So I was perusing the Steam store and I saw Elite: Dangerous was on MEGA SALE. I've been feeling space-sim hunger pangs for a little bit now but I had some questions before I made the jump (I have no experience with the Elite series):
  • A lot of my fondest space-memories were of playing Escape Velocity and its sequels. Does E:D have a similar gameplay flow? (ie: start with a dinky shuttle, do some missions, get a better ship, go be a mercenary, get a better ship, join a faction, get a better ship, etc etc.)
  • How long does that loop take? In EV I could typically expect to be upgrading my ship almost once a session, I suspect E:D is a more intensive sim with much longer turn-around.
  • How much variety is there in terms of ships and loadouts?
  • I understand that E:D has multiplayer, how does that work exactly? Is it a MMO? MMO-lite (like oldschool Guild Wars maybe, instanced everything)? Server-based?
  • What is the endgame goal with ED? Are there things I can aim for on my own or is it some kind of communal thing (do I need to join a guild to engage fully with the game, etc)?
Sorry it's a bit of a long list and I suspect a lot of it will be answered by the forthcoming OP, but I figured I'd ask anyways and see what folks have to say.

In order:
1. Yes, but that dinky shuttle can also be used to get you triple Elite if you really want to. It's a solid starting ship, and you can get the same ship for free forever.
2. Depends on how hard you go on it. Courier missions are cargoless and can be done quickly. There's also the Road to Riches, but now it's a bit more dicey due to new mechanics in populated space.
3. Lots. You can take most ships and outfit them for at least two different roles if you want (key word: most). The hauler is a good starting trading ship, but can also be a cheap exploration ship as well.
4. More MMO-lite than anything. Squadrons now help keep things interesting as you get to chat with others no matter where you are in the deep black.
5. Whatever you make it. Also join Diamond Frogs (link is above).

1. I was pushed towards this by a friend who also uses it as a Space Trucker, and that's all I've done in it for 70+ hours. It's even chiller than truck sim, because you're rarely in a position where crashing is even possible.

2. I got in with just base game (though I mught change that with Horizons on sale...) and have been perfectly fine. You just miss out on a few things, like access to a couple ships and landing on planets.

I found one thing I don't like about the new lighting model but it's really minor

Here's a screenshot I took in the old version of a barnacle on Witch Head Sector HW-W C1-7 C 3 that I found by flying to a coordinate found on the internet:

The star the planet orbits is a brown dwarf, which is a companion star of a yellow star. In the old lighting model, the closer brown dwarf was too dim to be the main light source of the planet, so the side facing the brown dwarf was the "night" side of the planet while the "day" side was the one facing the yellow planet. the "night" side had an eerie glow to it like it was lit by a full moon, except the light was from a brown dwarf.

It still looks drat cool, as things in this game do, but I liked the idea that brown dwarves couldn't light a surface properly no matter how prominent they are in the sky.

On the other hand, I found more barnacle sites and got first mapping on the planet :toot:

I did it in a random Krait I put together. All you need is an multiple SRV bay (I brought 4, but lost none. Some people were complaining so ymmv.), some cargo space, and a decent jump range for comfort to get to the sites...

You could comfortably do the missions in an unengineered T6

Canonn is the place. They have spreadsheets of all of the locations. I would recommend taking the time to do the Ram Tah missions from Meene rather than just grinding for that one piece and then having to come back. It took a few sessions, but was an interesting challenge.

You don't need to finish the first mission to 100% for it to be worth doing. You get a million per note, with a bonus if you find all of them.

Osirisisdead already posted a good guide but I did it in a hauler because I am both cheap and lazy.

https://s.orbis.zone/16n4

Small ship size so you can put it down close to the sites in question, plus two top mounted PDS to shoot down missiles that will otherwise flip your SRV forever. Legs long enough to get your travel time to manageable levels. Costs all of 2M but you'll have to engineer the FSD, which honestly ain't poo poo.

Don't break your SRV though.

e offline a tiny AFMU in that class one slot if you really want to. Or you may need a surface scanner nowadays, I'm not sure if the Guardian sites show up automatically in this brave new world of fun scanning.

nb though that if you're going to get the rest of the Guardian stuff, you'll need a ship that can carry cargo so you can get the obelisks to talk to you. But it's all just mats for the FSD booster.

Wow I just looked at the store page and guys, I don't want to be that guy on the Internet who isn't making GBS threads on every video game they play, but Elite: Dangerous has 1205 reviews in the past 30 days and 90% are positive.

I have to say the latest patch is pretty great. I mean USSes you can actually find. Exploring and feeling more engaged than honking then hovering your cursor over a line graph of planets to decide if I want to fly to them. Assassinate missions where I can actually find the target. Squadrons with a ladder system so there's a scoreboard to motivate play. And holy poo poo, Squadron Chat, which for the first time I feel like I am actually playing an online game with people more than seeing a hollow square ever did. And an ever-increasing diversity of ships that aren't outright gimping yourself to use.

