Oh. Well, now it makes sense why all the Monokids started booing when the boss fight banter veered over to making a paradise for kids. Whatever's running them, it's obviously more closely related to Monaca than anything else.

If you're talking about when that happened in Chapter 2, that was just because Jataro was hated, even by the Monokuma kids. They would have cheered anything if the alternative was Jataro, and it's not particularly indicative of what goal the Monokuma kids are following.

I prefer Monaca to Junko, honestly.

There's a few reasons why I love Monaca, and one of the primary ones is I think that she's just straight up better executed than Junko. In fact, I would say that Monaca is Junko done right - an ice-cold manipulator that finds personal weaknesses and then starts mindfucking people with them until they become putty in her hands, wrapped in a diabetes-inducingly adorable and innocent facade. Junko manipulates and breaks people, sure, but with Monaca it's much more personal.

The way she casually triggers Kotoko's PTSD in order to get her back in the adult-killing mood or exploits Nagisa's crush on her and his complex about high expectations to get him doing what she needs him to do instead of asking questions is something Junko could have really profited from if she had pulled similar stuff. I mean, it's not like the casts of DR1 and DR2 were short on issues that could have been exploited. We get something like this in the form of the motives, but it wasn't enough IMO. The fact that Monaca is a figure introduced from the start and developed throughout the story as opposed to being a last act wonder helps as well.

As an aside, there's a thing I read on The Internet (tm) - I forget where it's actually from, so take this with a Dead Sea's worth of salt - that Monaca was actually the result of Kodaka being unhappy with the way that Junko actually turned out to be a popular character, so he set out to make an antagonist that would actually be hated. I have no idea whether that's actually true or not, but it would make sense with the way how utterly horrible she is.

Dangan Ronpa is almost always trying to be some sort of social commentary, whether it is effective or tasteful is a different discussion.

Honestly I like the theory of Junko and her actions in regards to forming a cult of personality, the problem is the series undermines that theory with the reality of Junko constantly. That is she’s kind of insane all the time. Arguably the Warriors of Hope backstory about how she found them and gave them purpose is the best example of what she should/could have been as a mastermind villain who ended the world.

Finding the disenfranchised and the broken and twisting them to her ideals until she has enough followers to start a global crisis. Add in that several of those followers from DR2 are dangerous powerful individuals in their own right and the despair apocalypse becomes a little more believable, until Junko talks for five seconds and her batshit rapidly shifting personality ruins any potential for her to look reasonable as a cult leader.

No, this woman! It says she's the author of "Tara ☆ Spa"!
Tarasupa? What's that?
It says she's a manga artist, so it must be the title of a manga, right?
Not just any manga! A manga masterpiece! The drawings of food are so well done, it's said that reading it will make you start to drool!
Yeah, I feel like I saw my son reading it...
So Teacher Second Fry was just a penname for this woman... What a shocking scoop!

Well if she's that famous, I kinda wanna meet her.

That's exactly what you would say if you were gonna sell the thing!

♪ BGM: Wonderful Dead 004

Alright, so that's done, now let's go and talk to the other people. Side note - ever since the scene with Komaru having her big motivation speech, she now walks and runs differently. She no longer grips the megaphone with both hands while running, and while walking, she now holds the megaphone pointed upwards and walks more upright. It's a slight change, but it does show an increase in confidence, and it's a really nice touch I didn't even notice while playing. It's super subtle, but shows they care.

You've really grown since I first met you...
No, not really. The reason I was able to act so cool was because of the sacrifice you made, Shirokuma.
Hehe, so I was that cool, huh? But you're still *much* cooler than me!
No, no, you were much more cool.
...So how much longer are you gonna keep up this modesty battle?

Beats me, first I've heard of it either. Shouldn't you just ask him?
I—It's suspicious... He's had plenty of chances to use a trump card before now... Why didn't he even tell any of the other adults about it?
Who knows? But it is Haiji, after all. I'm sure the man has secrets.
Secrets, huh...
I hope those secrets don't come back to haunt us.

Your speech really touched my heart, lady!
Oh... Did I actually like...say anything like that?
Well...I remember it being *something* like that.

Now, this update has gone on for about a mile and a half, so let's cut things here. Next time, we'll talk to Haiji and find out what this "trump card" business is about.

Toko and Komaru have been great the last few updates :3:

Also I trust Haiji about as far as I can throw him

It's gonna be really awkward when Komaru finds out her favorite idol tried to kill her brother. Oh, you said that already.

Also, I like how Haiji had a trump card this whole time but never bothered saying anything about it or doing anything about it until just now.

It's been a couple of chapters, so let's do some voice actor talk.

Haiji Towa is voiced by Matt Mercer. He's a dude who has had an interesting career. At one point he was mostly known for being 'that guy who sounds like Troy Baker' but he has completely overcome that and is now one of the most prolific and well known voice actors out there. His list of significant roles is extremely extensive, but let's try and list a few. McCree from Overwatch, Jotaro Kujo from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan, Chrom from Fire Emblem, Yusuke Kitagawa from Persona 5, and many many more. He's also well known for his show Critical Role, a popular web series in which voice actors play Dungeons and Dragons. He's a really great voice actor and hearing him is always a good thing.

Hiroko Hagakure is voiced by Jessica Straus, somebody who I don't recognise. But a quick look at their resume shows that she's been in the business for a while, voicing the Amazon class in Diablo 2 back in 2000 (and reprising the role in Heroes of the Storm). Since then she's been in various video games and anime, such as being Saki Konishi and Hanako Ohtani in Persona 4, Juri in Street Fighter or Tianzi in Code Geass. Listening to her various roles it sounds like she's got pretty good range, but mainly voices strong women with deep voices. She does a good job as Hiroko. She doesn't get a lot of dialogue compared to say, Komaru, but she's definitely able to capture the 'super relaxed MILF' vibe in all her dialogue in a natural way.

Next let's move onto the bears. Shirokuma and Kurokuma are linked voice actor wise. They're part of the Toko/Genocide Jill/Junko connection and add to it. In this case, Shirokuma is voiced by Amanda Celine Miller who as I mentioned in a previous edition voices Toko and Junko, while Kurokuma is voiced by Erin Fitzgerald who voices Genocide Jill and some of Junko's personalities. I like that they keep adding to this, it's a nice bit of meta casting. Anyway, Shirokuma is supposedly a boy, but sure doesn't sound like it, which made his gender very confusing to me when I played this game. Despite that, you can feel the kindness in Shirokuma's lines and that's what's important. Kurokuma is objectively voice acted well, but I can't stand him. To be fair, that's entirely the point. Even the kids don't like him. But I bet Erin had an absolute blast playing him, and both characters are further proof of not only the vocal range of their actors but also their acting ability itself.

You know, I remember Shirokuma said he painted his body white, but then why is there a Monokuma that's all black? Did the kids just conveniently decide to do the reverse?
