The Ritual is a pretty great Netflix exclusive, as is Hush. I think it also has The VVitch still?

And Cabin In The Woods is perfectly fine, but would have been better without the Whedon :smug: factor

I can see it sorta. If horror movies aren’t your thing, but you kinda like some here and there, Cabin kind of plays off as a big “catch all” with a slight jab at them. Also if you’re a big Whedonite or whatever they’re called, that would help.

I think people say it’s too hateful of horror but I don’t feel like it is, on a whole. It’s definitely making GBS threads on horror, but it feels specific rather than as a whole. 2009-2012 horror was kind of weak. Lots of lame zombie movies and the tail end of the torture porn garbage. Maybe some James Wan stuff thrown in. It felt kinda empty to me.

I feel like it’s been getting amazing as of late with A24’s offerings. So maybe the movie ended up on a meta level working considering the best horror films made today don’t really follow the classic formula but something weirder and different.
Maybe I’m wrong here since I don’t watch everything.

Do you prefer newer stuff or older stuff? What about foreign films?

Netflix has The Ritual, The Eyes of My Mother, The Void, As Above, So Below, and The Devil's Candy, just to name a few. Those are all lesser known horror movies from the past few years that you may have missed.

I recommend using JustWatch to browse - you can filter by service, genre, etc. Here is a list of all horror movies currently on Netflix for example:
https://www.justwatch.com/us/provider/netflix/movies?genres=hrr

Some on there that I personally liked a lot are The Ritual, Raw, Hush, Green Room, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Train to Busan, Creep/Creep 2, As Above So Below, Murder Party

On Netflix I'd recommend: The Ritual, Veronica, The Babadook, Cult of Chucky, Apostle, I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House, The VVitch, Krampus, Train to Busan, Dawn of the Dead (2004), Scream, Coraline, Monster House, Scream 2 and Let Me In.

I love me some foreign horror movies!

There was one which, if I don't misremember, was a Danish movie about this cute lady with short, boyish hair that hulks out when she puts a raincoat and it has a very Jekyll/Hyde thing going on. Can't for the life of me remember the name, and I immensely regret not jotting down the name of the movie. :(

OTOH, whoa, a lot of recs in no time! I wrote them all down and I think I'll be quite busy in my down time. Thanks! :)

Assuming you're talking about the bike jump scene, I bet that's even more effective today for someone who hasn't seen the movie because they'd be even more certain that Hemsworth wasn't going to die right there.

My biggest gripe with Cabin In The Woods is that the B plot of the behind-the-scenes bureaucracy of the facility and the engineers is way more interesting than the survivors plot, and every time it jumps back and forth it degrades the momentum.

Maybe more precisely it’s for people who thought horror was still in the post-80s slasher boom slump. I still enjoyed it for the monster mash aspect and I think the general idea is good, but I don’t super like the satire.

That scene's good and I appreciate the work of all the various special effects people who worked on each monster to give it a distinct look, but I don't think the entire rest of the movie is even mildly enjoyable so that sequence alone can't hold it up for me.

The biggest problem with the movie is that it thinks it's clever and funny, and it's neither, and that's really grating.

Joss Whedon has made a career of horror-adjacent work, but it’s very clear he doesn’t actually understand horror mechanically at all.

I really wanted to like Nightbreed more than I did, after knowing it only by reputation for a long time. I was way more into Cronenberg's thing than I was with the "city of monsters" concept. I wanted the whole movie to be about the interplay between the hero and his psychiatrist and none of the sympathetic monster stuff.
