This is obvious news but for the sake of the thread’s chronicle I just thought it should be mentioned that Hollywood, who totally sympathizes and cares for the people speaking up for the #metoo movement, last night gave a “Best Picture” award to a film directed by a pederast who left production halfway through.

It’s an interesting dilemma. Do you punish everyone else who worked on the film by saying that it shouldn’t win awards? Would it be enough if Singer himself is locked out of the awards race? Or does the cast deserve some pushback, given that they willingly signed on to work with Singer, who has allegations against him going back decades?

Also of weird mention is that everyone was super careful to never mention the director in their speeches. So that kinda smacks to me of someone telling everyone "AVOID THE SINGER ISSUE".

I would argue that a lot of behind-the-scenes people have to take whatever work they can and don’t really have a choice, but this decision of whether or not to award BH despite its director is made much easier by the fact that on top of all that it’s also an absurdly lovely movie.

It would be one thing if the movie were worth a drat and not one of the worst movies to ever get major award considerations. Absolutely amateurish, boring filmmaking with a pathetic script that descended into witless self-parody.

True. And I'm talking about rewarding the movie at the awards vs not rewarding the movie, not whether we should criticize the cast and crew just for making the movie.

Isn't that used against so-called 'Bernie Bros' all of the time, usually by people who turn out to be exactly the kind of person who are progressive up until the moment they might have to pay a cent more in taxes and/or they get exposed as sex creeps?

I think the intention behind it is pretty similar - people who use those terms are saying people are progressive so long as they don't have to vote for a woman as president. (I think it's wildly inaccurate for 99.99% of Bernie supporters, but I do think that's what the intent is)

His tv show was well above par.

The part about not wanting to date a fat girl was interesting because well she spelled it out and he was just like 'huh'

Nevertheless he did something that if you do it on the streets of New Orleans or New York you will be classified as a sexual predator

which is not that funny

Also that episode where he literally tries to rape someone and gets insulted because he's too bad at raping for it to count as rape. Hilarious.

That scene was written by the women in the scene, Pamela Adlon, his best friend, writing partner, and co-producer (also the voice of Bobby Hill).

Pamela Adlon's show is terrific and the worst part of this whole scandal, apart from the actual victims of course, is that her show seems to have been derailed and it's not clear when it's coming back. Fuckin sucks.

Yes, actually I’m saying if an actress wants to write a scene where she gets raped by her friend, it’s perfectly fine for her to do that. Using it as an example of how gross Louis is seems weird, since the scene was her idea, and her creation, and executed to her vision.

You are out of your goddam mind if you don’t think Pamela knew every scrap and tittle of Louis CK’s deviancy, they’ve been working together almost as long as he and Silverman.

I'm not OP but here's me saying: A slightly gross attempted rape scene is more okay when it's written by a female writer with a record of thoughtful, feminist works than when it's written by a male sexual predator

Is this supposed to be controversial?

Maybe writing herself as his rape victim was a way of outing him or mocking him? I dunno. Writing in a rape scene for yourself is creepy and weird as hell.

This describes most of Louis CK's body of work but it seemed like a commentary rather than a biography, until it wasn't.

Oh, well, that's all water under the bridge, as I always say. Water under the bridge!

People like Louis CK are also sexual predators and should be considered within the scope of the thread.

There is a lot to say about Allen, though. I can't remember if this article was posted here or not: https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a27233/dylan-farrow-woody-allen-movies/

Stephen Marche posted:

But with Woody Allen, such a separation [between art and artist] is impossible, because his movies are so thoroughly about himself, and about his own condition, and, as it turns out, the moral universe in which he exists—one in which there is no expectation of justice.
...
But it's not just Hollywood. It's the rest of us, too. What about those of us who are Woody Allen's fans? What the hell have we been watching all this time?

Then there's this rather disturbing quote from a People Magazine piece on Allen from 1976: https://people.com/archive/cover-story-angst-ridden-humorist-vol-6-no-14/

Woody Allen posted:

I’m open-minded about sex. I’m not above reproach; if anything, I’m below reproach. I mean, if I was caught in a love nest with 15 12-year-old girls tomorrow, people would think, yeah, I always knew that about him. [Pause.] Nothing I could come up with would surprise anyone. I admit to it all.

Louis CK was actually one of my favorite comedians ever before all this poo poo became publicized and he became a giant loving reactionary baby about it. He sucks and it won't be the first time I have to give up on a performer or show I really liked (Bill Cosby: Himself is one of my favorite standup shows). Life goes on. You don't get a pass because you are a great writer or performer.

I should probably give up on performers who are scientology cultists as well, as some of them like Tom Cruise are very powerful within that organization and likely have done stuff as bad or worse that will never become public because they're ten times as powerful as either of those comedians.
