Depends on your tolerance level for poorly described mechanics and jank.

For anyone whose played an X game before and enjoyed them this game is pretty great right now. In a few months time (along with promised DLC) this could be the X game everyone was hoping for.

Once they get wars working the game will mostly be there since that will help the economy move along as well as add some challenge since this should mean the k'haak actually build ships.

Also NPC owned constructor ship pathfinding needs unfucking because they always take the most roundabout route possible for me. It got to the point where I just bought my own.

So does anyone know how to give orders with vertical orientations? Because outside of right click interactions with objects, I can't work out how.

This had resulted in my last selection of 'go deploy some satellites' orders making a bunch of essentially useless results, due to stations with notably vertical positions. Not even far fringe space drugs stations, just plain old food and medical supply stations close by to gates and highways.

While I'm at it, is there any way to order ships to use the long range scan ping? Because the explore commands even with 4 skill pilots ranges from super useless to suspect. "Okay, I've pre-scanned so we can SEE the physical model of that group of stations, and know there are more in the other direction. Go on, go get it! Go ID those stations." *Carves a path that leaves all the ? marks exactly at the cusp of 'we COULD have ID them if we had only flown 2 KM farther before turning around and leaving*

But the revelation that I can't even rely on NPCs to deploy a satellite network around known space is a much bigger ballbuster :sigh: Some are even beyond 75 km vertically, so if I were super loving rich and putting 5 million credits worth of advanced satellites in a ship, that would still leave gaps.

Based on how fast they're addressing the major complaints about the game I think it's realistic to see all the main systems (auto-pilot, trading, wars, turrets, station building) polished up by the end of the year. The game is already very fun to play. I can't wait to see what an expansion and some mods can turn it into though, so it all depends on what you want your first playthrough to be like.

OwlFancier posted:

Rotating the map thus far, just makes it click a flat plane location a mile away. I've tried shift, alt, and ctrl clicks and drags on existing orders. If a ship is already at a vertical orientation due to "fly to: station that's down there" then further orders will be to place the satellite back up at the zero point :saddowns:

So far I am also not allowed to drag satellite orders anyways on that note which has made missclicks with satellite orders even for stations at the middle of space also a pain in the rear end. Nor a way to order NPCs to collect sattelites for those times they catch all but one station in their range so you don't just say gently caress it and barf out multiple satellites within 3 km of eachother.

Maybe they figured it was "good enough" that you can do right click orders for direct interactions with stations? Or there really is some obvious if you already knew it method. I hope it's that one. Even if it's still means stopping to rotate the map every single time to eyeball vertical distances.

EDIT: Part of why these sort of things are more frustrating than loving up and dying, is because they are things that FEEL like they should be simple. Complete with perfectly good UI elements going to waste. Like working out "Oh, I need like 10 individual inputs, multiple times, to swap pilots between ships"

E: Egosoft is also, clearly, using a different yardstick than the rest of us for what is simple and not worth mentioning and what is hard and therefore worthy of note. Examples: functioning war and empire building system, being able to just give money to subordinates and they figure out buying resources for themselves etc all being just part of the background sim.

Actual idiot baby question. I seem to be having trouble buying trade cargo in the amounts I want?

I've got two missions. One for 1,800/1,800 food ration/medical supplies. One for 2,250 / 1,350 food/meds. For ARG and HAT.

Drove over to a trader station selling lots of both. To start with, I selected 1,800 of each (noticed it seemed to consider that more, but still well below my 9k range cargo hold. Seems food is 1=1, and meds is 1=2 for space. For future reference, Maja dust is 1=6). Trade processing, aaand done. cool.

"Let's see if I've got enough room more... Wait, why don't I have any food rations? Why do I only get a soft bloop sound trying to buy food ratios and medical supplies, or even JUST medical supplies?"

It can't be that they are out. My info says they have over 100k food rations, and over 50k med supplies. with 3 yellow dots on the map for the at a glance sell volumes.

If I could only hold one kind of cargo at a time (That would suck), then shouldn't I be able to buy more medical supplies? It can't be a case of volume, I always end up under my 9k capacity range in the buy estimates.

