Hey GC4U, I think I remember you being into Vandersteens. I'm building a home theater setup, and I have my eye on a pair of 2C's on Craigslist. Talk me into/out of them? What are they like? If I'm honest, they caught my eye because they're high end, affordable, and I like the way they look :shobon:

sorry I'm late.
Funny you should bring up Vandersteens. I went down a rabbit hole last night looking into ICEpower modules and miniDSP. I'm trying to figure out if I can turn my 2Ci's into powered speakers. That involves building an active 4 way crossover with the miniDSP and powering all 4 drivers in each speaker separately. Whoo that got expensive fast.

Anywho I really like my Vandy's. 2C's are pretty good. 2Ci's are even better, and my 2CE signature II are absolutely fantastic. They're power hungry though. I'm driving them with a 100wpc amp and I have to crank that sucker way up for just watching TV normally.
In order to get the most out of them though you really need to have a dedicated listening position. They're time aligned so your position relative to each speaker is really important. If you're just going to toss them in a big open main level room with no treatments and listen to them from 20' away in the kitchen then really you can get away with any crappy speaker and it won't make a huge difference.

For the money, Vandersteens are absolutely an excellent value. You'll be hard pressed to find something better for the money, but the application matters.

Anywho, how much are you looking at for a pair? I think $400~450 is a decent price for a pair of 2ci (that's what I paid). Some people want more than that for their 2C but that's not worth it imo.

The ones I saw were $350 for 2C. Little over an hour away, though, which is why I haven't gone to get them yet, haha. I don't have a photo of the space, but I'll snap something tomorrow evening. They'd be either side of a 65" TV, about 6-8 feet from the seating. The space isn't set up yet, so this is all negotiable. I recently moved and I haven't had room for this kind of setup before, so it's all new. My main concern is that there's a wall to the right but it's semi-open to the left, so the reflections might be uneven. I have a decent sub (Monoprice Monolith 10). My budget is "under $500" but it's more a matter of "bang for buck" value. I have a Sansui 9090DB to drive them, and it's rated for 125W/ch so that should be fine.

If they come with stands I say definitely go for it. They're very good speakers. The 2C is older though so you might want to check the woofer and make sure the foam surrounds are intact. Bring a flashlight to shine through the speaker cloth. If you can't see it from the front then try shining it through from the side.

I mentioned a few days ago about skateboarding at a local skatepark, it's a new park that recently opened in the city that has been a very long time coming, because the city was granted 2 million to build one but for years could not agree with park organizers where to put it. After tons of proposals the city refused to give up any "prime" real estate and the organizers were forced to accept a location in a bad part of the city with crime and violence problems, with the city refusing to acknowledge there might be any problems with the location.

Well the other night a 15 year old kid trying to skate got beat within an inch of his life, was curb stomped and all of his teeth knocked out by some local (adult) thugs. And people going to the park have been having their cars stolen, and anything left unattended is stolen. I have been going to the park for awhile now and have witnessed fights, groups of roaming kids stealing poo poo and then holding it for ransom, and then the kids going to get their thug adult relatives if they have any problems. The police presence is a joke, apparently while the kid was being curb stomped, there was a cop in the parking lot that did nothing.

Now people are up in arms on facebook and the city isn't saying a word, great waste of millions of dollars to build a long awaited skate park, and just leave it for the thugs to take over. So may people (including myself) were looking forward to this park and now it's just a place for criminals to hang out and stake their claim. So pissed right now, the people that run this city are greedy incompetent idiots.

Apparently the kid that got beat up had nothing to do with the situation to begin with. These kids (teenagers) roam around and harass and steal poo poo from people in the park, and if anyone stands up to them they go and get their "brothers". I've personally heard them threaten people with it, and apparently some adult stood up to them and left when he realized what was happening, so when the "brothers" got their they just decided to beat up some random kid instead. Yeah, all the skateparks I used to travel to (Lakeland, Brandon, Bradenton) never had these problems. Of course St.Pete is the last city in this area to finally build one (the most expensive and biggest in FL) and they build it in the shittiest part of town they can.

Don't throw good money after bad. Depending on how far gone it is, if you can't find utility in it, get rid of it. i dragged that subaru around for a few years with insurance on it and everything thinking i was about to do something with it. Only put more money into it if you can increase it's value by a greater amount than it costs. From the sound of it, the $9k is gone either way. With more specifics i could provide a humorous comedy answer.

(and can't post for 11 years!)

I angered the car gods by attempting to fix too many things at once.

Always leave at least one thing broken (or at least don't go willy nilly trying to clean a DBW throttle body). At least I've bodged it back into being semi-driveable after a new gasket and various ways of tightening the throttle body bolts, but I still have a wandering 1500-2000 RPM idle. (initially it was 3000, banging the limp rev limiter, with no throttle response, and multiple codes immediately on startup... no codes yet from driving it around the parking lot)

I think a new throttle body is in my immediate future. Somehow a brand new OEM one is cheaper than every aftermarket option on Rockauto. :wtc:
