I just discovered Citations Needed. I had heard it mentioned before but like a dumbass I checked out citation (singular) needed instead and didn’t get the hype.

Worse is that I had been following Adam Johnson, one of the hosts on twitter for a bit now and hadn’t put two and two together until just recently.

poo poo slaps yo.

Or maybe, I’ve found an expression close to my own personal politics and keep saying to myself “well of course! Why aren’t we framing issue x this way!”

You're not the only one.

Matt's comments on the mediocre QAnon podcast reminded me of Matt Taibbi's explanation for widespread conspiracism: not only the fragmented media, but political leaders failing to present the population with a coherent worldview that explains their daily experiences as part of a bigger picture. Can we pinpoint a moment or a period when that began? Matt's analysis seems to be that Carter preceded Clinton as a major turning point where the Democratic Party abandoned labour, but he rarely discusses Carter.

I recently reread FDR's "I welcome their hatred" speech. Can you imagine any Democrat besides Sanders giving an updated version of that speech today?

The best part of Citations Needed is when they explain how to find their podcast and are very obviously mad that they named it without knowing that there was a similarly named podcast about random Wikipedia articles.

Like a year ago or so they were listed in an AV Club “best political podcasts” article and they used the logo from the wikipedia podcast. and also called them “very liberal” lol

Citations Needed still had to clarify the difference in their Patreon a year into producing the show.

Speaking of Chapo and Citations, I just got caught up w Citations Needed. I would really like to get into another informative podcast like this. My main podcasts are Chapo, Cum Town, Red Scare, Bodega Boys, and Citations Needed. I don’t mind humor/info but I really appreciate the balance of Citations Needed.

So, please recommend. It’s good praxis.

Are you talking about just another media criticism podcast? If not i'd recommend economic update, war nerd, moderate rebel and intercepted.

Economic Update is what I always recommend to people who are getting into socialism, don't want to just read Das Kapital, and want a socialist perspective on current events. The host is Richard Wolff, and he also tackles some common pro-capitalist, anti-socialist canards like he did in his guest spot on Chapo #186.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Hg3hdAUAPs

His monthly guest, Harriett Fraad, tackles capitalism's effects on family and relationships. She has a podcast of her own called Capitalism Hits Home.

Yep that's correct. The podcast usually covers some kind of historical war related thing and then spend a bit of the podcast talking about current events.

Moderate Rebels basically covers foreign policy, and intercepted is basically Jeremy Scahill talking about current affairs. My only gripe with Intercepted is that they frequently ask for donations despite being owned by billionaire Pierre Omidyar.

At this point I'm pretty sure people listen to Red Scare for the same reason they listened to Avril Lavigne. She's not gonna gently caress you, skater boi.

Street Fight rules; just don't start with the Sunday call-in episodes. Listen to them later if you really get into it.

I've been meaning to sub to Radio War Nerd for a month so I can get those sweet sweet Years of Lead episodes, but I have a big backlog as it is.

Economic update reminds me of humorless old teacher who also worked at revolution books. I agree it’s useful as baby’s first Marxism, but kind of irritating after that. I consider it agitprop.

Other podcasts I’d recommend are radio shows. KPFA makes a bunch of good ones, and some middling ones.

Against the Grain
Letter and Politics
Guns and Butter is more the latter category but can be fun.

This is Hell - is a show on WNUR in Chicago and excellent as a podcast. They score excellent guests and I enjoy the host as well.

Finally the Dig by Jacobin is usually pretty good.

I found Red Scare after Sailor Socialism Dasha sassed that InfoWars lady, and I've laughed pretty hard at a couple of their tangents ("Venmo feminism" was hilarious), but tbh I don't listen to it very much because the hosts seem like they're performatively contrarian and getting increasingly obnoxious and uncomradely.

Can anyone tell me if Cum Town is actually any good ever? I tried listening to an episode and it was like aggressively unfunny. It was like being stuck on a bus behind a bench of utterly shitfaced bros yelling about zits, but not actually saying anything funny about them. Did I just catch a bad episode? A lot of people I find funny seem to like it, so I feel like I must have just come at it wrong. Gimme your must-listen ep and I'll give it a shot.

Cum town is one of those things that you have to just let grow on you. It’s like a fungus or a case of gonorrhea. I also didn’t like it at first, but now it’s probably my favorite show.

If CTH appealed to me because it felt like LF era something awful, Cumtown appeals to me because it feels like a similar era 4chan, when it was smart people saying dumb things and not actual nazis.

Henchman of Santa
Aug 21, 2010
Cum Town is like three very clever 14-year-olds. My roommate listens to it all the time and it has very funny bits but also a significant number of jokes that are really just racist or where the punchline is rape.

I'm not a podcast cop so I wouldn't call anyone a bad person for liking it but it's also not worth twisting in knots to defend.

Yep although on my podcast app it looks like they have episodes going as far back as August of this year. It looks like you can see all the older episodes on their website.

Their patreon gives you access to the full interviews with the guests they have although it's through unlisted youtube videos.

Radio War Nerd is patreon only.
