Sail when it's windy

Got out in the back country for my first real skiing since December 25th... It was great. Total bluebird day, snow softened just enough. Of course I slipped and fell on my shoulder in the parking lot... But it wasn't too bad so on we went. Only did one run, the skinning was a bit tough, but I would have loved a second one. Here is some photos and a vid.

Skied a 25k classic “race” this weekend, probably my last cross country ski this year because now it’s bullshit 40 degrees.

Went dressed as a hot dog and took shots in the middle though.

Spent Tuesday-Sunday at Meadows as part of rad team of humans running State Finals for Oregon high school snowboarding. Holy gently caress was it a perfect 5 days on Hood. For practice on Tuesday we had storm conditions with variable visibility, I took 5 or 6 laps in the afternoon after things had started to accumulate hitting some gullies that trap wind deposits pretty well. Those were fun turns. Woke up Wednesday for banked slalom day to a foot of fluffy new. That was great, however banked slalom day means I spend most of my time in a shack at bottom of course pushing buttons. I did get 4 short laps in though. Started with MHX to bottom of course via the Tunnel of Love to drop my pack. I was showing our southern league president some lines and we were numbers 2 and 3 through there. Then we abused our "credentials" and took 3 laps on the closed course while the gates finished getting set. There is quite a bit of area around the actual course that is roped off, so we'd just move a little to either side of our previous tracks. Thursday through Sunday were all perfect bluebird spring conditions for boardercross, slopestyle and pipe. I staved off sunburn and although I was tired as gently caress, I was never really hungover after Charlie's each night.

And now my "obligations" are done and I can start just driving up to ride. It's going to be a drat good spring.

Lastly, this kid was a freshman when my son was a senior on their team. He always was a ripper, but some added muscle mass and more time on snow has him on next level poo poo. He took first for both slope and pipe. Then went and put this line down on the big section of jumps in the Vista park. I had taken a quick lap and was lucky enough to be right next to that hit on the chair then run before. It is so loving big.

Consider instead the Mt Bohemia season pass. Yes, you can only use it for limited days at select mom & pop hills, and yes your money is going to a rich failson who is a jerk and won't use it to fix his drat lifts, but it's only $120, those places are rad, they have 0% overlap with Vail/Ikon/Mtn. Collective, you'll never stand in a lift line, and you get your money's worth in less than two ski days no matter where you use it.

Jesus, I'm in Western Canada and I want one of those just for the three days at Whitefish. 3 days at Whitefish is like $220.

We get 3 days at Whitefish with a Meadows pass. It's an easy overnight train ride from Portland and I've found a ski in/out vacation rental that sleeps 12 for $400 a night. Unfortunately I'm out of available PTO with the wife when it comes to disappearing for things like snowboarding & soccer.

Yep, that's pretty much it.
St. Patrick’s Day is always good. Spent most of my day on the Bear Creek Overlook deck (we call it Revy deck because it’s at the bottom of revelation bowl:

I got there before anyone else and had a beer while watching the Texas Slip n Slide, so named because once someone falls and loses a ski they tend to go all the way down. That’s it next to the lift.

Also watched a little kid (like probably no more than eight) send this cliff band and then hit a mogul and explode on the way out. No injuries as kids are bouncy.

Before too long it was a full on party. I keep a little camp grill in the liftie shack at the bottom and as long as you give the lifties a burger/brat they’re happy to oblige.

Then I ran outta beer and headed down to the reggae concert at Gorrono. All in all a very good spring skiing day.

E: I just noticed the jeans in boots guy in that last picture lol

I don't really have work PTO either, but we can go into debt. Unfortunately with a trip to Japan in June with my daughter and my wife wanting to go to Hawaii later in the summer, there's only so much debt I can take on.

Our sick time policy is ridiculous. I get 1000 hours of sick time, but after 6 or 7 unintended absences in a year HR asks questions. However, only the first day counts as "unintended" so when I call in well because the mountain is sick, I take at least 2 and some 3 days to recover.

I am lucky enough to have a ton of PTO (as far as America goes) and I can generally take days off on short notice unless there is a coverage SNAFU. But I get 5 weeks paid vacation, 4 additional "mental health" days that are essentially vacation days, 12 sick days, all state holidays, as well as 2 more "floating holidays" (one for the summer months and another around Christmas). The pay here sucks but at least I can ride midweek pow most of the time.

Ah, I generally know the mountain well but I'm really bad at remembering the names of places. The only area that is almost completely foreign to me is S&R cliffs. I've only been back there twice; once was a bad misadventure and the other time I went with a friend who knew a good route and we had a good time.

I’ve been trying to work out what I want to buy for my first board, so I rented out a couple but now I want em all :ohdear:

The Niche Pyre is a really sharp carver, I could just pick a line and lean wayyyy over with no drama at all. Super stable and planted ride, but pretty stiff for dipping through trees. Wanted to ride it all day

But then I rode a Salomon First Call and it’s such a goofy, fun, floaty board that now I’m torn

They have really similar strengths and weaknesses, so if you like them both, you really can't go wrong with either.

