I mean people have given a specific definition of fanfic so it’s more a shorthand than something they can’t express. The rest of your post doesn’t really have anything to do with anything as it seems to be countering the idea that shows can’t literally be fanfic or they always are fanfic I don’t know what your going for there

CharlestheHammer posted:I mean people have given a specific definition of fanfic so it’s more a shorthand than something they can’t express. Well folks were talking about like, situations where the people currently writing the show were the ones enjoying the show when it started, so basically it's sanctioned fanfiction. Like all superhero comics are fanfic at this point, the creators are long dead and everyone writing them now read them before. Long running TV shows are the same way. I don't know, hell. I guess I'm saying the idea of canon is a lie, and media isn't automatically superior because it is officially licensed and not fan-made.

If we're talking about fan fiction level writing, nothing compares to Sealab 2021 which literally had an episode that was adapted fan-fiction. The later seasons of Sealab were such a hot dumpster fire it's a modern miracle that we got both Frisky Dingo and Archer from the ashes.

I miss Frisky Dingo so much. Archer is funny, but it's not the same. I need more Xander Crews and Master Cylinder dances.

Archer got tired really quickly, and devolved into endlessly repeated catchphrases surprisingly fast. Frisky Dingo is so quotable, in the best way. Then again, so is Sealab. And Aqua Teen. And Metalocalypse.

They made two episodes of a FD spin off that was floated to give Adam Reed time off until he felt ready to return but nothing really came of it. Although, in the vein of this thread, Frisky Dingo does have the problem of a few too many rape jokes with the character of Ronnie.

Yeah, now it's a noir detective thing. It also seems to be taking itself a lot more seriously now. I've given up after a few episodes, to be honest. Archer should have ended at season 4. Season 3, even EDIT - lol it's changed again, seems to be some Gilligan's Island thing now? EDIT EDIT - Krieger is a parrot now. Archer has officially jumped the parrot Barry Foster has a new favorite as of 22:37 on Mar 4, 2019 |

The subsequent seasons are happening in his head while he's in a coma which they've used to soft reboot and change the premise. I think there's more season in the pipeline last I heard.

I know I'm late on Breaking Bad chat but I think a lot of the reason why people got so attached to Walter White was because the first episode laid the pity party on so thick. He really kinda seemed like he had the worst life in the world. Although when you hear his backstory you find out his lovely situation is mostly his own fault. For me it was midway through season 3 that I decided I couldn't stand the characters since they all sucked so bad and I quit watching. Same thing happened with Better Call Saul when they started telegraphing Jimmy's descent into crime. Like obviously I know it's gonna happen because he ends up as Saul Goodman, but it kind of coincided with all the characters becoming kind of douchey. I dunno maybe I'm just a child and want a total good guy protagonist.

I feel the same way, and just consider it more fatigue with the cynical anti-hero obsession. Sometimes it's nice to have good guys being good for goodness' sake rather than out of some contrived selfish desire.

Better Call Saul is a slog to get through after season 2. There was maybe 5 hours of interesting story in the last 20 episodes. I really liked the first two seasons though. Well, the first season, got annoying when they hit the reset button at the beginning of the second once they found out they had a bunch more seasons to make.
