I don;t know the region encoding on those but this is cheaper than any of them.Good luck: https://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-NEON-D...bnFfU:rk:1:pf:0 edit 2: The European blu-rays are all region 2. Some recommendations from Kino's sale: Barton Fink - Great film, transfer isn't perfect, but miles better than the DVD Black Sabbath - Mario Bava and Boris Karloff, enough said. The Covered Wagon - Fun early-20s silent epic, great print/score. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum - I love Richard Lester's 60s work and this is just a fun movie, if just for the cast. The Atomic Cafe - Brilliant found-footage documentary Old Ironsides - Another great James Cruze epic from the 20s (though, ghost directed by Dorothy Arzner) I'm definitely picking up The Atomic Cafe - I should be able to find a few others.

Ended up ordering The Atomic Cafe, The Woman in the Window, The Spiral Staircase, Marty, Inherit the Wind, Duel in the Sun, and Trigger, Jr. All blind buys except for The Atomic Cafe and Marty, but I've wanted to see more noirs, and the rest sound interesting. I've never seen a Roy Rogers film, so why not one in Trucolor?

Kino just announced Ridley Scott's Hannibal for blu-ray and UHD, which makes it their first title to be released on UHD.

Ridley's got a nice selection of his work available on UHD now, it's pretty great. Blade Runner, Gladiator, Prometheus, Alien Covenant, Black Hawk Down coming up later this year, now Hannibal. Hopefully they'll get around to Kingdom of Heaven eventually.

All the old editions look like various degrees of garbage. This movie deserves much better; I think it's an under-rated bit of grand guignol.

Yeah, recast Hannibal Lecter so it’s just another adaptation of one of the books and not a sequel to a different sort of movie and I think it gets a better reception. Not that Anthony Hopkins himself is a negative, though.

It's also totally gorgeous. I guess this kind of puts the argument I had of UHD requiring a viable release for boutique labels. Especially as they're doing a double UHD/Blu and standalone Blu release.

I picked up Blade Runner on UHD the other week and finally checked it out on Sunday. What a gorgeous picture. Just stunning how good it looks. So Alien will be a day 1 for me w hopes of an equally good treatment.

Casimir Radon posted:I've never actually sat through Hannibal. Is it any good or is it just edgy try hard poo poo? I practically hated it the first time I saw it - partly because I viewed it as a sequel to Lambs. But, like Sir Kodiak says, if you can ignore Lambs, Hannibal works well on its own. It's a very, very different kind of film. Now I love it and find it more enjoyable than Lambs. Mind you, I'd read and loved Lambs before I saw the film, and both Starling and Lecter looked totally different in my mind, so I found Foster and Hopkins to be completely miscast - especially Hopkins. I think Lambs is a decent film, but for me it can never live up to the book. On the other hand, I find Hopkins' over the top acting suits Hannibal much better - and I never cared much for the book anyway.

Do you guys have opinions on what are the best Blu/DVD/Game shelving solutions nowadays? I've been using this for years but I don't love it... it's awkward, no longer big enough, and doesn't match my new place's design

zenintrude posted:Do you guys have opinions on what are the best Blu/DVD/Game shelving solutions nowadays? I think the Ikea Billy is still the most flexible. IkeaHacks also had a good idea for double layering bluray cases on there with a small riser, which is what I'm planning on doing when I next move. I've currently got the precursor to the current Kallax which are record shelves, but they're chunky and not very effective, space wise. Otherwise I guess just get a binder (e: loving poo poo refresh before replying so you don't get punked on this joke)

I'm coming to the end of my existing shelf space for blu rays and it's actually been good motivation to not just buy a new one every time I have the impulse. I have one full size Ikea shelf and then a smaller one about half the size that I'm using for UHDs, and I think that's really all the space I want to dedicate in my place to movies. So my philosophy going forward is gonna be to force myself to make decisions about which movies I really need to have on a shelf, versus maybe some that I can just throw into a plastic tub in my closet because either A. I regret buying it because I don't ever see myself watching it again(pretty rare). B. I may or may not want to watch it again but it's one of those basic plastic blu cases and I really don't care too much about keeping it in good condition(very common in my collection). So eventually my collection that's on display will be 90% Criterion, nicer box sets and collectors editions, and then UHDs. At least that's the plan.

I mean, I don't have the sort of collection that would require those sorts of shelves, but I keep all my Blu-rays in a big record cabinet. Unless you're an uber-dork who just has to see all those spines staring back at them 24/7, there's no need to have them out in the open. Get something with doors or drawers and you get an attractive solution with just a few seconds of extra effort when you go to grab a Blu.

Was it this thread that had the poster who hung up movie posters right at the roof-wall join? That might be the only thing more offensive than binders. Also Suspiria has new US cover art instead of the poster art, and I'm kinda bummed. It's not a bad cover, at least, but I really dug the poster aesthetic.
