FF2 is much better than its reputation suggests up until you reach the final gauntlet of dungeons, where it becomes even worse than its reputation suggests.

IMO, future charity streams should work through Rare Replay. Actually, factually 100% completing Perfect Dark alone is definitely a time-consuming ordeal.

I've been peaking at the stream archives and Harris' goal at the beginning was a measly 500$. If you drag the mouse along the play bar you can see the donation meter in the preview image fill up again and again as Harris readjusts the goals and the donations keep reaching them. It's very uplifting!

EDIT: And as a huge Final Fantasy fan I can say the second game is one of the most obnoxious JRPG experiences I've ever had.

If you're going to look for games with needlessly long 100% completion times I feel like JRPGs kind of go without saying.

According to How Long to Beat, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts has a longer average 100% completion time than Donkey Kong 64, coming in at a hefty 46 hours. It also regularly and openly expresses contempt for the player, so it earns some extra points on the misery scale.

Dragon Quest 7 was kind of similar in that they both seem to put way too much effort into feeling "big" and having long playtimes due to being their franchises big entry into the console generation.

Dragon Quest games, 2 onwards, have always been grindy as hell though, with loooooooong playtimes.

Like, Dragon Quest VI (admittedly somewhere in the middle of the pack as far as the quality of the game goes) even had it built into the game's mechanic, where you could level up the conventional way of battling monsters and gaining experience, but once "professions" were introduced, you'd also have to become increasingly proficient at that (each job had its own levelling system, where you'd be granted a title) - and that could only be achieved by defeating monsters with a higher level than your character, or diving into the ocean and fighting monsters there. Once you'd completed the tier 1 professions, certain combinations would unlock the tier 2 professions (so Warrior + Fighter would unlock BATTLE MASTER) and once you'd completed 4 specific ones of those, you could then make each character a Hero. That's not to mention the 2 hidden ones, one of which could only be unlocked when you'd beaten the game once.

One thing I realized playing dq games is to be judicious about upgrading equipment. Grinding for 15 minutes to get a +1 defense seems like a colossal waste of time, for example. If you upgrade all your stuff immediately to the max a town offers, then you grind.

I also count the casino as grinding but at least the rewards are usually endgame stuff.

They are but to be honest I never bother with casinos. I think people remember grinding a lot as if your bad at the game grinding is a way to brute force it. When I was a kid I did that for DQ 8 but replaying it as an adult and understanding the system better I never grinded at all.

DQ2 is a standout in how grindy it is (mostly due to being about 50% un-playtested, and it'd be hard to say that many games didn't learn the wrong lessons from it), but I don't think that's really true for the series as a whole. DQ4, 5, and 11 at least don't really require any grind and I've heard (haven't played it) that 8 is similar. I think that Messr. GrandpaPants has it--the marginal gear improvements available from town to town are a carrot to encourage players who are having trouble manipulating the battle system. If you grind enough to get the money to buy it all, your level will be high enough to power through combat, but when you understand the system (aggressively use buffs and debuffs, mostly, but a lot of enemies are vulnerable to status effects) you don't often need to go out of your way to brute-force things.

I'm no speedrunner, but the last time I played DW4 it took me like 12-13 hours to beat it, with no metal farming. The record is around 6:30:00.

The classic Spyro and Crash don't suffer from collectible-overload like DK64, but games 2 and 3 of both characters have a lot of minigames that can grind one's teeth given how unrelated they are to the core gameplay and how success is dependent on outside chance. Half the levels of Crash 3 aren't even platformers and you have to come first in a drat race to progress!

So Donkey Kong 64 is a game with good core gameplay that suffers from being too big, too much of the content consisting of menial interactions with the game world, and feeling unfinished.

It is clear then that the only true spiritual successor to Donkey Kong 64 is Metal Gear Solid 5.

There are a few questionable design decisions that artificially inflate the length of the game. For example, many (perhaps most) of the Kong-specific bananas should have been replaced with bananas that anyone can pick up. If a banana is sitting on the ground in a place where any Kong can easily get to it, there’s no reason why the player should be forced to switch to Diddy or Lanky or whoever.
