euphronius posted:https://twitter.com/mattgelb/status/1097944566941007872 One of the main points of the surplus value of young controllable talent is that free agents are paid more than some $/WAR formula is going to spit out. If you're not taking advantage of the savings on talented young players and the fact that your team is loaded compared to other teams, you're not doing this correctly.

Hey any of you smart people know if the FIP constant is calculated separately for each league or once for the whole MLB?

I assume the White Sox have zero chance at Harper now. If they weren't willing to pay $300M for Machado they have no prayer with Harper.

Oh it was still worth posting since I just checked BP - Baseball Prospectus uses an NL and an AL specific constant while Fangraphs (which I’m more familiar with) uses a single MLB constant.

That helps! This is for the NPB thread. I figured that I will be comparing players across both Pacific League and the Central League I should use a combined constant. The free Japanese stats sites use a thing called DIPS. It is a form of FIP that I can't figure out.

I still can't believe Trout had his best OPS year last year. Its weird because you just hear every year "Trout is amazing" it kinda becomes just background noise. But he is just simply deadly. Wish he played for a cool team.

I do think that if Albert started his career at the same time as Trout it might be different...stuff like the shift would've impacted Albert a lot more.
