New Bumblebee trailer. There is an extremely G1 looking Shockwave, Optimus and other designs. Is this a stealth reboot?

Thing is, the G1 designs look weirdly out of place, like they've stepped right out of those games from a few years back.

The CGI in the Cybertron scenes also look worse than the rest of the movie. Makes me think it was a late addition or just the lower budget showing.

Effects shots for trailers specifically are also frequently/typically rushed/not final/whipped up last second vs the finished stuff that goes in the real movie.

All that effort into making them look like G1, and they don't get a guy with a shrill voice to do Starscream. That's going to bother me because everything else looks top notch.

The Cybertron shots are video gamey like Milkfred said, but it's unavoidable with this aesthetic.

That's not Starscream. In a fanbase-enraging move, they confirmed it is Blitzwing.

Huh, what a weird choice.

Just a purple palette swap to Blitzwing and his appearance would be in line with everything else they've shown. Either the suits really love that red, or the switcheroo must be a part of the story. Actually, it's most likely they combined Blitzwing and Starscream into one character for the movie to not gently caress with Bay continuity, because Starscream(Blitzwing) is next to his cartoon bros in that scene with Shockwave. All three become the Cybertron flyers from the start of the G1 show. It all makes sense if the character is an amalgamate.

Starscream looks great and they got classic Bee going so I’m cool with a PTSD robot hiding away from the horrors of WW2.

I thought the main Decepticon flyer in this movie was Thundercracker (or some other guy), not Starscream?

The most recent trailer looks great. Going back to the G1 aesthetic for the Cybertronian bits at least really sets this movie apart. I wonder if there's any overlap between the folks doing the CGI on this and the crew that did the work on the most recent Transformers games.

Cybertron even looks different. Is this really sticking with the Bay continuity?

edit: A quick glance around the net seems to make it seem like this is a reboot of some sort, but disguised.

Cybertron looks different every time they show it in the Bay movies.

As mentioned, the plane guy beating 'Bee up is named Blitzwing.

I think most of the people who made those games for Activision is now part of the teams making Call of Duty and Destiny games.

Eh, his look in the TFP cartoon was less stupid and they did away with it at the end. He also ran through 4 seasons of another cartoon with a normal looking face.

Sure, but beyond the version depicted through Optimus' memories in the first film, there are similarities, like the weird hexagonal shapes and so on. The glimpse we see of Cybertron from space is basically right out of G1.

I take it as more of a soft reboot like the latest X-men films. Same continuity but maybe the third movie (and fourth, and fifth) can be casually and hilariously erased.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but Bumblebee is using some throwback G1 designs for the Cybertron scenes while Hasbro is about to release a new G1 prequel toyline showing Transformers on Cybertron before they came to Earth.

It's not a coincidence. Pretty sure around the time of Last Knight's release Hasbro said they had plans to do a full CGI prequel movie about the events on Cybertron. I'm guessing that got scuttled and they've repurposed some of it into Bumblebee and other projects.

So, Bumblebee comes out in a week. It snuck up on me, too. The first critical reviews are coming out and they seem to be quite positive, much more than any other Transformers film. Initial reports do paint it as a soft reboot but it doesn't seem like it'll be truly consistent with any of the other films, especially with some of the spoilers floating around.

That kind thinking is two decades out of date.

Now-a-days, the movie and the toy are just glorified commercials for the franchise.

It's one of those things that has come to "represent" the 80's in a way, like if I saw someone with a Decepticon tattoo I wouldn't assume they were an expert on Transformers I'd just think they were probably an 80s kid.
