how could china do this to africa

this is actually pretty misleading: in a way that does not do justice to China's African anti-imperialist mutual assistance program, Cameroon for instance owes around 1/3 of its debt to China (much has now being forgiven).

But the more Chinese so called "debt", the better since they are getting the loan on much better terms than from neoliberal IMF. Also, repayment will keep the money in circulation within anti-imperialist bloc rather than being appropriated by international capital used for further oppression. Money will used by CPC for further development of productive forces, building of socialism in Africa for mutual benefit of both Chinese and African working classes.

China got a PLA base in Djibouti on the Bab-el-Mandeb straight near a US base thanks to belt and road; it's a great way to keep an eye on international commerce, gives them force projection in Africa, and lets them keep an eye on an important US base on the region. It's a massive win for Xi on all fronts for what is otherwise an extremely small upfront payment.

Which frankly is mutually beneficial and probably benefits Djibouti more than China. USA historically have used coup and dictators to impose capitalism and control Africa and Latin America. A Chinese base, built and maintained at great cost to the Chinese people, demonstrates China's commitment to protecting the African working class from neoliberal US imperialism.

Imagine if today, comrade Maduro had a PLA tank division in Venezuela who are well trained in armored warfare vs invading mercenaries and suppressing counter-revolutionary elements! USA would never dare to mount a coup as they are doing now!

BBC posted:

The death toll in a huge blast at a chemical plant in eastern China has jumped to 47, with 90 badly injured, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Many neighbouring factories inside the industrial park caught fire after the explosion.

China's earthquake administration reported a tremor equivalent to 2.2-magnitude at the time of the blast.

The death toll makes it one of the country's worst industrial accidents in recent years.

The blast happened at about 14:50 local time (06:50 GMT) on Thursday at a plant in Yancheng, run by Tianjiayi Chemical.

According to Xinhua, a total of 640 people were sent to hospital. Many were in critical condition and dozens had severe injuries, the agency reports.

Images of the site showed a fireball exploding, billowing clouds enveloping the area, injured people, and damage to buildings.

The blast was so powerful that it knocked down factory buildings some distance away, trapping workers, according to local media.

Staff at the Henglida Chemical Factory, 3km (1.8 miles) from the explosion, said its roof collapsed as they fled, and windows and doors were blown out.

Provincial authorities said firefighters had to be brought in from across the province.

The fire was brought under control at around 03:00 local time on Friday, state TV said.

One woman, who gave her surname as Xiang, said she had been concerned about safety and pollution levels at the plant for some time.

"We knew we'd be blown up one day," said told AFP.

Reuters quoted local officials as saying there had been no abnormalities detected at the site before the blast, but that the province would be conducting emergency inspections of other chemical producers and warehouses.

Industrial accidents ranging from factory fires to mining disasters are common in China, often due to poorly enforced safety standards.

The biggest accident in recent years was the August 2015 Tianjin explosion, which killed more than 160 people and injured nearly 1,000.

The exact cause of Thursday's explosion is still under investigation. Tianjiayi Chemical, founded in 2007, has received six government penalties in the past over waste management and air pollution, according to the South China Morning Post.

President Xi Jinping has called for an "all-out effort" to aid the injured and said authorities must learn lessons from the blast prevent future accidents.

I have been listening to a lot more Europe news streams recently (DW, French24, Skynews, not BBC because the old farts don't make it accessible online). There are a lot more discussion of Bell and Road on Europe news than US. The US news outlet only cares about Huawei tariff Huawei.

When you think about it, Huawei is a (proxy) military competition. B&R is a trade competition.

Hey all,

So... some corrections and further explanations.

It was a government official who ordered the print run destroyed; it's not like Xi Jinping took notice and said destroy it. So it is true and correct to say that this was a government action. But in all likelihood, it was a dumbass local official who got nervous when he saw certain images inside the book.

I had at times said the book was burned, but probably the book was pulped. I misunderstood the salesman who talked to me about it and I got an idea stuck in my mind. And as others have pointed out, burning is the proper response because that is how you deal with books that contain dangerous secret ;-)

We got our money back. We will have a new printer by the end of the week. Backers will get the book. And for backers that did not get the PDF, please send me message via Kickstarter to let me know.

Some have asked what content the Chinese official found sensitive. The Sassoon Files contains photographic images of Zhou Enlai, Chiang Kai-shek, Empress Dowager Cixi, Big Eared Du, and other historical figures. It contains images of Mythos monsters, including an incarnation of a god which appears to have nipples. It contains images of the flag of the Republic of China; that flag is shown on TV in historical TV show, but it's also the flag of the Republic of China on Taiwan. It has a fake historical poster of PLA soldiers fighting the good fight against Cthulhu. In it's textual content, it includes story-elements of time travel, reincarnation, interactions with Christian cultists (or Christians who think they are Christian but are worshiping something else), possession, alien serial murderers, and world-ending plagues (that originate in China).

So there is a little bit of content that would make the Chinese government official nervous about allowing this to be published in China through official distribution channels. But this did not matter in the past nor should have mattered now because the book was made for export and in the past that was not checked.

I'd think so. Making a dot is harder to do with a brush compared to a quill or pen. Doing the motion one would use to make a period ends up resembling a comma rather than a period.
