" cheese and pep was 7.99. I believe we were selling them in 1981 for 7.29 when I was managing the place. Hope this helps.
Mike

An XL (16" pizza) at $3.24 in 1968 is the same as $23.21 today, and $7.99 from 1981 for the same XL cheese is the same as $21.87. Which is just about the same as straight menu price for the same things today. Of course there are always "coupons" and such, but it was the same back then, too. Discount prices merely had less visibility due to how easy they are to use and apply with online ordering in modern times.

Back around 2007 LiveJournal decided that it would be a great idea to suspend around five hundred blogs and communities for objectional content. This included people interested in BDSM, fandom blogs, and book discussion blogs. There was a massive outcry, some blogs were restored, and a bunch of folks took their poo poo and left. Then in 2011 the entire site got slammed by DDoS attacks that definitely had nothing at all to do with Russian politics, and certainly not the election, and everyone hosed off to Tumblr.

So I guess what I'm saying is that the next step is for Russia to buy Tumblr and close the circle.

I'm including tax, toppings ($2 each for a while), delivery fee and tip. It might be closer to ~28 than 30.

That is true, I guess I'm not factoring in that it's the discounts that are bringing the prices generally down in current times, whereas if you called up Pizza Hut in the early aughties and asked for a pizza they wouldn't give you any specials that you didn't know to ask for, and the advertised specials weren't always something that one would want, or would be more focused on feeding a larger group of people.

fizzymercury

I can definitely see approaching $30 on a delivery back before online ordering. Back in 2000ish when I worked at Dominos if you didn't have a coupon and you wanted like a large specialty pizza and didn't have a coupon you were looking at paying $18 and change just for the pie. We made bank on people who didn't know what pizza was worth or how to ask for specials. It was basically an idiot tax. You're already stupid for buying a terrible pizza, why not overpay for poo poo?

My god that job was dire.

Closer to standing on your porch and speaking at normal volume so nobody hears anybody. Tumblr makes it impressively difficult to find replies to a post.

A lot of tumblr migrants have hopes for Pillowfort.io, which seems by and far a tumblr clone.
The issue is that it was kickstarted this summer, and currently in a closed beta that requires 5usd to join.
Also, I have little faith they'll be able to scale up to meet with demands, their site went down almost immediately after finishing maintenance yesterday.

But otherwise, twitter seems to be a stopgap, as people figure out what to do.

and LGBTQ content. don't forget it's illegal to be gay in Russia and being gay is inherently nsfw so don't let any gay people talk about being gay on their social media!!! tumblr is just as bad about flagging all gay content as inappropriate now, even if it's literally sfw, but the homophobic moderation was a big issue with the end of lj's heyday and painting it as just "bdsm and fandom" glosses over that in a lovely way

There has been a decent migration of Tumblr people to the fediverse (Mastodon/Pleroma/GNU Social/Etc). It's obviously not a perfect replacement but there is some cultural compatibility for those who have found their way to non-"free speech zone"/non-techbro instances.

To be fair, Itch.io is a pretty big site/marketplace that sells adult content as well.
( There are also some porn galleries that use the .io domain, and have for years. )
It's loving amazing that they didn't look up the terms of the domain name they bought though, I will grant you that.

But yeah, I'm still waiting for them to actually let the tumblrs onto their site before I give final judgement on their incompetence.

( Previously they were only sending out keys every friday. And today they sent out the keys for people who had donated between Nov 16-23.
So I'm still waiting for them to hit the point where they start sending out invites for the people who started fleeing on monday. )

Honestly, I don't think they or any one other site are going to end up being a proper haven for the tumblr refugees.
You'll just get a lot of sites with large user influxes. ( Like for example Newgrounds. )
And then in a couple months/the following years we'll probably see more startup sites trying to be the next, true, tumblr replacement.

(Pillowfort I suspect will simply break under the strain, anyhow. Unless they've already started investing the money the tumblr-surge is bringing, they don't stand a chance at scaling up before people start losing interest. )

Everyone is wondering where Tumblr users will migrate to en masse and re-establish their community and I'm sitting here going "lol, that's not how this poo poo works, people." I've lived through it time and again, watching a website and it's community die. When communities like this die, they're gone. A few will wash up on the shores of other sites, a handful will stay in contact with each other, but Tumblr was a time as well as a place, and that time is over, it's zeitgeist now dissipating. In time someone will found another site that becomes a thriving community, and a lot (but not all) Tumblr users will reappear there, and the cycle will continue. But it's over, best just to remember what it was and dream of better days.

I suspect the adult content on itch.io is allowed because it's not displayed on the website itself, and others are flying under the radar (for now).

And seriously, they absolutely were caught completely unaware by this; their twitter handle literally contains the TLD.
