Ok, this is an A+ reccomendation from me. I love this isekai manga/light novel.

https://sekaigamethetranslation.wordpress.com/volume-1/

The light novel is pretty great as well.

The premise is that the game the protagonist gets isekaied to is the first vrpg on the market, and has a devoted fan community. It was originally planned to be a vrmmo, but it was cut back in development. Unfortunately, the game has an infamous skyrim-esque reputation of being buggy as hell even after all the patches.

The protagonist uses all these bugs and developer oversights to powerlevel and exploit combat in a manner not unlike a speedrunner.

You know that exploit in skyrim where the person guiding you through the helgen escape won't die or react to being attacked by the player, so you can grind attack skills on them freely? The protagonist uses the same concept, except he is whacking a high level torch at the entrance to the postgame dungeon. The postgame dungeon itself is sealed, but the entrance is merely buried under dirt in the fields outside the starting city.

At the end of nearly every chapter is a series of excerpts from the fanwiki, which act as a framing device for just how shoddy the game is under the graphics.

Here are just some of the excerpts:

quote:

Q: I just can’t seem to kill the Red Mushrooms in the Forest of Beginnings! Is this a bug?
A: It’s a bug. We believe that the staff accidentally put an extra zero in its defense stat. If you encounter one, either run away or defeat it with magic.

Q: I obtained a sword named the Silver Knight’s Sword, but when I equip it I lose the ability to use sword skills. Is this a bug?
A: It’s a bug. The Silver Knight’s Sword is a sword no matter how you look at it, but it’s classified as an axe. Either equip a different weapon, or take this opportunity to switch to being an axe-wielder.

Q: In the middle of my quest, an NPC that was supposed to be dead appeared! Is this a bug?
A: It’s a common bug in Nekomimineko. While wishing them well in the afterlife, let’s burn their final valiant appearance in our minds. That said, as it increases the possibility of unrecoverable problems, please try to refrain from killing NPCs as much as possible.

Bloody Stab (Skill)
Dark element dagger skill. Famous suicide skill.
For some reason, this skill’s effect range always overlaps with your character’s hitbox, so players with high attack will instantly die upon using this skill. Still, skills that can target oneself are valuable, so there are people who make use of this.

Q: I put in a lot of effort killing Wild Silver Zlimes since I was told by NPCs that they gave a lot of EXP, but I’m not leveling up at all. Is this a bug?
A: It’s a bug. Due to a mistake, the experience granted by Wild Silver Zlimes and Berserk Rabbits were switched. Go search for and hunt Berserk Rabbits instead.

Q: The healer in my party is not leveling up at all. Is this a bug?
A: It… would be great if it was a bug, but that’s just how the game is. In this game, no matter how many times one casts healing magic, one would receive no experience. Either try to find a new, higher leveled healer, or try your best to let them deal the final blow.

Q: The healer in my party leveled up, but their recovery magic did not become any stronger. Is this a bug?
A: It’s… not a bug, but how the system works. When leveling the healer, if they dealt the final blow with a physical attack, then even if their class is a healer, their physical statuses will be the ones to increase. Either try to deal the final blow with magic, or give up and treat healers as consumable items.

Q: A certain magician joined our party, but doesn’t listen to commands and goes berserk, and even burns other party members with offensive magic. Is this a bug?
A: The existence of that character is something like a bug.

There is so much more awful openworld rpg goodness.

quote:

King Butcher (Monster)
The boss monster of the dungeon Giants’ Cave which contains monsters averaging around level 165, and everyone’s trauma machine. While it has been fixed with a patch, the Great Mincemeat Festival bug, where a mistake in the monster spawn table settings caused a large number of Butchers to appear in the Deus Plains, had been extremely famous. On the other hand, it has also been called a Meat Carnival by those who exploited the bug to mass hunt Butchers.

