My Favourite Thing is Monsters. It's a really cool graphic novel (tome) about... well, it's about a girl figuring out who killed her upstairs neighbour, but it's really about self-hate and self-respect. I think. The protagonist has literally drawn herself as a monster throughout, and is avoiding coming to terms with her sexuality. It's more fun than that makes it sound, but it does go to some really dark places.

It's set in Chicago in the late 60s, and it really sells that through the framing - the book is presented as a collection of the main character's sketchbooks, complete with lined paper (with holes punched!) and bits stuck in, copied magazine covers, etc.

It's giving me serious art-envy with how well it's done (and so much of it!), and I'm getting all 'but how could I ever do something that good, I must be poo poo'. Stoopid brain, shut up and enjoy the good art.

e: Just noticed it's 'volume one'. That's annoying, I hate stories that don't just finish. Ah well, nothing is perfect.

I'm sorry that happened to you and I'm sure it's 'cause the people don't understand you art 'cause their definition of what counts as good art has eroded over time to only hold certain kinds of things, even if those things are made by hacks who don't know shiiiiiit.

Come at me about art pieces that try to push the boundaries of what counts as art by placing literal trash in a gallery.

a hole-y ghost
May 10, 2010

ehhh getting into art shows all depends on who you know anyway so if you want to get into galleries and stuff like that just hang around gallery managers and curators as much as you can and figure out what they like to show, and figure out if you can/want to make that

e: like just think that people organizing art shows usually have way less resources ("art gallery" and "underfunded" basically go together as a given) than they need so they're just going to go with people they know they can trust, either personally or by reputation, and who they know to be reliable and able to deliver a show on time and all that. make it easy for them if you can

I'm hanging in a volunteer gallery! I got a free bike from the old guy that haunts there, last year i made $12 selling homemade dvds. Those dvds were like money in the bank! and I got a free beer, also, it's great. The old guy said he fell out of a third story window and died briefly. He's pretty cool. Anyway I recommend this because time spent volunteering or hanging somewhere like this will look good for your "status" as an artist, like a line of text you print on your resume to establish status, which is what those guys are looking for, and also it's a chill way to spend time.

I shouldn't whine. I have made it into these shows in the past - it is mostly colored pencil only shows. I just have to keep making art, keep submitting it and not get discouraged.

I wish I had more time to spend hanging around galleries, and other artists for that matter. I barely have time to make the art I get away with making as it is.

Yahoo's neural network that filters out NSFW images from search results was repurposed to generate NSFW images and the results are confusing but definitely pornographic: :nws:https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2016/10/porn-images-synthesised-by-yahoos-nsfw-neural-network-is-lovecraftian-erotica/:nws:

That's far more Geiger than I was expecting. I was expecting dicks aplenty, but I didn't think it'd match Geiger so perfectly! (And yet, with hindsight, why did I expect anything else?)

I love AI stuff like that, it's 'sufficiently advanced tech' to me.

e: Waaaaaait, is that the same NSFW-neural-net that's filtering Tumblr (owned by Yahoo) posts? Cos I call bullshit on that, that thing thinks everything is porn!

e2: Oh, that makes sense, actually! Tumblr trained its AI on 'what do tumblr users get off on' and it learnt that everything is porn, that kinda figures. :science:

Quick, get into the computer-generated-porn fetish now before it gets too crowded! Make your own computer-generated-porn-fanart by traditional means!

I think I read somewhere that Tumblr-bot isn't actually one of these learning algorithms, even though they said it would get better at its job. I think the explanation was that it will always compare a pic to the same set of parameters and call it done.
So far only 2 of my pics got flagged! This was one of them:

Yeah, the tumblr porn-flagging-bot is something different. Shittier than the yahoo NN, I believe. None of my nude sketches and life drawing studies got flagged, which I was both surprised and not surprised to find out.

FAKE EDIT: just logged in and found 9 life drawing posts flagged. I submitted them all for appeal since the guidelines clearly state that nudity in art or illustrations is permitted, guess we'll see how my drawn female-presenting nipples fare.

it's crap like this that makes me glad I don't draw naked people...then I realize the bot's dumb enough to flag safe images of characters during non sexual things.

The lead up is longer than last time, and I have approx 99.999% of my print stock left from the last time so life should be more relaxed. But I do want to add a couple more prints (maybe another hero piece), and I've been pumping out these 6"x6" drawings real quick so hopefully I'll have a bunch of those.

FWIW I appealed all 9 of my posts and they retracted the claims within 24 hours. It's still a really stupid policy and much less useful than, oh, I don't know, dealing with any of these other issues on their site: nazis, pornbots, serial harassers...

Like, any of the other complaints that have ever been leveled against Tumblr should have been higher priority than "using a bot to ban all nudity."