EDIT: Speaking of Meadows, does anyone have a clue what the "Sahale" announcement they're teasing is? https://www.skihood.com/resort-services/sahale

quote:

Announcing - the most significant improvement at Mt. Hood Meadows this century. A venture that will substantially improve our resort experience, by addressing critical spacial needs for the comfort and enrichment of our guests.

Details will be released Friday, March 22.

There will be a limited offering providing you, our most loyal guest, the opportunity to be a part of our future.

Sounds like timeshare BS or something. Maybe a timeshare resort somewhere near Meadows (Gov Camp? Parkdale?) with a dedicated bus service to get people to Meadows? A Gondola is too pie in the sky. It doesn't sound like it's related to opening more terrain or anything like that.

EDIT 2: It must be related to this: https://www.bizjournals.com/portland/blog/sbo/2016/03/mt-hood-meadows-inches-closer-to-land-swap-that.html and https://www.hoodrivernews.com/news/trump-signs-mt-hood-land-swap-legislation/article_32f556c0-82ec-5f4d-a251-b469b153c962.html

Hopefully it doesn't suck. I don't mind more lodging up there, but timeshares are gross.

EDIT 3: It could also be the additional day lodge connected to the south lodge they have been considering. The language of the teaser doesn't make a lot of sense for that to be the thing, though.

Be careful out there man. I don't like to be the armchair online backcountry safety police and it looks like your tour was pretty mellow. But there are massive, historic, 100 and 300 year landscape changing avalanches popping off all over the place lately. The kind of slides that can trigger remotely and get you even if you're in a "safe zone" under normal conditions.

Here's what CAIC is saying:

quote:

If you do chose to move into steeper terrain, you need to understand that the weak layers are buried so deeply that you will not see signs of instability such as cracking or collapsing. Snowpack tests will give you little meaningful feedback. There is no way to tell if a slope is safe right now. The decision to ride in avalanche terrain near and above treeline comes down to your risk tolerance. Know that if you trigger an avalanche it will break deep, will break across terrain features, will run to the valley floor, and will most likely be unsurvivable.

I hear you there. We had 4 230kv structures destroyed near keystone last weekend. CDOT dropped bombs on 9 paths this weekend so we could safely get back in there. I was working hard to keep them out of there until we had professional help. Thankfully people trust me...

This tour was pretty mellow, maybe touched 27 degrees. We are pretty risk adverse, especially in Colorado. Appreciate the thoughts though. We saw people in places I personally would not have got close to though. And met people heading up in the parking lot when we got back with no avalanche gear at all...

I am looking forward to spring couloir season though and mostly trying to get fit and used to being at 12-14k feet.

And here is a picture of the slide that took out out towers. The red is the crown line. Not as big as the ridiculous one in Aspen but still pretty crazy.

I know some Oregoons were posting about Meadows earlier. I found the full size background images they were using and it is very clear that it is another lodge, between the Providence Hospital building and the existing lodge ski school area.

Picture showing it connecting to ski school:

Picture showing walking bridge:

Also, something cool to note, is that in Timberline Lodge's master development plan they are going to build a new lodge at the base of Molly's lift that will have a snow play area, a tubing area, and about 400 more parking spots. It will be called Molly's Portal. It is detailed on pages 63 and 64 of the below pdf:

So, all in all, exciting time for us Oregoons!

That would be great! I come from The Dalles so Meadows is closer to me and my preferred resort, compared to Timberline. On the weekends they run the free bus I tend to take it, it works out really well. Next year I am probably going to have my son on one of the ski/riding teams though so will have to be up there too early for the bus.

PM me and I will show you my tits
So I just got back from Pyeongchang in Korea, where the wife and I spent a few nights at the YongPyong Resort.

Natural snow is super limited there, in particular because we went so late in the season (I think they close this week). But they more than made up for it with their snowmaking effort, which resulted in 100% coverage and powdery conditions during the first half of the day.

The slushiness was pretty unpleasant with how warm it got on afternoon 1 and our awkward rental boards, but fortunately they close the mountain at 5pm every day until 7 to groom everything. Night riding was a blast, and went till 10pm, though during peak season they apparently don't close until 4am.

One thing really striking about the mountain is how controlled and orderly everything is. You greet and bow to the attendants at both the bottom and top of all the lifts, who help you on and off every time. Unfortunately this also means the runs are fenced, there's not a tree run to be had and going off piste is nigh-impossible.

But the runs are long, and incredibly fun when the powder is right, with epic views of the ocean and the mountain hamlets that make up Pyeongchang.

There's only one terrain park and it was closed both days we were there, so I wouldn't count on many park laps, especially late in the season.

We didn't try the Alpine Technical slopes, which they used for the down hill events at the Olympics, but there's still one run from the top of the gondola that takes you from the peak to the base over 5.6km. None of the blacks we did were particularly challenging, but they were definitely fun to hit in the powder.

Apres-ski isn't really a thing in Korea, and signs are everywhere warning that you can't drink before skiing, though the lower lodges still sell beer. In the end it seemed like more of a liability thing, as long as you were discreet it was fine. The two hour rest/grooming period was actually pretty great and as close as you're probably gonna get to Euro/American apres-ski.

The resort is attached to a couple of shopping/restaurant plazas which make for a pretty convenient stay. All in all, we're definitely going to make it back, hopefully at mid-season when the scene is more happening.
