Warbird posted:It appears to be Puerto Rico. Cuba is blue stripes. Puerto Rico is red stripes. The image is Spain minding its own business, the US blaming Spain for the explosion of the USS Maine, America backing Cuba's Battle for Independence against Spain as retaliation, thus kicking off the Spanish American War. Okay, I was thinking Cuba, but I was thinking it was like the Philippines where the US had control of it for a while.

As a historical footnote, Spain losing that war was a bit of a shock to the other European powers at the time.

In the comic the US gives independence to some country by giving it to Spain? I really don't get it.

Jerry Cotton posted:In the comic the US gives independence to some country by giving it to Spain? I really don't get it. Read my post again. Cuba was fighting Spain for Independence. The USS Maine explosion prompted America to be like "eat poo poo, Spain, this is your fault" and then America backed Cuba versus Spain. This started the Spanish American War. So America is sending a fully backed and now independent Cuba to fight Spain. It's actually a really succinct comic for summing up roughly 3 years of political posturing over an island between two empires.

Yeah, anyone taking bets got hosed on that one. Spain was super-scary for so long because of their armada and the size of their empire pretty much everyone was like "lol, America, you done hosed up now" and then America just went "lol, no one likes you, guerilla warfare teaming up with the locals" and the empire lost. We did not remember the lessons learned from the SA War when Russia did this to us in Vietnam.

Also wasn't the Spanish fleet in the Pacific still like wooden ships, whereas the Americans had modern (for the time) armored battleships? I really don't know poo poo about this war outside of that hardcore history episode "The American Peril", and these forums have informed me that I'm foolish for enjoying that podcast. Anyway....

I think you're confusing 1600s Spain: The giant colonial superpower, and late 1800s Spain: The civil unrest wracked economic basket case that had already lost 90% of it's empire to colonial rebellions. The Spanish "Armada" had a whopping one battleship. They were broke and long into their decline. Everyone knew they were going to get their rear end kicked in by the US Navy, especially in a war fought mostly in the United States' backyard. Thank you for caring enough to actually give a straight answer. The only multiplayer I ever messed with was Team Fortress 2 and Warframe so I have no idea what game communities look like for most things unless they're getting mad at their being less boobs in the new one.
