I'm kind of in awe that the thing where it doesn't snow when I'm in the mountains has continued even though I live in Colorado now. It almost exclusively snows around my days off or when I plan to be at a resort. At steamboat today and tomorrow and there's nothing. 1-2 feet forecast over Thursday and Friday.

I've totally missed some good days on my days off when I didn't head out, but come on.

I stopped paying attention to the forecast when I realized it was causing me to ski less than I ought to, and gave me a bad case of FOMO.

Just go ski.

Yes! Also, Bridger is also really a locals mountain. It's run by a local non-profit organization set up to run it. Not a ton of amenities, low prices and tons of locals with most of the tourists going to Big Sky instead. I love the vibe at Bridger.

I was waiting out traffic with a couple of slices and a pint at the Ratskellar in Govy on Sunday. While sitting at the bar one of the bartenders friends was talking about how great her trip to Montana was and how nobody gave a poo poo if you ducked ropes.

I asked, "so you weren't at Bridger then?" She replied, "Nope, Big Sky."

I drove up to Vermont this weekend, after a couple days on "fast and firm" conditions, today it's been snowing for a few hours and is gonna continue through the night.. 6-10 inches expected. Sugarbush should be good tomorrow and start to get back into shape after the usual melt then freeze session that happened the past week.
Yeah, the bumps were in pretty dire condition after everything locked up Friday late morning, with the groomers rest of the weekend getting nice cat ice patches through the day. Hopefully the snow was heavy and sticky enough though that it bonds to the steeper lines of FIS and Black Diamond.

Since it's only one day I would just normally skip that day, especially since it's a long weekend Sunday so it's going to be packed, but I have a Super G race scheduled for that day. On Monday I trained 3 runs of Super G in -22 and got frostbite on 2 toes.

I still pay attention to the forecast to get in as many powder days as I can, but you do make a good point: don't be a slave to conditions, because there is always fun to be had at the mountain. poo poo, I've even had fun in the rain in limited doses.

I was at Ellen today, the woods over by Inverness were really good and pretty untouched. They probably got about 8-10 solid inches, though they claimed it was a foot  Today definitely made the trip worth it

So I'm in the market for new snowboarding gear and price will be less of an issue than it has been prior...

I'm currently riding a 4 year-old basic Rossi 151 twin that's been more than beat up.

Does anyone have any experience riding Niche boards? Looking at the Story for it's all around potential and grip in icy snow. I'm gonna go with a longer board, probably 156 (I'm 5' 9), but don't want something so unwieldly that I can't hit the park when I'm feeling it.

Aside from jibbing the Story seems to be able to do everything I'm looking for, and on top of that the company is committed to sustainable manufacturing.

Am I right here in my upgrade path? I want something that'll be good for Mammoth pow days, but the rest of the time I'm in Socal where ice and slush can reign supreme. My local mountain (Mountain High) has been having an amazing season but I know we'll probably be back to the same hard pack snow we've had in the past few years.

Edit:

I've never ridden a Niche board, but have heard nothing but good things about them. I believe that they've moved all production to the Mothership (Capita's factory) too.

Also, I've never ridden in South Korea, but I wouldn't go in with high expectations.

My sister lived in Seoul for four years, I think they went once or twice and decided that flying to Japan was the better move.

Looking at somewhere up in NH/VT area. Wife doesn’t ski but is willing to try again - any family friendly recommendations?

I have never been but have heard good things about Smuggler's Notch. I looked into a few places around there and it looks like there are a couple options. By family friendly do you need more green/blue runs, or are you more interested in making sure they have good lessons/daycare options? If crowds are a worry I would imagine going further North would get you further away from NY and crowds.

Thanks for the info. I’d say lessons for her and then a good mix of greens and maybe blues for her to get comfortable.

I'd probably recommend Smuggs or Okemo as pretty solid family friendly with great beginner/intermediate areas, leaning towards Smuggs as it's got far better expert skiing as well. Sugarbush (my home mountain so I'm biased) is also pretty rad, though they turned the best beginner skiing at the resort (sunny quad) into terrain parks.

Fair loving enough, lol.

I know Pyeongchang's snow is gonna be man-made but at least it'll be a good snowmaking system, it seems like their coverage isn't gonna be a problem. And we're used to riding ice anyway given our local conditions.

We're also going to hit an indoor run in Saigon, that should be interesting.

Niche boards?

The only thing I remember about one friend's Niche board some years ago was that it had a super aggressive form of magnetraction, and he kept catching an edge and eating poo poo on seemingly normal carves because it was so weird to get used to. I don't know if they eased up on the magnetraction cut or not since then, but seeing that didn't make me want to buy one.