Six Split Petals (Quest)
This is a battle royale for the stamps of the six families by their representatives. You become the representative for the family you choose, and need to defeat the representatives from the remaining five families in order to collect all of the stamps.
This will be a tough fight against various kinds of specialists, you think, but actually, since it is possible to accept the request from multiple families at once, you just need to become the representative for all six families to collect all of the stamps without a single fight.

Q: I walked through a wall somewhere in the capital. Is this a bug?
A: It’s a bug. In Nekomimineko there are sometimes objects that were mistakenly not marked as obstacles. Since the AI identifies these as walls, they are very useful for losing enemies. You should proactively run through them! #iminarock

Q: A monster with 0 HP attacked me. Is this a bug?
A: It’s a bug. For some reason, when a monster dies in Nekomimineko, the action that it was performing before it died does not get cancelled. It is important to be on your guard until its body disappears completely, but in the chance that you do get hit, try shouting out “Impossible, you should be dead already!” or “Is this… a phantom!”. You will surely find it quite entertaining.

Q: In the quest <Rendezvous Under the Moonlight>, Jennifer doesn’t show up at the beach no matter how long I wait. Is this a bug?
A: It’s a bug. Depending on where the event was initiated, Jennifer may get caught in places such as in the gaps between buildings. The chance that she’s stuck somewhere is high, so please go and fetch her. It is quite amusing when the two of you reach the beach and she brazenly asks “Sorry, did you wait long?”, even after having escorted her every step of the way.

Rainbow Rain (Magic)
With an astonishing seven elemental types, it is one of the ultimate offensive magic spells.
With so many elemental types, it is sure to hit any monster’s weaknesses… but due to Nekomimineko’s system, if the monster is immune to any of the elemental types the final damage becomes zero, so it was rare to do any damage with it past mid game.
Has a very flashy effect. One of the four kings of lag.

Earth Grave (Magic)
Summons stone spears from the ground. Intermediate earth element spell.
Or it was supposed to be, but due to a mistake in the configuration it was treated as a physical attack. Extremely useful in the end game when enemies have many resistances. Magicians’ last hope. (Fixed in version 1.10)
All hope is dead.

Literally the reason the game is called "nekomimineko" by the playerbase, no joke, is that there is a samurai catgirl npc+associated questlines that quickly made apparent that the devs spent far too much time working on functional cat ears for this npc.

There is an npc called Ina Traille that is called 'train girl' by the playerbase. Her only function is to lure a huge pack of powerful monsters straight to the player if they start grinding in the plains outside the starting city. She can somehow outrun the monsters... until she reaches the player and begs for their help, inevitably killing them both.

The protagonist uses his knowledge of combat exploits and late-game gear hidden in the starting city to defeat the monster horde and takes her on as a sidekick/apprentice for the first volume.

Anyways, Idr a story about a salary man who has the power of importing goods via a merchanting ability who befriends a werewolf creature who follows him around for meals. Together they go hunting and sell all the monster parts for gold and here's is when I forgot the title. It had nice art and part cooking manga too.

I don't think it's been mentioned here yet but Middle-Aged Man's VRMMO Activity Log is a decent one, or at least one that dodges most of the problematic pitfalls others dive into. It's an older dude who just wants to largely chill out and solo in this VRMMO that has advanced AI NPCs that basically treat it as their real world, which I think, if the author chooses to(and has hinted at a few times), could really get into the ethical implications of creating a world and thinking creatures in it. It occasionally has cut away to the company who actually runs the VRMMO and them discussing the development of the AI characters. But mostly it's the main character, whose in-game name is Earth, and his journey to craft stuff and cook food. He's "overpowered" but only in an MMO sense, I.E. when a new area/expansion is released, he's booted back down the power tiers quite a bit, similar to how most MMOs do it. Hell, it constantly throws harem applicants at him and he deftly dodges them all the time. It occasionally has real bad translations but for the most part is pretty legible even at its worst.

why does she keep refering to male love interests as capture targets

is this how women think

In Japanese the word 攻略(Kouryaku) is used when talking about "clearing/beating/winning" a game, but it's original meaning is to capture or assault enemy territory.

