We could go back to talking about Warcraft! They're releasing entire coffee-table books to retcon the lore into a deeper mess of kudzu than it was ~and~ the story team seems to wanna violently retcon one of the main factions back to their original rawr rawr evil races depiction despite absolutely everything built up.

Yeah, the plan is Friday afternoon/evening, which gives the die hards a chance to get well ahead before the stream.

I haven't watched any recaps. What I know is purely the absolute bare surface elements from cultural osmosis. I'll admit that a good bit of the blind playthrough is, in fact, to poke fun at the people who insist that you need to play every game because the series is so convoluted. I've played into the faux confusion angle a bit as performance, but at the end of the day it's a mainstream JRPG pastiche: no matter how convoluted the lore gets it's going to be a really straightforward story about friendship and triumph over evil, and unless they seriously bungle the writing it's not actually going to be that hard to keep up.

Apparently they were famously assholes when they were on Loveline, though in hindsight it's hard to know if they were being serious or just loving with them. On that note, at this point Todd should just include "listen to relevant Loveline episode" on the list of things he does when covering a one hit wonder from the late 90s/early 00s.

There is a huge difference between KH and Warcraft. I can hope that at least the mainline KH games will deliver convoluted melodrama I can enjoy unironically. The best I can hope for from Warcraft's convoluted melodrama is being unintentional comedy.

It amazes me the number of people that have come out of the woodwork these past few weeks trying to tell Kingdom Hearts fans that, ACTUALLY, their favorite game series is dumb and makes no sense, as if every Kingdom Hearts fan isn't already aware of that. I have never met a KH fan who hasn't enjoyed the series' story in a so-bad-its-good way, punctuated with the moments of legitimate enjoyment despite itself.

I assumed it was mostly KH fans going, "Oh yeah, I'd forgotten how insane this was for a while! HEY EVERYONE LOOK AT THIS lovely THING I LOVE!"

At least in Super Robot Wars they attempt to mash in the separate IPs together in a way that they make sense in the game's universe. In the old days that wasn't too hard, just say that Mazinger Z and Getter Robo occur in the same time period as Mobile Suit Gundam instead of the 1970s, and maybe time squish Gundam 0079, Z, ZZ, and CCA into a shorter time frame. The later games get kind of weird about it but that's mostly because more recent mecha shows dive into weird time/space/dimensional nonsense anyway, but even those don't have elaborate backstories that interfere with one another.

Super Robot Wars Z went about this the best way by going "we have Orguss, just use Orguss's bullshit to mash all the disparate universes together"

Their later material was much more mature and interesting, if a bit mellower. Pike St/Park Slope, Wine Women and Song, Cream and Bastards Rise...good stuff.

Sadly the bass player died during Death Year 2016. He had also been The Stranger's art director.

The SRW OG games are apparently kind of a mess at this point on account of trying to tie decades of mainline protagonist stories into a single coherent independent setting on top of their own writing issues.

A Wolfenstein: The New Colossus video

An American McGee's Alice video

A Far Cry 5 DLC video

And a Dead Space Retrospective

He also, excitingly, plans to do another travel video on a 45 day Fallout road trip, visiting locations from Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas.

I'm almost kind of wtfing at this because for the length and quality of videos he puts out, once every two months-ish doesn't even seem like a "lack of output" to me.

And that's not even going into the fact that Project X Zone and other stuff also happened.

My beef with Kingdom Hearts is that it doesn't go to the cooler Disney worlds and doesn't do much with most of the worlds it does go to.

Like there's no Tale Spin world? There's a gigantic undeveloped Art Deco Dieselpunk City set in a fortified canyon/sea cape with air pirates and a big cast of very distinct bad guys and you DON'T use it?

I guess they're doing more with Thebes this time around.

You joke, but TaleSpin as a property actually has some serious legal issues surrounding it because of the use of King Louie iirc.

Besides, the real tragedy is no Duck Tales world. :colbert:

Didn't know that. I was kinda serious though- it's a very cool property and one of the better original worlds they made.

And yeah, no Duckberg or the city from Darkwing Duck either. Those seem like obvious layups.

I can tune a fish.
I think a key distinction for me is that while I don't actively dump on KH in the first place, I still harbor a grudge for how immediately off the rails it went going from 1 to 2. And while some of the plot twists and such mentioned itt sound digestible out of context, I feel like a number of them are actually a real pain in the rear end to piece together over the course of some long action RPGs. Plus a handful really feel like they just exist to make things more confusing rather than actually add anything to the plot. And that's before you take into account how large swaths of the story operate entirely through anime melodrama.

Basically I like 1, parts of 2, and then care about literally nothing else.

The video title is a straight copy from HBomb's stuff, but the video style is... sorta like Jenny's but infinitely worse (and that's before you get to the garbage filters, which just drag it down even more). I dunno about the delivery of any points in the video because I didn't really pay enough attention or watch enough to say for sure.

I skipped around to a bit where they said that President Abe was the son of the "Manchurian Butcher", which was immediately retconned in video with a voice-over to just being classmates instead of, I don't know, edited out entirely or properly researched ahead of time.

like one.

For Kingdom Hearts, I've become a fan of Kingdom Smarts, a podcast where series fan Shannon Manor (professional character designer and illustrator) has 30 minutes to explain as much of the series as she can to Jake Mason (a very prolific podcaster and podcast editor), who knows nothing about the series but what Shannon tells him and what she allows him to see. It's mostly a beat-by-beat recap of the series, but Shannon is clearly passionate about the series and Jake gets into it, and there's a point where Jake has to admit that he was mad in real life at a cartoon duck. It's pretty good.
