I thought log horizon explored the game system really well and I miss seeing that. Like when they figured out making food, or building costs. That part of the show really interested me.

There are other mangas like that, but if you like them comes down to personal preference.

A Certain Middle-aged man's VRMMO activity log, Only Sense Online are two I know that does this both in a very similar way, but one is a gender bender and the other is just played straight for laughs.

I was one of the few people who made it through No Game No Life because I enjoyed the gamey aspects of the show enough to cringe my way through the rest of the show.

I can't defend the movie at all though. It begins with 10 minutes of unexplained grimdark before the little sis shows up to gently caress the big bro in very explicit terms. That's where I gave up.

Yeah I really liked how the players experimented with the gamey mechanics in Log Horizon. I wish the second season wasn't bad but there's always the LN.

This one is pretty chill and has a few interesting concepts attached to it, plus the whole aspect of him grinding materials to craft specific custom gear accompanied by the methodical crafting of them is neat early on. The whole subplot of the vrmmo world being full of living, cognizant AI and so it's essentially a world in a bottle is an interesting one to explore. Makes me wonder if it'll, as the series winds down, deal with the ramifications of hitting the "off switch", essentially eradicating an entire population. Probably not, but at least as it goes, it's fun to see Earth deftly avoid the harem forming around him.

While we're here and asking for better things, can we have "people trying to be assertive to live up to a false image in another world" like 3/4 of the people in this, and the main character of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord, except without being this or that because both are bad

Did Overlord ever really go anywhere with that? The plot I remember was that he was quite a timid man who just roleplayed an evil lich in his evil roleplaying megawhale guild, but when he got reincarnated/transferred he did actually end up having to live with those consequences, one of which being his now-actually-for-real genocidally-loyal underling NPCs and the fact that as a lich heightened emotions were squashed down. They played it for comedy a bunch but it felt like there could have been a gem of a plotline there as a regular human being tried to wrestle with succumbing to being an emotionless evil lich or fought to keep his human side intact.

No. I gave up on the anime because of that.

I was hoping they would play up the mystery aspect of figuring out what happened and hopefully find another player, and who is this other high-level mage that turned one of my subordinates with a super powerful magic item. But no, it's just playing out demon lord fantasies, extremely thirsty female demon characters, and unnecessary politics.

That's what gets me about this outrage. If people think this is bad, it's only going to get worse because this first episode was actually well executed and inoffensive as far as first episodes go. Even the Melty's behavior is a plot point and coherent which is more than I can give last seasons dumpster fire of a first episode with Goblin Slayer.

We are just now starting the Naofumi edgelord phase and Raph was only teased. If the people getting upset at the false rape accusation are losing it over this first episode, I can't wait for uncomfortable implications love interests and drilling more holes because the rest are too loose :unsmigghh: if the anime even gets that far.

I didn't make it through the first episode because I've read the translated webnovel and every time Melty shows up I remember all the suffering she both causes and recieves. I kept reading because I have a friend who kept insisting that as dire as some things got, eventually :science: would happen and it would be amazing. It was, actually, but not worth the misogyny that Naofumi radiates in normal conditions.

My personal take on Melty is that she's an ex-girlfriend of the author and you can tell every time he runs into her again IRL because the current plot drops and Melty shows up to do something terrible and comeuppance worthy. Which gets a little awkward and shoehorned after she's killed forever the first time. And just makes getting her parents approval to marry her loli sister all the worse.

There are some interesting ideas here, like getting sucked into a tower defense game, and every single one of the multiple teams of heroes being an absolute dumbass, kludging together game system exploits, and Naofumi slowly learning not to hate, but the whole thing would have been vastly improved by cutting everything having to do with Melty and her family out of the story entirely.

Thing that annoys me about Overlord, is he doesn't really have to try that much. It's more about the crazy former NPCs doing their thing than Ainz trying to Ainz.

I have no idea, I never followed up and read the light novels but I would assume they gutted that piece of the plot in favor of a more tame execution.
