Most musicians can't make a living just from their music, even ones working in much more commercial styles than black metal, so I don't think that argument really supports the idea that commercialisation of the style is good.

The commercialization is wonderful for musicians in the genre. Sure if you just make albums and throw them out on streaming you won’t make poo poo (and that’s awful and needs to change for sure) but the growth of black metal/black metal adjacent music + the growth of the internet has been awesome. YouTube/merch/etc is a great way to grow a fan base and make extra money. There are a ton of great bands that wouldn’t have a chance even in the mid to late 00s. I know there’s the concept of oh no people will jump on the trend and start making black metal because it’s popular now but that’s literally not a thing. I’m down with anything that could lead to more money for musicians for their art. Anyway to prevent this from becoming a dumb derail, pyf hidden gems of 2019. Modern commercialized poseur trash doesn't fly with me. I prefer guitars to sound like chainsaws ripping through writhing flesh; vocals to sound like Baphoment Himself peeling the skin from burning believers; drums to be the damning pulse of stakes being driven through false prophets' limbs. I want lyrics scribed on smoldering bibles in Christian blood, uttering phrases of unspeakable repulsion. Metal music should not be pretty, should not be palatable; metal should be vile, scraped from the fathomless depths of human depravity. I don’t give a poo poo what genre I’m listening to or how successful the artist is, as long as I’m enjoying myself. Being overly concerned about that nonsense actually seems rather ridiculous. If we are going to play by those rules then anything other than Mayhem, Darkthrone, and Burzum is copy cat poser poo poo. Is it not? That said, now that I’m old I find it hard to even listen to metal unless it’s a wall of noise written explicitly to summon forth Our Lord Satan. There will continue to be good new music sprouting up somewhere regardless. I'm tired, I could be missing the point entirely. For instance, I read this a few months ago and it made me smile. I think it's this kind of scene that fosters new genres, and in this case they are doing it with an eye on the past. Black metal is not the economy and fans aren't some limited resource being hoarded by the wealthy. Grand Nokkturnal Panzershit's debut wasn't overlooked because Batushka was stealing their listeners, it was overlooked because it's not palatable music and/or they're not good at marketing it. If it's the former, who gives a poo poo because they're clearly not in it for the money. If it's the latter, well, sucks for them but that's what happens. Regardless, GNP should be pretty loving stoked that Batushka is doing well because they're dragging a whole lot of new ears one step closer to listening to their music. These bands are not competing with each other and unless someone is a hyper-elitist neckbeard who thinks music loses it's purity when more than six people have heard it, there is no reason to be mad at a band's success.

This is entirely DIY so I don’t have any means to get it into a streaming service without paying through the butt on some exploitative sounding aggregator. You can always stream it through the bandcamp or soundcloud apps I guess. Edit: gently caress it, shoved it through an aggregator and should, approval pending, be heading to all your favourite shopfronts whenever they let me know. This may be because I really really liked the higher tempo parts. With a Stroke of My Black Brush: Great track as a title track should be. Unlike Distance the slower parts appealed to me greatly in this one. Very second wave sound but with decent sound quality; exactly what I look for in the genre. A Princess, Fallen: Fantastic. Would have also been worthy of the EP title. Dripping with venom. Beloved Worm Wrangler: Immediately intriguing from the beginning of the track (even from before due to the name) through to the end. The slow crescendo at about 2:50 is understated but very enjoyable. About 3:50 onward is some of the best material in the EP. Possibly the best track on the EP, I'd have to give the whole thing more listening to make an opinion. Seasons Past: I like the sharper tones in this one a hell of lot. My only complaint is it's just 3 minutes long! I was like "what do you mean it's over?!" Great album. Take my $6.66. A must for my collection. Thank you for sharing.
