Man that update video is great. You can tell these guys really care about their game. Looking forward to all the fixes and updates, but honestly the one that tickles me the most is Betty talking more. I didnt realize how much I enjoyed that from X3 until it was missing from X4. Hearing my little ship AI rambling in wildly fluctuating pitch as I target things was awesome, "TEL-AH-DEE", "Vanguard, HARRIER, Hauler..". Glad to hear they are aware of most of the complaints, and not just the ones in X4, but the issues from previous titles as well that they are trying to iron out. Cant wait for 2.0

Also the best part of that update video is that it proves they do indeed have no marketing because the first thing a marketing person would’ve told him to do is write down the thing he’s going to say, put it on a screen and restart it if you ever say um.

I've been replaying X3 with the sound off just because I hate that so drat much. Although I think I'm just going to fall into the waiting for the first major update to X4. As much as I like the idea of X3 the early game and flying around solo (or in a small wing) is just so boring and trying to build, maintain, and control an empire is hours upon hours of work getting your ships bought, fitted, and setup for resupply. Then more hours upon hours of finding the right fight. After all that work, you get your five minutes of amazing space combat. Then hours and hours of resupplying and repairing. I even put in the cheat script and even trying to spawn/configure your own fleets is still a good hour or so of tedious menu after tedious menu.

Hopefully X4 can make the magic happen easier and faster with time.

I always start going nuts when I have to outfit more than one thing because for some reason in X3 everything is constantly nearly sold out so I have to jump all over the place to scrounge together all the shields and weapons I need. Satellites too seem to always bee super short in stock for how many I need.

Yeah, I always boggle at the people who describe putting up a hundred+ stations in a sector so they've got weapon, sat, shield, and ammo productions rolling along with hundreds of automated traders. The most I could ever reach is either getting the PHQ or a few TL warehouses with a small collection of commercial script traders to buy out the existing NPC factories before NPC traders got them. That'd be enough to stock up an M1 with an M2 escort, dozen or two of fighters, and a single M7 to play with.

I was trying the XRM mod this time and it was even more crazy. Sure you could get the possibility of a cap ship fight literally every other sector but it just made the rebuilding problems a hundred times worse.

I didn't have enough budget to buy Foundations, and I've been around long enough to wait until Egosoft have released a couple of major updates before getting too invested - And it turned out I had 8 hours clocked since Rebirth was released so I've put 50 plus hours into X-Rebirth since Foundations came out.

Which is why I am very hopeful for X4, because replacing all the various weapons and shields and missiles with just "parts" means you could kit out massive fleets much more easily.

With 1.32, Faulty Logic built back up in a matter of minutes for me. I went in to do more crystal mining, and within 10 minutes there were fighters that didn't exist on me. Was still pretty easy to just gently caress off to another area of the system and just move belts as needed. But there were 4 destroyers on the exit gate when leaving.

Crystals are stupid. This is 30 minutes in FL and having to gently caress off to a different zone every 10 minutes.

In that video about upcoming changes I like how they have to explain that if you go towards the borders of a sector, it actually expands the sector outward. I found that out on my own but what I didn't know is that there's actually stuff out beyond those borders! That's loving nuts! Too bad it just means that when I'm playing a satellite via the map, it's literally impossible to know what the range of it will be ahead of time because every single sector is scaled differently from each other.

I think it's sort of hinted at by the long-range scanner being in the game? That's how I figured out that there's more outside of the map, at least. But it's like that thing with Egosoft including a whole economy and war system in the game, and because unit testing and integration testing couldn't catch the bugs as it needed several hundreds of hours of playing, it's not something that got caught by the developers before release for them to fix or make more obvious.
Makes me wish I could drive south to Germany, sit them all down, buy them a beer and talk about things with them - because everything about how they do updates to the game itself (it seems as if they've clearly got the basics down for everything in the game, it's just getting caught up in a bunch of relatively minor details) to how they communicate with their community (they actually use their own forums, the developers have watched and interacted with Twitch streams, and the update video is clearly just one of the devs) really makes me feel like they really love doing this sort of stuff, and I want them to continue doing it because how else am I gonna get my X fix?

Travel engines are much faster, both when you're in travel mode and just flying around - but as you say, the downside is that you have to spool them up. However, as someone in this thread pointed out earlier, you can just give yourself a tiny bit of boost then pop into travel mode and you'll be at high speed very very quickly.

FrickenMoron
May 6, 2009

Good game!
I prefer the instant travel mode from regular/combat engine i think. ALso this engine mod speed bost is lying around the travel speed, it doesnt improve it that much and neither does the mass mod. Your travel mode speed stays the same. Still at 4k/s the Nemesis Vanguard is fast enough and the combat engines give me a 720m/s regular speed.

Also I just caught a HOP Construction vessel (what happened to the unique models? They all look the same now for every race) going into Faulty Logic 7. Got completely destroyed by mines the second they came out of the gates. Just made me curious what they wanted to build there. Couldnt find a blue plot in the sector.

Using boosters never worked with travel engines for me. It just wasnt worth it. I'm perfectly happy with my combat engine right now, going 791m/s normally and 4k in boost/travel mode.

This is one way to find scum...
For anyone getting stuck in geometry, or perhaps wishing to, there is an absolute method to enter/escape it. Simply give yourself some space to the wall you wish to jump past, engage SETA and wait for it to spool up, and then hit your boost. Whether in spacesuit or spaceship you'll find yourself having easily clipped past as your speed vastly outstrips the collision detection update frequency.

I'll probably go back and attempt the 'correct' way, but I'd restarted around ten or so times during the bad days of release, and I couldn't face watching another slow Rahanas docking to watch it just sit there and not take any more orders. Having the simulation 'not work' appears to be a common thread with their releases.

I suspect it's the action of getting so many eyes on it at the same time, but it does beg the question why they wouldn't Beta. They have a rabid enough fanbase to beta test this.

Honestly, travel engines fuckin' rule with the spool up - they go slow as poo poo if you just enter travel mode, but what you should do is hit Travel mode and IMMEDIATELY slam boost. You've only got like a single second to boost before travel mode takes, but (with the Discoverer) you can get up to 1600+ in that second before the windup cutoff which gets you up to speed WAY faster than the combat engine can.

With that said, I love the pitch rate on the combat engines, so...I am conflicted. OH THAT'S THRUSTERS
