This is categorically false. The men are not raped, depersoned, and bred as chattel, and it's honestly a hell of a lot weirder to me that the fandom seems to cling to it being basically the same thing. It's really not.

He probably realized their hypocrisy early on which is why he pushed to become a frumentari. I could understand this point if we got the original Ulysses where he was “the legion mouthpiece” but if you’re gonna blame that on him might as well blame the pc for leaving Caesar alive when you meet him the first time. There’s plenty of reasons to hate him but this one rings a little hollow.

One doesn't 'push' to become a Frumentarii, if Caesar's commentary is in any way a good example. To me, it sounded like he hand-picked the most talented of the lot, and the most ruthless. As for blaming the PC for leaving Caesar alive, holy hell, there is a world of difference between carrying out Caesar's agenda remotely because you're brainwashed to do so, and not attacking a warlord in the middle of his own camp. Frumentarii also act with autonomy, go 'deep cover' so as not to draw suspicion (re: Curtis), which means adopting profligate ways of living and adapting. If the example you used had was plausible, then Ulysses would have cut and run a long time before he reported back to Caesar that Hoover Dam was a thing. He arguably had a few chances to go his own way.

Yes, it takes a while to shake off the brainwashing, but you're taking a very 'moral relativism' view of it, which is still a bullshit view of philosophy (and one of the few cases where Godwin's Law ceases to apply). More importantly, two things: I said 'moderately annoyed by.' Maybe you were thrown off by the language, but 'hate' is a strong word. I found it annoying to listen to a former Legionary talk poo poo without being able to call him out, and feel that simply saying 'I had a change of heart' doesn't really excuse spreading cultural genocide, or subscribing to a faction that runs off the backs of chattel slaves. Like it or not, women are the subjugated 'class' in the Legion, which I'd imagine is deliberate on Caesar's part, re: it's the main reason why a Legionary wouldn't view himself as a slave-- because there's always someone 'less than' them that they can point to in the form of a thing that is no longer a human being, but rather, is straight-up property that can be used and abused as the owner sees fit.

Still better than most characters you'll encounter in Fallout 3. Goddamn.

No argument here. TBH, I was primarily venting about an avenue of conversation that was absent/I felt was lacking when playing through the game. It felt like being unnecessarily polite when your courier, or you the player, might have some very strong views about their new travel guide. So, that should be the takeaway. Not that I 'hate' the character, even if I arguably hate what he stood for and more than likely did in the name of his prior allegiance.

Failure to accept his own past as something to own up to was a failing, and it's a shame it wasn't properly addressed.

I actually finally started a Legion run for the first time, using Roleplayer’s Alternative Start to roleplay as a Frumentarius trying to arrange everything behind the scenes so the Legion is as powerful as possible.

My first act was to disguise myself by killing a house of Novac residents with a machete to steal their clothes and buy a motel room as a base.

Fallout 3 was more annoying to get around and just plain harder to find anything. All the important locations are just scattered around at random with no relation to the area immediately surrounding them. In New Vegas you can find a bunch of poo poo just by following roads and paths, but in FO3 roads bear no relation to settlements and most of the landscape is just the same grey/green slurry. I literally was picking a direction to walk in a straight line, and went like an hour without hitting anything. I also never found Dogmeat despite a bunch of wandering around DC. I hated a lot of the npcs and quests, but I can't complain as hard about that because it was so hard to find any of them. I did like the one necronomicon building at least.

Ulysses trained up a tribe to respect him just to send them off on a mission of extermination mostly for laughs, and then you find audio logs where he's jackin' off about how they'd never be good enough to join the legion.

I mean the thing is i don't even disagree with you. I misread or flat out misunderstood your issues. I think you're right in that Ulysses is using the guilt he felt from being in Caesar's Legion to create a false narrative to project onto the Courier. It's clear that he went nuts after seeing the White Legs co-opt his tribe's braids without understanding their meaning. He couldn't handle the fact that he was part of a campaign of cultural genocide so he used Hopeville and the Courier as stand-ins. The Courier had unknowingly wiped a place of promise off the map. Much like what Ulysses was doing until he realized his mistake with the White Legs. So he concocted a narrative that would place him as the underdog while the Courier would be the big bad who obviously knew the damage he was doing. The difference is that we had no clue until it was right in our face, like Ulysses. In essence the whole of Ulysses's game is to punish himself without wanting to work towards fixing his mistakes.

Now that being said. The buzzword of moral relativism is a lame assessment. The men are still slaves who either fight or die along with their culture. Men are literally decimated just because they were under performing. Fact remains it's just a different holding pen. Seems like the Legion is all bad to me. Nothing relative about that. Caesar's Legion is horrifying because it grooms the victims into becoming perpetrators of violence without them even realizing it. That's the whole crux of Ulysses's character.

It's the difference between slaves, the chattel subhumans who can be raped and beaten on a regular basis and slaves, like the Janissaries, who carried a lot of political power and perks despite technically being disallowed from changing jobs or any sort of self-determination.

Caesar rules by force, but that force springs from loyal followers that keep the rest of the legion in line.

Yeah you're right. The only "system" in Caesar's Legion is Caesar, the Legionaries, and then the slaves. The Legionaries even have some sort of upwards momentum. Giving them more autonomy than the slaves. I'll take the L on this one.

Edit: vv yep I truly need it explained to me in the simplest terms possible sometimes.

Because this point needs to be driven home with a very big hammer: Just because person A and person B are both slaves to person C, doesn't mean that any power differential between A and B is forgiven or non-existent. While men in the legion may be slaves to Caesar, women and children in the legion are slaves to Caesar and the men in the legion.

I don't know if it got posted here or elsewhere, but a tale of two wastelands got a big patch a couple months ago if you're looking for an excuse to get back into FNV and FO3. I guess they spent the last 3 years rebuilding the whole thing based on what they learned when they built it the first time. Seems a lot less crash happy now. I'm gonna try a big marathon run and see if I can stay engaged with it.

Balance is still arse in the F3 side of things. They refuse to do anything to tone down bullet spongers but took the time to ensure the Hunting Rifles in both games are both different. They claim it can be solved by using the hardier ammo which is sold in small handfuls through the capital wasteland.

And half the mods that add some visual variety to the F3 side are still broken too.

Oh and another issue with the current ATTW build is that the new station they set up in the capital ruins for some reason always has constantly spawning muties. That scale to your level. And a scripted enclave vertibird team also scaling to your level. That spawn in both the exterior and interior station lobby.

Enjoy fighting those guys going back and forth between games. Every. loving. Time.

If anything, get Fallout Character Overhaul. It gives all the major characters and a good portion of the generic NPC's amazing looking head models/textures. There's tons of guides out there for graphic overhauls too, but in short; get NMC's textures and install Ojo Bueno on top of it.

As for mods that actually add great content to the game:

Get Willow as a companion and make Novac your home.

The New Bison Steve mod allows you to rebuild the Bison Steve hotel, get it up and running and make a tidy profit from the casino once it's fully restored. Less Empty Primm goes nicely along side it and turns Primm into a proper settlement.

Autumn Leaves is a great quest mod that focuses on puzzle and riddle solving that takes place entirely in a vault just outside of Novac.

Oh, and get F4QuickLoot. It gives you the quickloot system from Fallout 4 in New Vegas and it works like a loving charm.

ThaumPenguin

F4Quickloot hasn't been updated since 2016 and is supposedly quite bug-ridden, so I'd recommend using the actively maintained Loot Menu instead

e: Loot Menu is also available for Fallout 3 and Oblivion, it's pretty neat
