lol that was right about this time last year just looked it up and the ntsb says that he'd set the "traffic-aware cruise control" to 75mph and so that he was doing 71 in a 65 when the crash happened, and that it had decided to accelerate up from 62mph in the seconds leading up to it, the whole time without his hands on the wheel

What's the viable temp range issue solution like for other brands, such as the ones going hard in Europe and Scandinavia? I know they've got built-in heaters, but doesn't the reduced range still ruin the energy/cost calculus?

But then, the point of electric cars was never actually to reduce energy consumption or cost, it's just very neatly obsfucated

Tesla CFO, who resigned as CFO in 2015, has announced he has resigned as CFOquote:A former Tesla employee said Musk ignored Kirkhorn's prudent financial advice at least once. The CEO wanted to allocate some $7 million to an automation project at the company's plant in Fremont, California. Once Musk forgot about the appealing new equipment, which Kirkhorn had viewed as nonessential, the funds were used to cover overages on other projects already under way. otoh every person in the world driving an electric car is largely as unsustainable as everyone driving an ice car, so, yeah, there is a point there
|
# ? Jan 31, 2019 18:45 |

another thing though is that if everyone abandoned ICE cars and switched to plug in electrics, you’ve then reduced the number of problems you need to solve re. air pollution generation. i know there’s other factors to be considered when it comes to battery manufacturing and whatnot, but it does simplify the emissions issue.

if pg&e is any indication if everyone did that there'd be a lot more forest fires

like i said, there are other things to consider, but generally speaking consolidating a bunch of tailpipe emission points to a central generator would be a step in the right direction. I’m just trying to make a simple point.

jit bull transpile posted:u know generating electricity for everyone from a single plant is way less polluty than having a million tiny less efficient plants rolling around making their own power rite That's a completely different problem. I wasn't talkin' bout pollution, I was talking about cost savings. You really don't have energy cost savings in the long term unless you happen to have access to cheap, reliable electricity and no significant amount gets wasted by the car doing things other than, you know, driving. Zero emissions cars are a great thing compared to having a million points of pollution, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking our actual total energy consumption is going down significantly by switching from one wasteful form of personal transport to another. Want to really reduce automobile power use? Make the cost of personal vehicle operation match its societal costs through taxing, tolling, etc.

you know i realized today that a (non-tesla) electric car would probably make a great patrol vehicle since it could sit around for long periods of time doing nothing, then immediately go from that to rapid acceleration to intercept someone speeding

Shame Boy posted:yeah that's why i specified "non-tesla" lmao It's true even for a competently designed electric car. The amount of energy you'd need to make continuous near-full-torque, off-the-line starts would generally overheat the batteries unless the cooling system was sized for close to the motor's inrush current, which, for any sane mass-market electric car, it would not be Gotta admit custom-made speeders for that purpose would be very cool, though
