I assume speaker appointments are exactly what they sound like, but what is a seniority appointment to a committee? Like you were on the committee last session and had enough seniority to merit staying on?

Section 2. Determination of Membership — (a) Membership on the
standing committees shall be determined at the beginning of each regular
session in the following manner:
(1) For each standing substantive committee, a maximum of one-half
of the membership, exclusive of the chair and vice-chair, shall be determined by
seniority. The remaining membership of the committee shall be appointed by
the speaker.
(2) Each member of the house, in order of seniority, may designate
three committees on which he or she desires to serve, listed in order of
preference. The member is entitled to become a member of the committee of
his or her highest preference on which there remains a vacant seniority position.

Seniority, as the term is used in this subsection, shall mean years of cumulative
service as a member of the house of representatives.

To stick it to freedom caucus and Dan Patrick, and to show good faith to Democrats for the session. Everything has to pass out of the house and senate and then to the governor so its not like Republicans lost control of those checks. And a Republican is chairman of scheduling the votes for Bills in the house.

I know that we're all irony poisoned cynics who only care about who can sneer the most at government but at the state level, at least, lawmakers believe in some level of compromise and bipartisanship. Dan Patrick and the Freedom Caucus were anomalous in that regard, as relates to statehouse traditions. Lots of government business gets done based on personal relationships and traditions and gentlemen's agreements and the loss of that at the federal level is one reason why Washington is utterly dysfunctional.

A lot of newspapers have loving bizarre rules about what they do and don't publish. In this case they'd say they technically didn't publish her name because they have a policy against it or something.

I've worked at papers where they'll talk about cases involving, say, a teacher sleeping with a student, and the story will point out it's against policy to name victims in sex crimes but then name the victim's parents.

Anyway, the Gov, Lt. Gov and Speaker were adamant about pushing property tax reform of the type Seliger opposed when he wasn’t being personally lied about and insulted in public by the Lt. Gov so don't see that happening (in the regular anyway the tactic the GOP used before they lowered the threshold from 2/3s to 3/5ths was to say the supermajority rule doesn’t count in the special and pass poo poo then. That's how we got voter ID, I'd expect it again if Dems + Seliger block prop. tax cuts during the regular)
