When you run the MCT, are you building the media?

yeah i tried literally everything under the sun and then poo poo from the 10th page of google and nothing worked. when I run MCT I just hit update, it throws the exact same error. creating the media and trying to update from that too. only thing left to try now is unplug all the disks except windows ssd and try again.

i'm not particularly worried either way tho since the only thing that happens on this box is playing games, and i'll be reinstalling windows when i upgrade my pc later this year anyway..

Did you already do the SFC cycle just to make sure nothing is hosed (sfc /scannow)?

Can you explain where it exactly it fails? Is it like from the windows update panel, you click download and it does the download and the pre install and fails with the error code there? Or does the reboot start and the install fails at the blue update screen?

If it gets to the install step, do you have the setup logs? (check c:\$windows.bt\sources\panther\setuperr.log [or whatever your os drive letter is])

Are you a windows insider? Could also help to capture advanced diagnostics (feedback hub->advanced diag->default diag/install and update/windows update/windows update (default)->start capture. Then submit a feedback report and link the details here so I can try and ping someone internally for a hint to get you unstuck.

Beyond 720p? Did Microsoft implement a new rendering backend with appropriate protections that satisfies Netflix? Because they sure don't seem to be content with Widevine on Chrome or Firefox.

Dunno really. Set it to the highest setting in the account profile and it took all my bandwidth (16mb) playing stuff. I don't see how I can say "play only 1080p" from the settings.

If Chromium Edge supports syncing tabs and passwords with my phone and G-mail account I might consider it. Instead, I predict it will probably be tied into having a Microsoft account and that is simply not going to happen, my soul is Google's property damnit!

But I do hope Chromium Edge might just implement some sort of DRM that Chrome and Firefox can use to get higher resolution. I cant see MS wanting another silverlight style plugin, and I hope if they develop the necessary DRM for Chromium it will be back ported. Realistically, what are the odds of MS back porting any improvements to Chromium? Is MS actually trying to be a more open source friendly company these days? Will Chromium Edge effect the Netflix store plugin since I assume that requires either the Edge or IE rendering engine?

To be honest, I don't really care about RAM, I have 32 GB in my machine and it never gets annoying. The one thing that does get annoying is Google making Chrome subservient to their ad business with the proposed changes to the webrequest API and the auto-login stuff. No thanks.

there's also how extensions aren't allowed on the webstore if they would allow a user to download video from youtube. not as in a way to protect the revenue of streaming sites, because they'll download from everywhere else, just "if it does our one you're not allowed in our store"

Don't know when the last time you used Firefox was, but it's made significant strides in terms of performance over the last couple of years. Of course, some of this was thanks to changes that broke compatibility with a lot of old add-ons, but old add-ons usually were the reason for performance tanking anyways.

CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-D shows an overlay with debug info. There's a Playing Bitrate line that also shows current streaming resolution. Max bandwidth might just have been prebuffering.

I'll switch if Chredge has the tab mute feature that was removed from Chrome a few versions ago (and the flag to re-enable it is now gone in the latest Beta version as well). I hate hunting for mute buttons.

It's not gone. Unless they removed it from the beta channel or something? On Chrome 73.0.3683.86

Tab mute is still there on Canary v75 for me. Clicking on the speaker icon doesn't do anything (didn't that used to toggle mute?) but right clicking on the tab still has "Mute site" in the menu.

That's site mute, not tab mute. Site mute mutes all tabs with that site open (all YouTube videos, for example). Tab mute just mutes that individual tab. The latter is useful, the former (site mute) is pretty much useless to me. No other browser works like this, really don't know wth the Chrome developers are thinking.

What? No, the "Quantum" project has been in the mainline firefox releases since late 2018. Anyone using a standard current release of Firefox, both the normal one (v66) and the ESR long-term support version (v60) are getting the Quantum renderer and script engine.

Maybe it's because I started using the 64-bit builds a long time ago but it was keeping me on some other long term branch and I only noticed when I hit the mozilla website and they redirected me because of the agent string and told me to upgrade to quantum: the future. Did a manual install and it jumped a whole mess of release versions.

If you manually installed an extended-support release version of Firefox then no it would not update the main version for many, many releases. That one's already on Firefox 60 (which is an earlier Quantum release), and it is upgrading to 68 in July. Meanwhile, the regular version of Firefox is up to 66.

Lambert posted:

Apparently it is also because they are afraid of user dataloss since it is so close to the tab close button. Additionally they felt it caused the code to be too complex and caused performance issues. The first issue isn't one because the only time i want to mute a tab is when I am not on that tab; and in those cases I only see the mute button, no close button. This additionally is a great thing to have available because it quickly allows you to see which tab is causing the sound issues. The code complexity and performance excuse tho just takes it to a whole new level, because how loving poo poo does your codebase have to be for a mute tab function to be a problem for either.
