Opening Day is just a week or two away. And Hope Springs Eternal! But as a fun retrospective, I thought it'd be neat to revisit an old SAS staple, the All-Millennium team. Now this will be a little tricky, but I'd like to see a roster of your team using players only in the last 18 years. BUT - there's a catch. You can only use a player once, and you can only use a year once. Thus, you can't just have 03, 04 and 05 Randy Johnson as your three starting pitchers, nor can you use the entire 2016 Cubs team for the all-millennium lineup.

I picked 18 because no one gives a poo poo about extraneous backups, and because it fits nicely into the current millennium's list. As usual, baseball-reference.com is an invaluable resource. So let's get to work. Make sure you have a defense of your choices!

The problem with the Marlins is that as a "draw fans to the ballpark" enterprise, their entire philosophy was "have 1 transcendental player at a time," so there were 2-3 year stretches where Giancarlo Stanton or Miggy were the only guys on the roster to post an OPS+ over 100. This makes finding tricky, since you can only use one Stanton season, so the other years, there's a lot of nothing.

Weirdly, the early 2000s always had one Marlin reliever who would put up an absurd season. It was never the same guy and he was never good again.

Also, if someone could do the Reds, it'd be much appreciated.

How much leeway are we allowing for position here? The Dodgers have had piles of crap at 2B for awhile but there are surplus SS/3B options who could easily play there instead

And honestly I'd consider putting like 2013 Hanley Ramirez at 1B too for that matter

That's a nice set of 11 dynasty points there, it would be a shame if 3 rings were to happen with it
I have a Giants one in the works but somehow I hosed up and ended up with 2005 JT Snow and his 86 OPS+ at first base so nobody take the Giants while I rejigger this

So the Astros had some really good teams early in the century, have been fantastic recently, and utter garbage for about 10 years in between! I had to put Clemens in at his "worst" year as an Astro in order to make it all work, but otherwise, drat good team with a fantastic lineup, solid rotation and one of the best back-ends you'll ever see. Just don't put in Lucas Harrell or Mark Melancon, please.

Could also put 2018 Justin Turner or Cody Bellinger at 1B but I wanted to highlight how truly absurd Hanley's 2013 campaign was (plus I'd have to replace Kevin Brown's 2000 peak with probably Ryu's 2013). It's a shame I couldn't include Chris Taylor's 4+ WAR utility effort in 2017, he played 5 different positions that year. There were some lean years in there between like 2005-2012, and I had to go with one of Kershaw's "weaker" years because the rest of the 2012 team was so mediocre (Andre Ethier was the second highest WAR at 3.5).

This pitching staff is pretty ridiculous, and the bullpen is nightmare fuel.

edit: if we are including a second UT position to use all years from 2000-2018 just slide 2018 Justin Turner into that spot (.312/.406/.518, 14HR, 154 wRC+, 4.2 fWAR in 103 games)

total WAR for 19-man roster: 102.6 - 96.5

Realmuto for Pudge, Beckett fifth starter.

Anyway here's the Twins!

Some notes:
Morneau's 2010 is obviously better but Thome's 2010 is the best DH season by such a huge margin that the sacrifice had to be made. Also this let me put Jim Thome on the team.
Buxton over Torii because he was actually acceptable at the plate in 2016 and his Defense is so far off the charts that I had to do it.
Nathan's 2006 suffered a similar fate but that was the only way to get Liriano on the team.
I had to do a lot of deck chair shuffling with years to get non-embarrassing players at a couple positions.
I'm sad I couldn't fit Radke on the team :(

Here's mine, I got to 97.2 bWAR with the Phils.

Might be able to re-arrange things to get that number higher, but not much higher.

The Phils have been really good this millennium, even with the couple down years between 2013-2017.

Also Nola is the single season bWAR leader for the Phils at least since 2001.

Batting
C - Willson Contreras - 2017 - .276/.356/.499 - WAR 4.0 - Break out year and a very similar to Soto's ROTY .285/.364/.504 /3.3 WAR /119 OPS+

1B - Derrek Lee - 2005 - .335/.418/.662 - WAR 7.7 - Lee's best year ever.

2B - Javier Báez - 2018 - .290/.326/.554 - WAR 6.3 - Báez near MVP year.

3B - Kris Bryant - 2016 - .292/.385/.554 - WAR 7.4 - MVP

SS - Starlin Castro - 2011 - .307/.341/.432 - WAR 3.2 - Not Starlin's best year but close and 2011 NL hit leader.

LF - Alfonso Soriano - 2007 - .299/.337/.560 - WAR 4.3 - Soriano best year as a Cub.

CF - Juan Pierre - 2006 - .292/.330/.388 - WAR 2.0 - 2006 was a bad team, but hey 58 SB

RF - Sammy Sosa - 2001 - .328/.437/.737 - WAR 10.3 - Sosa best year. Bonds was still nearly 2 WAR better.

UTL - Anthony Rizzo - 2014 - .286/.386/.527 - WAR 5.2 - Didn't know if I could sneak Rizzo in with Lee being so good in 2005.

Pitching

SP - Jake Arrieta - 2015 - 22-6 / 4.92 K/BB - WAR 8.3 - Best second half ever.

SP - Mark Prior - 2003 - 18-6 / 4.90 K/BB - WAR 7.4 - Prior and Wood's career high WAR seasons both happened in 2003.

SP - Ryan Dempster - 2008 - 17-6 / 2.46 K/BB - WAR 6.9 - I like Kerry Wood better.

SP - Carlos Zambrano - 2004 - 16-8/ 2.32 K/BB - WAR 6.7 - plus .6 batting WAR = 7.3 on the Ohtani WAR scale.

LR - Travis Wood - 2013- 9-12/ 3.11 ERA / 2.18 K/BB - WAR 4.4 - Might be cheating to stick him in the bullpen.

LR - Jeff Samardzija - 2012- 9-13/ 3.81 ERA / 3.21 K/BB - WAR 2.3 - 2012 was a bad team except Darwin Barney

SU - Ángel Guzmán - 2009 - 15 Holds / 2.95 ERA / 2.04 K/BB - WAR 1.7 - Not bad. Better then Kevin Gregg or Marmol that year.

SU - Joe Borowski - 2002 - 2 Saves / 2.73 ERA / 3.34 K/BB - WAR 2.3 - 95 IP. Borowski would become the closer in 2003.

CL - Carlos Marmol - 2010- 38 saves / 2.55 ERA/ 2.65 K/BB - WAR 2.7 - 16 K/9 wild man.

Total BrWAR = 93.1

Sad I could not work Kerry Wood in. Starlin Castro is the best SS in the past 20 years for the Cubs. The 2010s had some bad teams.

I could change Ángel Guzmán in 2009 for Lilly 5.0 WAR but Guzmán had the best ERA+ on the team at 152. Or Borowski for Wood 4.4 WAR in 2002.

This would push the total WAR to 98.5

Edit - gently caress up. Marmol was better then Sean Marshal in 2010
