That movie is an irredeemable piece of poo poo. Not because of the violence but rather because it's so tedious and boring. And aesthetically it's bland as gently caress. If you're going to make a Cannibal Holocaust rip off 30 years too late at least have it be interesting. There's so many things you could do with it and he just doesn't because he's too busy masturbating to his own edgy childhood. The movie itself has all the aesthetic flair of a lifetime movie. What a pile of poo poo.

It's not even scary due to how badly shot it is as well. I know I'm not the only one that was laughing when the goreporn started.

Post production 3d has gotten better but it wasn't great in Bladerunner 2049. One or two scenes looked kind of cool but as someone that watches too much 3d movies I wouldn't recommend it unless you get a good deal.

Off the top of my head a movie that looked good with post-production 3d was Thor Ragnarock.

Eli Roth is a hack and his only good movie is Cabin Fever. He's one of those directors who is just obsessed with the VHS schlock he liked as a kid and wants to forever make "edgy" poo poo in that mold. Even Cabin Fever isn't very original.

Agreed for the most part. I do think his Hostel films are good commentaries on late capitalism. That poo poo probably happens in one form or another IRL, too.

I was thinking about it recently and I realized that the horror films of the Bush years are all based around brutality and hopelessness. A lot of them are pretty bad but they often have this vibe that captures the horror and terrible absurdity of the things that were going on at the time. They're very mean spirited.

I find it boring and juvenile. The way it is indicative of the world at the time is more interesting than most of the actual movies.

I saw it in 3D at my local (real) IMAX and thought it was amazing. Not necessarily down to the 3D effect but just the combination of print and projection.

I know this isn’t the recommended way to see it by the cinematographer, but I was pretty blown away. Haven’t watched the UHD version on my 65” OLED because I just can’t see how it can live up to how I originally saw it. My eyes were just scanning every frame for detail.

Solid film, wasn’t 100% sure about it at first but when they eliminated the podcasters who were just there to bring new people up to speed, it got super good. A worse film would’ve just kept them around and tried to keep them relevant.

It says it's got 34 movies in it, all stored and presented brilliantly in a plastic binder. The main list is in Chinese, so here's what's printed on the discs:

Psycho
Rear Window
Rebecca
Suspicion
39 Stuffen (The Thirty-Nine Steps)
Hitchcock (That's all it says on the disc, but putting it into my PC, it's Notorious)
Secret Agent
Spellbound
Stage Fright
"I Confess"!
The Man Who Knew Too Much (with Jimmy Stewart on the disc art)
Dial M For Murder
The Trouble With Harry
The Wrong Man
The Man Who Knew Too Much (with not Jimmy Stewart on the disc art, so I assume the 30's version)
Rich and Strange and The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Saboteur
The Birds
North by Northwest
The Paradine Case
Young and Innocent
To Catch a Thief
Sabotage
Jamaica Inn
The Skin Game
Marnie
Foreign Correspondant
Murder
Lifeboat
The Lady Vanishes
Rope
Shadow of a Doubt
Vertigo
Strangers on a Train

That's actually a pretty decent spread. Here's how Notorious looks after loving restoration and disc authoring, gently caress the Criterion edition:

It's great. I originally found the velvet covered Universal DVD set in the piles for $20, but when I saw this I had to swap it out. I'm eventually going to own all the Criterion copies of his films, but this is a nice middle ground, even if the subtitles are a bit...off. Rebecca's subs constantly refer to a Relecca, which is actually kinda great.

Goodfellas UHD got a 1/5 picture quality from blu-ray.com, curious what you think of it

I decided that my strategy of minimally buying UHDs was self defeating and cheap since I have this fancy rear end OLED TV that’s currently like the best thing you can buy... so I picked up The Matrix, Saving Private Ryan, and Blade Runner on Friday.

The Matrix had a lot of subtle grain. Not in an unpleasant way; it’s a gentle reminder that the movie was most definitely shot on film. The color was once again the highlight. The murky interiors of the ship have these super stark lights inside that are very impressive. I also noticed that the green matrix/blue real world color grading is much more subtle than when I last saw it on BR.

Saving Private Ryan on the other hand is more of a showcase for texture over color since it’s mainly muted and fairly drab. All the dust and crud everywhere is extremely impressive especially on closeups of people.

I mainly got Goodfellas because I've been wanting to rewatch it, but hesitant with a better version.

I'm really thinking I need to do some research on setting up my display since 4K tends to look odd no matter what. Might just be my TV, though.

So, I did some research and finally got my settings down on my Samsung 4K display. Blu-rays look fantastic (especially since I'm seeing a lot of B&W lately going through Bergman), but I did a quick check on 2001 and Goodfellas again.

Goodfellas looks fantastic to my eyes, but it's definitely darker and higher contrast than the Blu-ray. In a good way. It has sort of a smoky appearance in darker scenes, but brighter daytime scenes really pop. I guess it's more due to it being a new 4K master (the previous transfer was done way back in 2004).

2001 needed to be brought down a notch or two in brightness, though only because I had just seen the IMAX screening, so I had a vague idea of where it should be set.

My display only does regular HDR 10, not Dolby Vision. Maybe I'll upgrade in a year or two, but I wouldn't give this up if just for the fact it has 3-D.

Just wanted to say that Warner Archive's podcast is fantastic. They go over every round of new announcements and really do a damned fine job of selling you on lesser-known stuff.

Also, Kino confirmed they are releasing some 30s Gary Cooper films including Lives of a Bengal Lancer and Beau Geste (new 4K restoration), as well as Rouben Mamoulian's Love Me Tonight. They also announced the version of The Iceman Cometh starring Lee Marvin for March and will include both the 4-hour director's cut and 3-hour theatrical cut from new 2K restorations.
