So, I just got out of the Last Podcast on the Left live show, and in the middle of it the Bruiser Brody story was told to the crowd. Ben Kissel (one of the hosts) also has a bullet club shirt design he was selling. It was interesting.

Saw Avengers Infinity War, while not as awful as Age of Ultron, I didn't care for it. I felt for the material they were presenting, it really lacked a bunch of impact. The guardians spots were fave thing of the movie. Thanos was an unimaginative dork. I bet it was probably fun to see in the theater with a bunch of fans. Also signed up for that DC Universe thing for a free trial and am currently binging the poo poo out Titans. Its gets really absurd with the grim dark but intentionally so. The lady playing Starfire is absolutely wonderful. Dick Grayson: MurderCop is kinda roll eyes in spots but again, I feel like that's the point. Gar and the Doom Patrol cameos were sold me on their series as well. It's also Midwest as gently caress so that's a big point to me as well. Raven starts out like every single parent household goth gf except the moody music.

Thor Ragnarok was so good. It's a shame Taika Waititi cant direct every superhero movie. Having the director of What We Do In The Shadows (my favorite movie of the last few years) do a superhero movie is a move I never thought marvel would make but I'm so glad they did. I never cared for the first few Thor movies but Ragnarok is now up there with my favorites. Its legit on all fronts - an exciting action movie, a well made superhero movie and a very funny comedy.

Flight Of The Conchords and The Inbetweeners as well - I'm a fan of pretty much anything he's directed. Also casting Jeff Goldblum as a Villain and basically letting him be as weird as he wants to be was also an amazing move.

Infinity War landed with a thud for me the first time, then I sat on it for a bit, watched it again and I was like y'know what, that was actually kinda really good. I sorta wanna see it one more time before Endgame to see what I think after a year.

2001 I'd say is his best (it also blows me away it was made in the loving 1960s, it was made BEFORE the moon landings for gently caress's sake), but in terms of favorites for me the atmosphere of The Shining just can't be beat.

Us was absolutely amazing. My wife and our friends spent two hours discussing the movie in the bar afterwards and I'd have no problems seeing it a second time to see what all I missed. And a sign of a good horror movie - when a song (or songs in this case) is forever associated with it (see "Stuck in the Middle With You" from Reservoir Dogs or "Total Eclipse of the Heart" from The Strangers: Prey At Night).

I'd have to agree, and I'll even go so far as to say that I rate Kubrick's film version far higher than the Stephen King book it was based on. I think King hates the film because he views the book as sort of autobiographical: alcoholic writer struggling with the demands of marriage, being a parent, and having to work a lovely manual labor job for lovely bosses, all of which Kubrick largely jettisons. There are elements of all those things in the movie, to be sure, but at the end of the day I think it's honestly that Kubrick didn't film what King thought he should film, and that's why he's so dismissive of it (and he's probably not the best judge of what should go into a film, either; David Cronenberg said he rejected a script by King for The Dead Zone because it was full of exactly the kinds of things King fans would have torn the movie apart over if he'd used the script). I like all of Kubrick's work, really, but the only one of his I can't rewatch is Full Metal Jacket. Mainly because it came out shortly before I went into the military myself, so every jagoff trainee squad leader in basic thought they were being funny by re-enacting Gunnery Sergeant Hartman's dialogue, which as you can imagine got very old very fast (and we weren't even in the Marines, fer chrissake).

Yeah I was always sad that King didn't like the film - his book is very good with a not particularly great ending (typical King, really) but the movie outshines it, no pun intended. It did lead to some wonderful stories from King about his relationship with Kubrick though. Two of my favorite stories (paraphrased) are: 1. Kubrick telling King that he (King) didn't know what the book he wrote was actually about, telling him what he thought it was about and King getting mad at him but then stopping, thinking and going,"....poo poo, I think he's right..." 2. Kubrick calling King at like 3 in the morning and asking him if he believes in God. King said he did, the phone was silent for like 10 seconds then Kubrick slowly intones,"....no. No there is no God" and hangs up on him.
