I really enjoyed that. Having the main characters constantly overthinking everything was funny and helped you get to know them. The animation flourishes added to it and the OP is kindof great.

I watched the initial broadcast. They adapted chapters 1, 12, and 5
Are the chapters always completely stand-alone or does it start having arcs and stuff later?

A fun first ep. I like the intro--has some nods to old James Bond movie credit sequences.

I know it's canon that Fujiwara is moe with a high-pitched voice but I just don't hear her like that mentally.

The VHS effect for their imaginations running wild is interesting.

There are arcs, but even the single chapters have tons of callbacks and references to previous chapters

Early chapters are pretty much stand-alone. Arcs and stuff start seeping in once Ishigami Yuu gets introduced.

The lunch chapter was the one I was most looking forward to seeing and they nailed it. I was giggling like crazy.

Not using "How Cute" is sacrilege of the highest order, murder all Crunchyroll employees :goonsay:

Other than that, this show is perfection and is the Shaft adaptation I always wanted despite it not actually being Shaft. Kaguya's VA is great, Shirogane's VA is great, Fujiwara is great, everything is great.

It's just great. :allears:

I wasn't sure how long the gimmick would last.
But before I realized it, the entire episode was over and I loved every moment of it.
This is good stuff!

What's the issue with "adorable"? It seems appropriately patronizing.

The catchphrase has been translated both by the fan TLs and the official Viz TL as "How Cute" so that's kinda what all manga readers wanted here too

Crunchyroll translates bad, said 'how adorable' instead of Kaguya's famous 'how cute.' *Cue mass-constipation*

I don't even want to see what happens if you gain CHIM outside of a pre-coded system.

I've seen some claims that the translation was done by Aniplex but cannot confirm it.

That was not the line. Crunchyroll translated it as "That's cute."

Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
Actually, Crunchyroll used "it's cute" for the first one and changed it slightly every time. It seems like the translator didn't consider it a catchphrase at all and just winged it based on the specific context.

Irony Be My Shield
Jul 29, 2012

That does seem like a mistake, it might also be due to different translators being assigned to different parts of the episode. It didn't really register with me though, I recognized it as a catchphrase due to how the lines were framed/delivered.

The other problem is that the CR translation has Kaguya calling them Shirogane and Chika when the overly polite and proper heir to a giant corporation actually calls them President and Fujiwara. This blows up two plot beats later on.

The official manga translation makes the same mistake so I’m surprised it was carried over here. :(

That's not a mistake, it's a choice. And actually she even calls him Miyuki in another scene.

But in a general sense I agree that it can feel awkward to have the names they say out loud not match what's in the subtitles.

No, it's a mistake. She isn't on first name terms with her best friend who she's known from childhood, that's important!

E: And like people said it ruins some stuff later on. Really annoying thing for them to gently caress up.

I don't even know why they change them in the first place. What purpose does it serve having the subs be different from the name the character is literally using?

Irony Be My Shield
Jul 29, 2012

Because the way people address each other in Japanese is different to how people address each other in English. Using someone's family name is a lot more common in Japanese, for instance. If you always keep it exactly the same it can come across as stilted and unnatural.

Although in this case if it is supposed to come across as strange they should be doing something to replicate that.

Dabir

Just using the correct names would be fine in this context, even in English, trust us.

I don't mind the narrator in principle, as like a sports announcer who adds farcical drama to proceedings, but I do hope they tone it down a little now that they've aready made the joke about this not REALLY being all about power games and rationality.
