Isn't Overlord basically the isekai anime everyone's describing, where it's like, I Got Transported into My Dying MMO Game, but I Realized I'm Not a Good Fighter/Wizard, so I Have To Use My Mid-Level Office Management/Salary Man Skills to Survive!

Kinda. It's not actually the same MMO world, his guild's fortress, The Tomb of Nazarick (and everything in it), are just somehow in a different fantasy world where most of the same rules apply for magic along with all the legions of absolutely-loyal NPC characters and minions his guild created as guardians and assistants. He's mostly plotting World Domination using his MMO PvP experience rather than anything drawn from his actual life in the real world (he was part of the top guild in the game for the Evil faction), and trying to do things very cautiously just in case there are other players in the "new" world with him on par with what he's capable of as a max-level Sorcerer with a cache of raid drops, crafted items, and holiday toys. That and a healthy dose of "uh... yes, that's exactly my plan!" when his core advisors start making guesses at what his next step is because he's flying by the seat of his pants on the whole World Domination thing. The World Domination thing's also a long-term way to try and see if there are actually any other players in the world with him by flying the banner of his old game guild as their flag.

It's very good and well worth a watch if you just want a straight fantasy show, because it does not pull punches about the main characters faction basically being Lawful Evil. They won't just go killing civilians for fun, mostly because the protagonist says not to, but when they're working to a goal a lot of secondary characters die ignominiously and horribly. The show also likes to set aside a few mini-arcs across an episode or two following nice groups of people who're generally just trying to get by as Adventurers, or soldiers for the King's army, and they all often end in "and then they got in the way of someone from the Tomb of Nazarick :gibs:".

Season 2 drags a bit as it focuses a little too much on secondary characters from the Tomb, but Season 3 has really picked up again and it goes places :magical:.

I'd love to see an Isekai subvert it's central power fantasy and just have the character fail.

So many of these Isekai feature people who are, supposedly, losers in the real world. But coming to the fantasy world they suddenly turn into action heroes. The implication seeming that their past lives were miserable because the world was keeping them down. I'd want to see an Isekai where the ultimate outcome is that the character just continues being a loser and gets confronted with the fact that coming to another world did nothing to change that, and that the only way for them to actually improve their lives is to work on themselves.

i never understood the out and out hatred of power fantasy from some critics. like sure of them have pretty problematic elements(depending on the writer and the politics) and its not realistic at all, but humanity loves their uber powerful heroes since the beginning. critique it is fine and good but the out and out "it bad and needs to go" is loving dumb. i dont see anything wrong with something like captain america or BJ blazkowicz loving up tons of nazis. as someone who has to use a wheelchair alot, the whole beginning of TNC was loving awesome as power fantasy, followed by power armor stomping fascists.

I'd rather not have a subversive anime because they inevitably spawn a thousand imitators that flood the market with schlock trying and failing to ape what made the trendsetter good to begin with. It's too much to ask for without completely dismantling the industry, I know. I'd rather people try new things and push boundaries than to copy what is popular, but it won't happen.

No subversive anime cause its the go to excuse for any of them who do things that people take umbrage with, IE this one about a girl who wants to gently caress her brother (BUT WHAT ELSE IS NEW IN THE ANIME UNIVERSE HAAHAHAHAHA) but its a parody of those things as it constantly sexualizes the brother sister incest.

Between Doom and Goblin Slayer? Yeah, it’s depressing.

My point was that you should never underestimate the credulity and incuriousness of nerds. Dark Souls was the kernel which lead to GS and is a great example of what results from uncritically copying an aesthetic without understanding any of the themes. Also you didn't have to google for an example, I'm obviously aware that there are a non-zero number of people who hate literally any movie, but you were the one who complained about people complaining, I figured you had an example ready to go

This is basically Grimgar, although only one supporting character is really dragging around a big sense of wounded protagonist entitlement. The protagonists' first goblin-hunting expedition (translation: a bunch of inept, inexperienced teenagers trying to mug and murder another sentient being so they can get enough money to eat) is going to stick with me for a long time.

Sonny Chiba as the yakuza leader in Tokyo Drift is the best casting in the whole franchise. Tokyo Drift also is great because it's the only one where our main character isn't good at driving at first (well, he's bad at drifting, he's good at normal driving), so he gets to have a Rocky style montage of learning to drift and it owns.

ETA like I just hear this song and get loving pumped, that's how good Tokyo Drift is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuJDhFRDx9M

I can't not put Toyko Drift on top because there is a scene where the non-character love interest says to 30 year old teenager main character that she didn't mind basically being owned by the Yakuza forever and her mother being sold for sexual favours, cause when you drift it's all good, and it's played straight. That and it has Han, It's just equally tryhard serious and just asking you to go with all of it, and Bow-Wow is perfect in the role.
