Yea I'd definitely go with either The Fly or The Blob but I really would have a hard time putting one over the other. Maybe The Fly just because the original Fly isn't as good as the original Blob. There's really no argument which version of The Fly is the definitive one, whereas some people do prefer the 50's Blob to the remake.

I just listened to Mick Garris' podcast and he had David Russell on to talk about Blob 88 and Freddy 3, and he was just so happy to have done so many practical effects in that, and how he thought they held up. I guess we just about have thread consensus then that The Blob is the best remake of an original IP, and Anthropophagus 2000 is the worst.

Hard to go wrong with a movie that features Del Close as a preacher who gets torched with a flamethrower.

There are definitely several regular posters that prefer the original they just aren't here right now I guess. I'm not one of them though, give me the disgusting gore of the 88 version any day. Never been much of a Steve Mcqueen guy though.

Evil Dead 2 > Ash vs. Evil Dead > Evil Dead > Army of Darkness haven't seen 2013 The original Evil Dead is wildly overrated. It's an ugly, spiteful little film and only remarkable as a technical achievement. People pick out the tree rape in particular as being in bad taste and they're not wrong, but it's less that the movie just made that one misstep, and more that the same attitude permeates the entire film and that's just the most obvious manifestation of it. (This is also why Army of Darkness is worse. It's not gorier or more explicit -- and that was never the problem -- but it's unpleasant in exactly the same ways.) And while yeah, it's impressive and inspiring that a couple of friends filming in their backyard made something that looks that professional, treating that effort as a proxy for its actual quality as a film is a mistake. It's the cinematic equivalent of being impressed by how many notes some guitarist squeezed into a solo without consideration of what it sounds like. Evil Dead 2 is roughly the same idea with better execution and much better humor, and probably the only Raimi movie I'd rank as one of the all-time horror classics.

Okay but it’s not like the film mislead you or anything. It being spiteful and mean is why it’s great. It doesn’t have to be your thing but it just feels like a weird thing to pick on, when the movie has evil in its name. I assume evil bong is real mean too

Neo Rasa posted:Apocalypse Now gets a pass because of the timing - the indigenous people were going to kill the cow in that way at that time and had decided to do so independently of Apocalypse Now being filmed, Coppola just filmed what they were already doing. I don't think that's the issue though, the animals in Cannibal Holocaust were killed quickly and eaten afterwards as well. What people object to is the depiction of a real killing in and of itself.

You have this square-jawed football hero high school kid, set up the whole time as the male lead who will need to rescue Shawnee Smith(!!) in act 3... and then he just gets melted the gently caress down at the break into act 2. It's the best swerve of its kind until probably Feast or (out of the genre, but also stellar) Executive Decision