I tried loading a save before I had bought anything. But trying to straight up buy 4,050 food just gets a soft bloop and nothing bought. 3,150 meds alone, Bloop. Nothing bought.... 200 food? Bloop, nothing bought.

What am I loving up here? :eng99: Also, NPC crew have returned to stomping my nuts :negative:

EDIT: Current theory: Taking a look at my missions, and seeing that one of the 'we're so low on food and meds!' missions is for the very sector Im trying to buy them from stocked with more food and meds they will ever need. Maybe this is loving with their logic?

I'm trying to fly to another unrelated trader station I know of owned by ANT. But yeesh. What the gently caress.

I expect that the crippling bugs will be fixed early Q1 2019.

But there are still quite a few balance issues...like the fact that carriers are totally useless due to it being much faster to just fly the ships than to dock them to a carrier. Or the fact that guns not drawing energy from the hull makes the faster ship with the same number of guns inherently best in its class.

Given carries jump drives and ship hulls special bonuses will probably fix all these but it's not exactly just a bug fix.

Ship, weapon and equipment variety is also very much lacking but that may end up having to wait for a DLC as there are enough issues with the current offerings for them to iron out first.

Within the systems of the X universe fighters/carriers still don't make much sense for the same reasons given in that article.

The carriers just need to be able to rearm and repair the fighters from the cargo bay or something. Like consume hull parts to fix up fighters. The fighters in X are all quite capable of operating independently.

They'd make sense if carriers had jump drives, so they could actually take fighters long distances with them, but I think they've deliberately chosen not to have jump drives in X4 so it's unlikely they'll add them just for that.

Okay so flying several sectors over let me actually buy all the food and meds I wanted. (I got 4,050 food, and 1,800 meds. I'll go back to ANT land for more meds later).

This also came with the realization that the station which refused to sell me anything, was a HAT station. While the mission to restock that sector was for ARG. (As such, lots of little ARG stations that would only buy tiny amounts of goods.).

Now I'm even more confused why a station with 100k food and 50k meds for sale, refused to let me buy anything earlier.

It has also revealed some failings of the trade filters. Because it would keep pointing at the HAT station (the mother fucker which wouldn't let me BUY anything) as a source of sales. As trying to filter for ARG is overridden by the filter for trade wares.

So the awkward 'zoom. Enhance. Zoom. Enhance' method of locating stations with certain goods for sale/purchase was even more awkward than usual.

"nice! 2 dot sales *Zoom* where is it? *pan* where is it? *pan* okay there are a couple 1 dot ARG staions. Where is the one buying both? *pan pan pan* oh it's the HAT station. There is only a single ARG station right now that will buy *travels* 14. Fourteen medical supplies"

The NPC economy is certainly live in my game too. NPC ships were beating me to stations that had sales dots on them while I'm busy wrangling things, thus removing said dots. So I've sold a fraction of my goods towards the mission and already nobody wants to buy more. Some shortage.

So even when I become a sprawling mega empire. Faction specific "Please sell us X amount of product in Y sector!" seem like they will be a complete ball buster not worth the time, unless you pre-vet an entire sector to know a SPECIFIC faction has enough stations with a demand in the area.

EDIT: Ah, okay. There is filter fuckery. But of another sort. ARG stations are not shown by seaches for HAT. But HAT stations are shown by searches for ARG... Because HAT are still using the "Argon X Station" in the naming convention.

This also applies for TEL vs MIN, PAR vs HOP, and- :suicide:

Meanwhile, the other mission for HAT was a cruel prank. "Solve our shortage of food and meds in Silent witness XI! We have three stations right next to eachother. A free port, a medical supply factory, and an agriculture factory. So uh... gently caress you?"

One thing I did in X3 consistently was take station build missions to "increase" the economy. Every time I played, I'd do 2 or 3, and then go on to my normal empire building. I can't say if it had an effect or not considering how huge the universe was there compared to X4.

Anyway, just got enough money to buy a builder. I'm going to try the same thing. Let's see how it goes.

Unlike in X3, every station you build you retain ownership of the station once built. So it's an upfront money loser if you build a proper station, otherwise you can make good money off them by hitting bare minimum, then demolishing it (you can remove all but the dock, and then shoot the dock)
