Sail when it's windy

Skied with a bunch of Texans that I work with at keystone today. It was super fun. I am not really sure what is going on but everyone must be on the icon pass this year because there is just no lift lines.

I've now gone snowboarding four times :toot: Took a couple lessons so I'd know what to work on and how, and I'm super glad I did. Still lots of practice to do, but today was the first day I can honestly say I did a proper carve on a proper run. Feels very good

focus right now is on keeping more weight on my leading foot while turning, and I should probably be bending more at the knee to soak up impacts. it's all starting to come together though

Got my first turns in today, at Squaw. Could definitely use a refresh but found some good snow nonetheless. We’re staying til Monday and it sounds like that might be a decent pow day so my stoke is biding its time

Oh, also I can’t stop checking out how people are carrying their skis now.

I carried mine tips down today and felt like a total fraud

I carry my skis in the trash, where they belong.

My snowboard goes sideways, bindings out, tip dragging along the concrete though

I'm sure that last year probably had some sort of effect on people planning early season trips for this year too. I work a decent amount of the ski country flights and it hasn't been very busy yet but I think that's pretty normal. The week around Christmas is where it really picks up.

Either tips down or like a hot mess.

Could be. Just use to more traffic this time of year.

The strap on the back of your helmet isn’t to secure your skis with?

Yep, that's pretty much it.
Ski patrol was kind enough to put up a sign that said “We do not recommend skiing in the woods today” at the top of lift 9, so the trees on 9 were great today. Three more days until the Skiing Public arrive.

This Master Level version of this technique is to hold your board by the front heel loop while you drag the tail.

I do this but I stop and pick it up before I get to the concrete...

Doesn't matter which way you try to carry a snowboard though because the edge always rubs against your clothes and eventually rips them.

It’s weird. I started carrying my skis tips down and now all these people with goggle tans and all flylow gear keep giving me fist bumps and inviting me to hang out at “the mayor’s office.” Also I was walking toward the back of the line for Gemini with my son and a patroller just rolled up out of nowhere, pointed to his sled, and said “get on.”

Haneda-New Chitose is one of the busiest air routes in the world, it would’ve been not much to get a cheap flight there from Tokyo and skip the train travel. That’s far enough that a flight makes sense.

Enjoy though, still haven’t been up there yet. Waiting for good news from the mountains closer to Tokyo, hopefully can get a day or two during the Christmas break.

Ah I see. drat I'm gonna store that for when I do a snowboarding only Japan trip. Makes sense!

If you are headed to Niseko the gentemstick shop is not ideally located but it also has a cafe. I seem to remember demoing was pretty expensive.

Also flights are pretty cheap. From Narita it was under $100 with a ski bag and suit case on Jet star. Vanilla air also had cheap flights.

Fwiw we took the bullet train back to Tokyo but only because it was obviously something to do once.

Went skiing for the first time in 20 years. Loveland Ski Area was great with zero lines and plenty of trails for me. Took a lesson the first day and quickly got the swing of things for the next two. Managed to go down a few easier blues and accidentally down a black. I love Texas but mountains and cold are what I crave.

Bought some new skis to replace my decade old pair, some nice new Atomics

I've been demoing a bunch of stuff and you owe it to yourself to try out the Elan Ampibio Fusion if you have a chance. I have never had more fun carving up groomers as I did today, but they just aren't versatile enough to be a main ski (and they're expensive as gently caress). But holy poo poo, were they fun

I'm out there Jerry and I'm LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT
The timing worked out well for me to get a new pair of skis from a local manufacturer instead of ordering online.

I picked up a pair of Instinct Seekers this weekend. Put the new G3 Zed bindings on them and I couldn't be happier with my touring setup right now. Not that I've got a lot of experience, I did my AST-1 this past weekend in the Whitewater backcountry and I've been grinning since Sunday remembering the turns down.

I'm planning to head to back down to Whitewater for a couple of days of lift-access downhill next week to get as much time on my skis as possible before going up with Stellar. The forecast is looking pretty good for Christmas week skiing.

The season felt a little slow to get started but I'm feeling the stoke now!

Skied the Canyons side of Park City today, snow was a lot better than I expected, pretty much everything except Super Condor was running, though a bunch of runs were closed to try to keep them fresh for the holiday influx of people. The Iron Mountain area was such a great addition, a lot of fun runs over there even most of them were closed today.

Yeah, even if I'm not the best skier it'll still be a bunch of helicopter rides and I decided I couldn't turn that down.

The skiing part should be pretty great too though, and what a way to cap off a year in the mountains!

My excitement levels are pretty high. :)

So when my wife and I booked our first trip to Squaw for this past weekend, we decided to make it a 3-day and tack on the Monday after. As luck would have it, a nice little storm rolled through Sunday night and freshened everything up for a total bluebird mini-pow day on Monday. God drat it was fun, and the mountain was EMPTY. I think 70 is pretty hosed today. I was gonna go to Copper but ended up turning around in Idaho Springs when my ETA was still 2+ hours into the future. I probably could have gone to Winter Park but I just backtracked a little and went to Eldora yet again. Snow was alright at least!
