I suppose this sort of pales in comparison to whatever regressive death cult poo poo is going on in Comicsgate Proper, but an article about C2E2 debuts brought a company called Counterpoint Comics to my attention. Apparently founded by old school Rob Liefeld buddy Marat Mychaels, as best as I can tell it's a company that has figured out how to circumvent the "hey don't sell prints of licensed characters at cons" rules by just constantly doing "exclusive variant covers" for the same comic book over and over and explaining that they're parodies. Their debut series "Do You Pooh?" I guess has had more than one issue published but each issue has had in Mychaels's estimation at least 20 variant covers, all of which fall into the category of "Winnie the Pooh as Deadpool", "Winnie the Pooh as 8bit Deadpool, "Winnie the Pooh as Venomized Deadpool" "Winnie the Pooh as Deadpool Smoking Weed with Wolverine" "Winnie the Pooh as Spawn" "Winnie the Pooh as Spawn AND Venom" "Winnie the Pooh as Deadpool vs. Tigger Venom" "Winnie the Pooh as Aquaman" "Winnie the Pooh as Jason Momoa Aquaman" "Winnie the Pooh as Jason Momoa Aquaman and Also Gold Foil" etc. It's a baffling Just Two Things grift but I guess harmless. His follow-up series Notti & Nyce is the same concept except all of their dozens of "Two Bad Girls in Freddy and Jason cosplay" "Two Bad Girls in Han Solo and Boba Fett Cosplay" "Two Bad Girls homaging an old Jim Lee X-Men or Todd McFarlane Spider-Man Cover" come in varying levels of explicit nudity. Some of them aren't parodies, they're just Two Bad Girls licking lollipops or getting fingered by Santa or whatever. Mychaels has finally merged these two things in what caught my eye and I have to imagine is going to get him sued sooner than later: quote:Hardlee Thinn is a parody book of Harley Quinn. After being kicked out her own comic for being too "voluptuous" Hardlee get's payback in her own unique way. Counterpoint doesn't publish their comics digitally (or even in an edition where the single issue costs less than $25) so I have no idea what the parody inside is, but essentially the gimmick is "what if Harley Quinn had like, really big breasts? And sometimes she showed them on nude variant covers?". Unlike the Winnie the Pooh/Deadpool thing, 90% of the Hardlee Thinn covers are just more sexually explicit (or big breasted) re-draws of existing Harley Quinn comic books, except Terry Dodson/Adam Hughes/Amanda Conner never actually had Harl--I mean Hardlee's boobs pop out of her tank top. Just GIS or eBay any of these three titles, it's something else.

Wow. One of the first results for Hardlee Thinn is a parody of the Janet Jackson Rolling Stone cover (timely!) with Hardlee and I'm guessing Pooh as Deadpool.

Ehh, it's pretty harmless. No one is going to mistake those for official Marvel or DC products, the Hardlee Thinn ones might toe the line because she does look pretty much just like Harley Quinn, but I doubt it's cutting into Bruce Timm's royalty checks.

lifg posted:Isn't selling unlicensed art the entire point of the artist alley at cons? Technically you're supposed to be selling your own original works. I worked a booth at the first C2E2 and the artist agreement clearly said you were not supposed to sell prints of poo poo you didn't own.

There's been several instances of actual pros getting in trouble for selling prints of characters they created or worked on.

I agree that it's pretty harmless, I was just sort of surprised Counterpoint exists and it hearkens back to a more innocent time for lovely Comics Controversy where it was just Frank Cho doing lovely sketch covers and not whatever the hell Richard Meyers/Mike S. Miller/Ethan Van Sciver are doing today. I think the big issue (and the only case I can remember of actual action being taken) was when Marvel went after Gary Friedrich (a writer) for selling prints of actual Ghost Rider comic book covers that he did not draw and in some cases did not write the interior story for, and even that was largely because he was doing so while sitting at a booth reading CREATOR OF GHOST RIDER while suing Marvel for ownership of Ghost Rider. Then there was a lot of talk and concern between creators, but the general consensus appeared to be: -- Rob Liefeld selling sketches of Deadpool: 100% okay -- Rob Liefeld selling prints of original sketches of Deadpool: Not 100% legal, but no action has ever been taken against it to my knowledge* *The one actual story I remember about someone in Artists' Alley getting in trouble (and possibly the other instance where cons might have started putting in language of a 'crackdown' aside from the Friedrich case) was a story of an artist who never worked for the big two getting yelled at (but not sued) by Paul Levitz for selling a print of Silver Age Teen Titans pulling a Porky's and watching Wonder Woman in the shower or something like that. Levitz (and by extension DC, where Levitz was the publisher at the time) seemed upset about Artists' Alley having a lot of softcore porn prints of their characters, and even then their ire seemed to be targeted at a few specific people, and not even people like a Frank Cho or Ed Benes or Clay Mann or Jim Balent who had a track record of getting paid to draw 'sexy' characters for DC. This would appear to be the loophole that Mychaels and company appear to be trying to exploit. --Rob Liefeld selling prints of the cover of New Mutants #98: Not at all legal but I think Marvel will provide/make prints of any cover an artist has done for them for them to sell/sign at cons (I know Paolo Rivera did this and it seemed to work fine for him, also other artists but Rivera is the one I personally spoke to about it) --Fabian Nicieza selling prints of Rob Liefeld Deadpool covers while suing Marvel for ownership of Deadpool: Definitely not okay The controversy about this (which I want to say was like 2010-2012?) was also muddied because some artists -- most prominently Sean Murphy -- took this as a well intentioned but confusing moment to tout the concept of creator-owned comics and not working to service trademarks for the Pervert Suit Nurse Novel Ammonite Pimp Big Two, because if you make your name drawing Batman people will only want sketches of Batman and Slime Warner could steal that all away from your in a heartbeat, but if you create your own character like Punk Rock Jesus you will own him forever and all of your sketches and prints of Punk Rock Jesus will be yours for all time. Which is a valid point but the way the argument was made gave people the impression that DC had in fact cracked down on him ever drawing Batman again, as opposed to it being a personal choice . He also went back and did a Batman series for DC, prints of which are now available for sale on Murphy's website and presumably at his Artists Alley table as well. Marvel and DC tend to look the other way when it's a creator currently working for them selling prints. The Moys have gotten a little poo poo in the past as they used to have folders of pornographic drawings of the female Legionnaires.

Granted, it wasn't around very long before the chuds started stretching the meaning, because it originated in spaces of "Let's laugh at the weird people," which tends to be fairly chuddy if you don't work to drive them away. It was a thing used to describe people who would aggressively argue half-baked progressive views online and reactive teenagers on tumbr and the dying era of LiveJournal in like 2009-2010. But it was also pretty much immediately used on everyone espousing anything left-of-center or talking about anything social justice-related. The wank material makes some sense (though I'm sure you can find whatever Harley Quinn porn you want with a google search for free, so...), but the Winnie the Pooh characters are the weird... not constant, but recurring element. There's no nudity in there, but maybe don't click on it at work anyway, though I'm sure HR would love to know why you're looking at nazi Winnie the Pooh pointing a gun at two clowns in lingerie.
