Do you like scary movies?

Finally sitting through Autumn on TubiTV since I've really enjoyed the books since way back when Moody was still giving the first book away free on his website, and I'm a bit disappointed in the movie adaptation. The books really do a good job of building up from the chaos and confusion from the mass deaths and the gradual evolution of the walking dead while the various survivors are trying to make sense of it all, but the movie is like a version of Cliff Notes squished together. If one's read the books, it sorta works, but for someone who's never read them, it comes across janky.

the Final Destination series has a pretty good success rate. the fourth one is lovely but 1, 2, and 5 are all great and 3 is weaker but still fun.

That is my biggest problem with 3 for sure. It's maybe a bit too unreal for a series that's been pretty grounded and visceral up to that point.

Scream 3 has some weirdness to it because it was entirely re-written a few weeks before filming due to Columbine, but I still like the way the movie ended up even if it isn't quite as good as the other entires.

Everybody always says the teens in the Ft13 films are annoying, but the remake was the only one, to me, where they intentionally tried to make them as annoying as possible and it just ruins it for me. I just want to turn off the film because they're so annoying. If they'd toned them down just a bit it would have been more palpable.

I dunno. Supernaturals Sam was pretty likeable in that, as was the fake final girl (the final girl switcheroo was one of the most surprising things in those movies). The kills were just plain brutal compared to the other movies, which would be tougher with more sympathetic characters.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the only good characters in the f13 remake are the Asian and black best bros who unfortunately receive exactly the fate you would expect of the minority characters in a f13 remake

There's an article here that goes over what was altered more in-depth: http://wickedhorror.com/features/script-pieces-kevin-williamsons-scream-3/

It was re-written from the ground up. The original script (by Kevin Williamson) had Matthew Lillard's character return as the killer and a a cult of high-schoolers become the Ghostface killer. The move to Hollywood in the final film was done out of necessity as the movie was kept on the same schedule and there was almost no time to secure locations. It isn't mentioned in the article, but I've heard that Craven ended up writing most of the returning cast's dialog due to Kruger's characterization not matching the previous films. (It's been suggested that Carrie Fisher did re-writes as well, which is partly why she has a cameo.)

I know just from these threads you've seen so many and there different ways to interpret "bleak and brutal" but hopefully these offer something new:

Murderlust (1985), It's kind of not very good and in a suburban setting but god drat this movie feels grimy, mostly from the not great transfer and how unlikable the main character killer is

The Stepfather (1987), Kinda sorta, in that it's about a killer living in a "typical" domestic situation for a bit but still also being a killer

The Manson Family (2003), a docudrama I liked when it was new but only remember now because of this post, IIRC the entire movie is made up of 8mm dramatizations of events

Water Power (1977), if you want to go waaaaaaay overboard, also this movie was meant as a porno. One of those ones like Caligula where there's several different versions of it including the equivalent of an R rated one

Crawlspace (1986), Klaus Kinski leads a normal life as the landlord of an apartment building, except it's Klaus Kinski so he also has a basement where brings people to torture/kill them

There's really nothing like Henry. It's got a tone that I haven't really seen anywhere else. But something in the ballpark in terms of subject matter and bleakness, but with a more humorous bent, is Man Bites Dog.

Sounds like one of many Ted Bundy inspired movies so maybe search that way.

That reminds me of a somewhat more tame yet arguably more cynical take on a rapist photographer scenario that's been long forgotten, Love Crimes (1992) starring Sean Young. It was infamously despised when it was released but honestly isn't that bad.
