Right outside of Garmisch is a hotel I want to stay at but I also want to go to the village. It's 8 miles away but takes 25 minutes to drive and you cross the border.

Personally, I wouldn't do it for just staying in a specific hotel. There are hotels in Garmisch that are also good, I'm sure. It would be way more of a pain in the rear end than staying less than a 30 minute drive from the ski hill for sure, and I don't know what the parking situation is like in Garmisch.

I’m in Colorado and just getting into skiing, and looking for some jacket advice. I took a lesson out at Beaver Creek and also did one day on my own, but rented clothes for that. I have one of these on order: https://www.thenorthface.com/shop/mens-apex-flex-gtx-2l-snow-jacket-nf0a3igc I liked the soft shell feel of it, but it is insulated and a lot of advice I hear is try to stay away from insulation. Anyone have experience with one like this and not get too hot? Should I really think about returning for a shell?

Its better for warm days and also lets you wash it more easily. On the other hand, its not horrible or crazy to get one with insulation, it'll just be less flexible in terms of options

100g is not much insulation. You will just not need an additional base layer. You might be hot in March. It will be a good jacket from November to March 1st. Open the pit zips if hot. Overall fine jacket. E: I only get jackets without insulation though personally. Also in Colorado.

Same. I’m firmly in the camp of having just a shell that you can add layers to for warmth as needed. OP - I’ve found a lot of last years jackets and ski clothes with tags for super cheap on eBay. I got my North Face jacket shell and removable fleece for $100, retail was close to $300.

Yeah I also really prefer shell jackets. I have a few different mid layers and I honestly have never been more comfortable. CO skier as well. These cold, stormy days have been made manageable by a good down midlayer. The other advantage of a shell jacket is that you're getting better waterproofing and breathability. I definitely feel like a cheaper 2L shell is so superior with regard to wind proofing that you have superior heat retention, while the breathability makes sure you're never soggy. Do it right the first time. A good shell is an investment that will last for years.

I need some help. My family and I are taking a trip to Colorado for a few days after Christmas, and I’m hoping to do some skiing during two of those days. However none of my old ski clothes fit anymore, so I pretty much need to buy a whole new set of ski wear. Here’s the problem, though. We only have about $300 to spend on this, total. Based on the prices of stuff I’ve seen online, I’m not sure it’s even possible to put together a serviceable ski outfit for that little money. This is also coming out of my Christmas present fund, so the less we spend on it the better. Please help me put together a cheap ski ensemble (or tell me if it’s impossible).

They are located in Golden, CO just off I-70 going into the mountains. You can pick up your gear on the way out there and drop it off in their drop box on the way back. Prices are pretty reasonable. Cross country skiers are ridiculous and insane.

It can be leisurely hiking, family snow play, winter Zen, long distance or mountain touring, winter dog walking, low impact cardio workout etc etc. I need a bit of cardio in my life to offset various preferences such as butter and computers, cross country skiing is such good training and so much fun, it motivates me to work out in the summer as well so I can get better at it. Trying to nail technique and gaining gradual improvements is also a big motivator, as it is in alpine skiing and many other sports as well. Also, slow downhills feel fast, fast downhills feel ridiculously fast.

I’ve got the chance to hit crystal tomorrow, I’m super excited, but a little worried that it’s gonna be coreshot city with so much fresh and absolutely no base. My guess is that this snow is gonna fall heavy, which helps, but I’m not sure how cautious I should be... Also, hahahahaha my legs are a joke right now and I’m in no way ready for a pow day

Rained all day at Mt. Hood, but still had some fun. Got totally soaked by the end of it. On the drive home there was a small rockslide and I hit a rock the size of a large pumpkin or regular sized watermelon. Pretty much destroyed one tire rim, but luckily there was a pull off about a quarter mile after. Luckily the rain washed away the ice and I made it back to town on 3 studded tires and one non studded spare. Tire place won't have a wheel for me for two days, but I work then and don't care. Should be mountain ready by my next day off, Sunday.

Finally got up to Winter Park. First turns in something like 18 months, since I had hot-brain all last season. I didn’t realize they don’t even have the boxes strung up on the gondola named…*checks notes*…The Gondola. The best part: my son appears to have picked up where he left off. We hit some blue-blacks and he’s champing at the bit to get to the bigger bumps. I’m trying to pump the brakes since I want to make sure he gets technique time, but there is nothing to get you stoked like watching your kid link bump turns. Oh, also I can’t stop checking out how people are carrying their skis now.
