Stamos as a lead actor fails consistently. He’s alright in an ensemble (i.e. Full House, E.R.).

Similar to Rob Lowe. On paper both of them should be ratings gold, but maybe they’re TOO good looking to be the primary focus.

That was also the time I quit watching Voyager. Holy crap did that show go off the rails.

Well, it was like 1/1.5 seasons, I think. Threshold was mid season 2 and Species 8472 was the season 3 finale/season 4 premiere.

It's interesting that Janeway gives the Borg a freakin' biological weapon (good to know that weapons we consider too heinous to use now are a-ok in The Federation,) and allows them to continue to wreak terror in the Delta Quadrant (and beyond) and she only gets called out for it once by Ray Wise.

Not to mention Future Janeway allows The Borg to assimilate and adapt to weapons, shields, and armor from 30 years in the future... Yeah, her little assimilation virus took down a lot of them, but not all, so... Yeah, maybe that's the reason there's been no official canon post-Nemesis...the Super Borg came back to Earth and wrecked everyone's poo poo.

Both. They were simultaneously freedom fighters and horrifying terrorists. The show did a lot of grey area morality. On one hand they were fighting cardassian occupation but on the other hand their tactics were brutal and a lot of them refused to stop after Starfleet took over the station and the cardassians left.

yeah the creators of the show talk about this in a regretful fashion

it's easy to forget, since it takes so long to make venture bros, that they just aired season 7 and season 1 is firmly grounded in early aughts adult swim sensibilities. so the show is still trying to shake off some of the poor treatment of LGBT characters and discussions that have definitely evolved over 15 years

Oh really? That’s good to hear. I remember from watching them as they aired that they really walked back from the Dr. Girlfriend possibly being trans innuendos as time went on, so I’m glad they realized that was kinda lovely too.

i haven't watched venture bros in a good long time, but honestly can't really talk to most folks about it bc a lot of people default to 'isn't that the show with the sexy woman who was a man? oh lol her deep voice is SO FUNNY!!! she sounds just like a MAN' so even with any walking back what they did, the damage is done and people know Dr. Girlfriend mostly for her less-than-dulcet tones.

IIRC there's also some weird joke about her having literal monkey parts put into her to become a woman? Like gorilla ovaries or something.

yyyeah, i've heard/seen that, and i know that's what they've gone with in the show, but given how heavy-handed the joke is in the earlier two seasons, my honest opinion is they retconned it after realizing how incredibly lovely it was

turns out 'lol she's a MAN, bay-beee' isn't as funny in retrospect, and unfortunately you can't really 'undo' the earlier joke. it just sort of exists as an example of a worse time, just a scant 15-20 years ago.

Venture bros also had that weird B plot in Fallen Arches where Monarch made a prostitute run through a gauntlet of deadly traps for like no reason.

I feel like that’s a thing that’s going to age poorly: having a hooker be the butt of a joke because they don’t really count as people lol. It’s creepily Puritan and overall just hacky as hell. A “dead hooker in the trunk” punchline has become a super trite way to signal how ~dark and edgy~ your comedy is.

venture bros is one of the most heavily retconned shows i can think of. they dropped a huge, massive retcon at the beginning of this season that reaches back to the second episode ever so yeah, they're not afraid to rewrite the entire show

at first sheila (dr. girlfriend) was intended to be the competent second in command of whatever the villain-of-the-week was. like some new idiot with a dumb concept and dr. girlfriend would be the one helping him out. like she was just casually dating all these different costumed antagonists. the monarch was intended to be a one off character, but in their scramble to get the first season of the show produced they just never came up with other villains-of-the-week and so he became the primary antagonist and a full character himself

other characters joke about sheila's voice but it's never truly fully explained in universe except her saying she was (is?) a heavy smoker. most likely they never intended for her to be a directly trans character, but rather since it's the same two guys who do all the voices for all the characters it was easier to do a deep guttural bass voice than a convincing female falsetto, and also that is funny. which spurred some in universe speculation from other characters about how she's really a man but no, she's just a woman with an implausible voice and by now they've fully leaned in to sheila as being a competent female character in her own right

much of the bad behavior of the show can be explained by two guys with sometimes immature attitudes under intense production pressure to make this boutique show. honestly the show probably would have been canceled years ago if mike lazzo, the head of adult swim, wasn't such a huge fan of the show who provided the creators ample space to do whatever. so the show picked up some of that adult swim insensitivity at first but as society has evolved the creators evolved with it and now they try to avoid that stuff - the most egregious example possibly being sgt. hatred's pedophilia which has been retconned/cured away, and which they also say they regret using as a basis for multiple jokes

it's ostensibly an art book comprised of high quality versions of a bunch of concept art, backgrounds, detail shots, etc from the first 6(?) seasons. in reality, it has a bunch of that stuff but ends up being primarily an in-depth, episode-by-episode interview with Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick about the creation of the show, the process, early adult swim stuff, calling out their references and inspirations, stories of things they did stupidly early on and figured out better methods for as they went along, and for some of the early episodes (especially the one where baron underbeit tries to marry dean) it has them lamenting choices they made in terms of either making regrettable jokes or (in the case of the baboon uterus thing, i think) not being strong enough writers that they could mock those sorts of regrettable jokes without just perpetrating them further. it's a pretty fascinating look into the creative process and evolution of the show, and also it weighs a loving ton so it's good for pressing leaves if you want to pick up some wax paper at the same time

mike lazzo, the head of adult swim, likes the show a lot and the show continues to get decent enough ratings and press. it's a cult show so as long as lazzo is around it will keep stumbling along even if it does take like three years to make each season. he's pretty quick to cut other shows, like ATHF

in s4e11, the one where zeus kidnaps everyone, lazzo and another adult swim exec keith crawford have cameos as dudes on a golf course who get shot by general treister cardholder and doe after witnessing a secret OSI contraption

this is lazzo

so there's going to be some kind of a special relationship there between network head and show creator if you're willing to gun down your boss in universe

ngl, for a while I thought Venture Bros. was legitimately an 80s cartoon that had had a recent revival (like the Jetsons did in the 80s), hence the new episodes popping up for a show I'd have sworn I'd been hearing about forever.

there's plenty of traditionally animated tv shows - adventure time, gravity falls, stephen universe, rick and morty are all hand drawn iirc. i'm not sure how much more expensive it is but it can work as a stylistic decision. although these shows are often blended with cgi for certain effects, like vehicles and other complex objects

That actually is kinda what they go for with the presentation and style, with the idea like it's being run off tapes that have been sitting in someone's trunk for a decade or something along those lines. And that it's a Johnny Quest/Scooby Doo era riff in the first place. They even have Johnny Quest characters show up. (Later using slightly different names to cover their butts legally but you can easily tell who they're supposed to be)
