I mean, it's basically "What if I got into a fanatsy world just like my video games, but with modern knowledge??? I'D BE KING!!!" so they know their audience.

A media property being a power fantasy? I can’t believe anime was the first to come up with such a concept.

Crispin Freeman hosted an Awful Voice Acting In Anime panel at a con once and Exhibit A in his mock reel was Garzy’s Wing. He didn’t even have to show any clips of it, the second he said the name people already started laughing because they’d heard of it from Spoony and Sage.

The only good modern isekai is the one where the main character is a retired old knight in a remote farming village who keeps having to deal with anime protagonists dropping into his universe and doing dumb anime bullshit in his home

When I found out it was directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino a lot of things about the show suddenly made sense, befirw it raised several more questions.

Before. It's basically the kind of show he makes when he's given no budget and three episodes. So things get kind of crazy. You can't fault the guy for creativity.

this sounds fun, what is it?

anyways re:zero is the only isekai i've seen that i'd really go to bat for (at least based off what's in the anime); like there's still power fantasy elements but the lead gets called out for his lovely behaviors and the poor shithead gets so, so, so traumatized

The slime one is pretty good from what I've read of the comic. The power fantasy aspect is still there in spades but the protagonist is mostly concerned with making a socialist utopia for marginalized people than anything else, so it's got a nice feel good aspect to it.

I think another thing he fails to mention is that if they really want to play the game they'll just pirate it. It takes more effort to set up an epic account than it does to boot into whatever tracker you have and grab a copy of metro or outer worlds or w/e, and Epic has said they're covering lost sales so it's like you're not even pirating at all!

Like that was part of what made Steam successful in the first place: it was significantly easier than pirating, so why the gently caress not go with it?

I swear, video games capitalists are the worst capitalists because they don't even know how to sell well. They only manage to make money because the gamer population includes a significant chunk of the stupidest motherfuckers on the planet, apparently.

Gabe newell himself said that to beat piracy you have to give customers a better service, aka, something more convenient and with more value than piracy.

My favorite part of the sordid Epic Game Store saga is how the Steam Spy guy, who painted his service as a noble endeavor giving indie devs important metrics that Valve wouldn't provide, was actually working for Epic and of course once EGS launched promptly said like hell would he be sharing any kind of data about that.