You might 攻略 a game, or a dungeon in an RPG, but in a dating/otome game set up you 攻略 the routes of characters, with potential love interests being referred to as 攻略対象, "capture targets".

It's a direct translation in a case that would be better served with a more localized interpretation of what's meant, like "datable characters" or "romance options/targets", but fan translations have a tendency to treat non-literal translations like the plague and are more open to terminology that non-insiders don't understand.

The light novel is pretty great as well.

Good to see sekai game getting some love, it's one of my favorites and is hilarious, especially if you're a fan of bethesda games or RTA/TAS style tricks.

The only bad things about it I can remember is that eventually it gets a little repetitive with the gimmick where there's a big looming problem that everyone is worried about but then the MC reveals he was never worried at all because of a bug that deus ex machina's it away. It's a good gimmick, but it gets overused a bit. It's been a while since I read it, but IIRC the ending also just kind of petered out as well, like the author ran out of ideas.

Recently I've been reading a new novel in kind of the same vein about a girl that dies and turns into a ghost but discovers she can possess her VRMMO headset and log into the game and keep playing after death. It's a bit similar in that the game is buggy and unbalanced as hell, though not to the same extent as nekomimineko. I dunno if it has an english translation yet.

Here's another one :

THE NEW GATE
https://mangadex.org/title/13800/the-new-gate
The MC is stuck in a VR Death Game, and completes it freeing everyone who's trapped. However instead of returning to his original world, he wakes up to find that 500 years have passed and he's now in the game world but for real now.

Has a couple interesting twists, but mostly its the usual MC Power Fantasy where he's trying not to be noticed while doing absurdly OP things and attracting plenty of women to his side, that sort of thing. I got a bit bored with it after a while but it's inoffensive enough that there may be people who'd be into it here.

The fan translation is actually pretty decent, certainly better than the synopsis above. Feel free to skip the prologue chapters if they get too dark, they just go over the events in the synopsis with a little more detail and don't match most of the tone going forward. (There's occasionally scumbags. They get their just desserts, unless it's the main antagonists, but even they get their metaphorical nose bloodied. Repeatedly.)

It's not quite that bad. I'd honestly forgotten there was a party wiped out there until it was mentioned in this thread. It's not exactly commendable, but they're gone like two pages after they're introduced, unlike Goblin Slayer, which revels in introducing and developing each character before getting rid of them. It's not good writing, but it's not really cruel about it in particular.

Yeah, like the others said it's not a major thing. The dead characters don't even get names. It's more a setup for the current situation in the area. One, stronger monsters are more likely to be commanding groups of normally weak monsters, (The party would have been fine if a dragon hadn't shown up.) and two, some new adventurers haven't adjusted or are rushing into things and aren't taking precautions against more dangerous enemies when going after weaker ones.

As with any medium where something's done over time and there little refining done after the fact, the start's kinda rough. Once the fully Shirley chapters get going (chapter 3, not counting the prologues), it settles in to the tone of things going forward.

probably important to keep in mind that CyberConnect was originally helping with development of the FFVII remake, which means they were basically held up by that up until they were dropped because Square can't manage a drat thing these days, and almost immediately after the news came out that CC were dropped they announced all this poo poo.

Yeah it wasn't G. Slayer bad, but stuff like that still bothers me a lot on the sheer principle. Like they were put there just to get maimed. My thoughts on Fridnging in general have been soured a LOT over the several years that even instances of nameless characters bothers me.

Sword Art Online is kind of an odd duck in that when it's good, it's quite good, and when it's bad it's amazingly awful.

Personally I didn't like that the first arc basically skipped over anything like world building and was just "Kirito is awesome and gets all the girls!". If you feel similarly, I recommend Log Horizon which takes a similar premise (everyone's trapped in the MMO) and does more with the world building aspect.