I, too, am generally uncomfortable with being positive on the Internet, but the scanner changes have made me extremely happy. ~My immersion~ when exploring is so much better now (I mean every science fiction story has taught me that somebody's gotta work the sensors, after all), and just from a gameplay perspective, as you said, it's something to do in between jaw dropping views. This is a good direction for FDev to go and I hope they're taking note of the overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Speaking of trucks I hope they add a few more SRV models and a few configurations per SRV model like what fighters have so there's more variety to surface stuff and more of a point to carry huge SRV bays than just replacements of your one model of SRV.

Like there are group recommended surface combat missions but with such a limited number of player types and enemy types there are more interesting things to spend your time on if you're in a group.

As a newbie how should I make money and what parts/ships should I save for?

OK so the thing with Elite is that every ship has its own niche it's good at, so 'what ship you want to go for' is sort of subjective depending on what you like to do. Here's a couple of suggestions:

If you like flying space shootmans:

Eagle MKII - The cheapest ship in the game, bar the starting Shitwinder. Great little interceptor to harass small ships in, the most agile ship in the game, one of THE most fun ships to fly, period.
Viper MKIII - A fast heavy fighter that's surprisingly sturdy for its relative size while being one of the three fastest chassises in the game. Also very fun to fly, especially if you want somethign that flies like a sports car.
Diamondback Scout - More expensive than the others, but has a great frameshift range for a combat ship. It's bigger and chunkier than the Viper but very agile and super flexible. Great if you want to kick rear end, take names, and move around regularily.

If you want to take it peaceful and make your first millions with trading and playing Euro Truck Hauler in space or scratching at rocks with mining lasers:

Hauler - Space bread truck, the Hauler has all the firepower of half a Sidewinder but can fit a decent load of cargo and jump surprisingly far with an empty cargo bay.
Adder - The Adder is basically a slightly bigger, chunkier Hauler that's got a little bit more cargo space and the capacity to actually carry a couple of guns. IF you can afford the Adder you should probably just flat skip the Hauler to be honest.
Cobra MKIII - The classic Cobra can be fit to carry around 40 tons of cargo and still have enough teeth to discourage low-level pirates.
Type-6 Transporter - The good old T6 is basically a cargo pod with thrusters welded on, but it's pretty much the definitive space cargo hauler. It's surprisingly cheap to upgrade for its price and can carry a whopping 100 tons of cargo while still retaining a cargo scoop and just enough shields to deflect space junk. It's also still relatively mobile, unlike its bigger brothers.

If you haven't quite decided what you want to do, or want to keep your options open:

Adder - Again, the Adder is basically a glorified cargo shuttle, but it's also the cheapest ship in the game that can carry a C2 Medium gun. It's surprisingly agile without 20-odd tons of cargo knocking around in the back, too, so when configured right it makes for a decent show in.. pretty much anything you could want.
Cobra MKIII - The Cobra is basically the Millennium Falcon of the Elite universe - and for a reason. It's got enough internal bays to fit a lot of equipment, enough firepower to hold its own, and a giant loving afterburner for when things get too hairy. Again, if you have one of these, you can tweak it to do almost anything you could ever want it to - and something else tomorrow.

As for what parts to go for, here's a couple of tips:

*First off, when you sell stuff back to the store, you get back its full purchase cost - the only things you're left holding the bill for are any repair and restock fees. Don't be afraid to experiment.

*One of the most important parts on your ship is actually the power distributor - upgrading it means you have more power available to your SYS, ENG and WEP capacitors and increases their regeneration rate, making your ship literally better at everything. The power distributor also tends to be the cheapest component on your ship. If you intend to do any fighting whatsoever, the PD should probably be your first priority when upgrading your ship.

*Your second priority should probably be the frameshift drive. Upgrading your FSD makes it easier and faster to travel and has literally no downsides as long as your power core can keep up.

*Your next priorities (after you've fit weapons you like) should probably be your shields and thrusters in your preferred priority. Upgrade your power core when you start running low on power output.

*Again, you don't really lose anything when selling your ships back, so if you're aiming for a super expensive ship - don't feel shy about going for an intermediate upgrade in-between. If you're in a Sidewinder and want a Cobra, feel free to grab an Adder - having a bigger ship means you produce money faster and can get to the Cobra faster, too.

*Never fly anything you can't afford to lose.

If you select a trader and right click the sector there is an import command which tells the trader to sell stuff to only stations in that sector. You can't tell them to do this for a specific station. However you can go to the trader's behavior tab and there will be an autotrade order there for the import command. You can expand that order and edit the wares list to make the trader only fetch what you want to supply to the specific station.

This works pretty well to automatically keep wharfs and shipyards supplied, but deleting the extra wares from the list is a horrible amount of clicking and you have to do it for every single trader individually as far as I can tell.

Hence, I'm asking if there's any better way to do this cause I have a fleet of 30 traders and capital ships to get built.
