quote:

I was twenty seven years old when the Great Impetus descended upon me.

It was terrifying and beautiful, and in an instant, in only a word, it conveyed unto me the dimensions of all that is and all that must be.

I am its chosen servant, and only I know its design, but through me, you may endeavor to amplify its brilliance.

Find me, and find shelter from the storm. Live with us, and find meaning.

The flyer is one of many stapled to a bulletin board outside a crumbling diner off of a seldom-used Florida state route. It is somewhat worse for wear having stood through the rigors of a particularly wet summer, but as the first major hurricane of 1997 approaches, the flyer seems not long for this world.

The traveler spits in the dirt and consults his map. The diner is boarded up and left to God's protection, and given his own history with the police, a forced entry seems imprudent. He'd stopped for the antique pump to the side of the restaurant, more out of desperation than anything, and saw to little surprise that it was merely decorative. In any case, while his mad dash to the northwest had put distance between himself and Miami, it hadn't afforded him any sort of protection from the imminent storm. He is running out of options.

The young man kicks at the dirt as he walks back toward his car, drumming his fingers against his hip and betraying his own growing anxiety. He notices the bulletin board, and approaches it. With any luck, he'd find an advertisement for a solid motel nearby, barter for a room for the length of the storm, and turn further northward the next day in one piece.

Just as in Miami, the traveler has no luck. The board is a monument to dozens of lost cats and dogs, those likely to be consumed by the wind and rain if they'd even made it this long. There is, however, the flyer, and a tab with an address not two miles from the diner.

quote:

Find me, and find shelter from the storm.

It will have to do.

As the traveler turns onto the dirt path leading into the field, the rain arrives in a deluge. The wind rocks the car, and the traveler strains to see anything through the torrent battering his windshield. In time, he does see a small concrete building resembling a utility shed, with a pickup truck parked haphazardly next to it. The aluminum door flies victim to the wind, banging back and forth under a uniformally stenciled CONGREGATION IN WITNESS OF THE GREAT IMPETUS. In a flash, the traveler bounds inside, and with some difficulty succeeds in the herculean task of latching the door shut. As his eyes adjust to the darkness, he begins to doubt.

"This is a church?"

He pulls out his lighter, and with a deft flick of his fingers illuminates his newfound haven. Before him, stairs extend downward.

After a moment of hesitation, the traveler descends.

I'd been happy, and I was happy still. For all to be accomplished,
for me to feel less lonely,
all that remained to hope
was that on the day of my execution
there should be a huge crowd of spectators and that they should
greet me with howls of execration.

Or you know, make some terrible arguments and lose the game for town. Either one works for me.

Fear is the glue that holds society together. It's what makes people suppress their worst impulses. Fear is power.

And at the end of fear, oblivion.
