Samsung Internet is Chrome with adblocking extensions, it's great. And available for all devices (not just Samsung) through the Play Store.

I upgraded to 1809 recently. Since then, every time the computer boots I get a message in the notification center saying there's a problem with my Microsoft account. No real info, just "there's a problem".
I use a local account, so I'm not sure what it's complaining about. The only thing tied to my Microsoft account is the mail app and that works completely fine.

Anyone got a clue what that could be? Google'ing "there's a problem with my microsoft account" doesn't really give any useful info.

Hit the Start button and type Start and there should be a Startup Apps setting. See if Excel is in there. Otherwise you can do a repair install and see if that fixes it.

I've installed the leaked build, and it lists PlayReady DRM in the experimental flags, so they've added the necessary DRM.

However, Netflix doesn't work in that build here. :[

UI looks nice, tho. I guess I can go back to a Chromium browser. Stock Chrome's pill style and lack of contrast edges on elements pisses me off.

I honestly wouldn't be annoyed at it if Windows had just told me the issue was OneDrive. It's still dumb, but the problem would have been gone quickly.
But who thinks just telling the user "There's a problem" is good design? I honestly got nothing from windows to indicate the problem was OneDrive.

My suspicion about that error message isn't that it's a growth tactic but in actually a lack of effort in coordination between the Defender team and the OneDrive team - nobody bothered to tell the Defender team how to properly notify the user about error XYZ, so they just slapped on a generic message and called it a day.

DCH drivers work fine, seems like a good concept.

For Intel Graphics, they now have a new "Graphics Command Center" that will replace their existing utility in the future: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/intel-graphics-command-center/9plfnlnt3g5g?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

I have no problems with the concept. The bullshit that I'm talking about are device vendors either mislabeling drivers, not providing updated drivers, and/or Windows pitching a fit for no good reason at all.

For me some updates have pushed OneDrive, some don't.

The last couple updates have not reinstalled it, but for that to work you had to fully uninstall OneDrive, not just disable it.

As of November 2018, driver updates for Intel products on these operating systems will begin transitioning to Windows DCH Drivers. After a driver has been updated to a Windows DCH Driver, it's possible to roll back to a legacy driver; however, rolling back isn't recommended as it involves a complex process that could result in system instability. This system instability is especially pertinent to graphics drivers. You can find more information on this subject.

You can switch back, you just have to manually uninstall the DCH driver and then install the standard one, rather than use a rollback or the friendly "double-click an exe" installer. Like you stepped back in time to 2004 when we had to do that every time we upgraded drivers.

DCH drivers are not a thing anyone needs to worry about. They're not mandatory and standard driver packages aren't going away. It's a MS initiative that's actually full of good design principles, except for the part where MS wants everyone to use UWP app control panels.

DCHU drivers are probably gonna be encouraged by MS to the OEMs selling PCs, because having some actual standards means drivers can be automatically maintained easier. Driver updates being done by random poorly-secured OEM apps has proven to be a bad thing recently. It's a good thing that MS is gonna make them ditch that poo poo and just use MS update to do drivers.

Power users can continue to pave over your PC after you take it out of the box and install standard drivers that you maintain yourself.

TBF, I wasn't sure given past experience with Intel if this was a particular problem with DCH or with Intel's DCH drivers in specific. Both seemed believable.

So... use the up to date driver? And turn off windows automatic driver updates if you want to manage it yourself?

DCH isn't some sort of totally different driver, it's just a different packaging. Nvidia has both DCH and standard and it's the same driver on the inside. If Intel has only DCH then it is just "the Intel driver".

I don't know what this is, but I'm against it!

Well I mean you said standard driver packages aren't going away so people don't need to deal with DCH, I was giving an example where they have and you do? And Intel's own advice is

quote:

After a driver has been updated to a Windows DCH Driver, it's possible to roll back to a legacy driver; however, rolling back isn't recommended as it involves a complex process that could result in system instability. This system instability is especially pertinent to graphics drivers.

so they seem to think it's a bit more complicated than "it's the same driver it just comes in a different package", so the average user isn't going to want to deal with whatever rolling back involves

So yeah, if you upgrade and it's all good, cool? If it's not, you might have problems. My OEM Intel graphics drivers seem to get released on a yearly basis, the last one was a month ago but the actual driver version is pretty old. If I want to just update to a newer one, I'll have to change over to a DCH version, because that's all they have now. But what if there are issues? What if it doesn't play well with Optimus or the OEM colour management software? What if rolling back ends up a nightmare, I regret even trying, and things are still messed up because I can't get everything back to the original state?

Nah it's 7th gen and there are a good year or two of updates, I'm just real leery about installing a non-OEM driver I can't roll back reliably (and not because Dell don't gently caress up, more because even they manage to run into issues with this, really don't want to tempt fate)
