Yeah that was the reason why when I played TF2 I never wanted to pay to open the loot crates. Also because I was too lazy to unlock weapons for the meme build I wanted to use.

Checking youtube's list thing where you enter a song and they let you know if you can use it or not, they have a section detailing covers. Which is insane that they're giving companies power over covers.

I wonder if it's better for Theme Park video bloggers to go on the most crowded days because all the noise pollution from the crowds can drown out the licensed music they pipe into parks easier.

That's the norm for IP rights and cover songs; there's two entities, the recording (what was committed to tape) and the song (what was written). You can obtain a mechanical license to cover a song (i.e. make and sell your own recording of it) generally without the permission of the original song owners (compulsory license) but sync rights (the right to use a song alongside video) belong to the owner of the song's sync rights, and aren't given by default. So yes, you can pay an artist to make a cover of a song and sell it on your CD for a fixed rate of a few cents a copy, no permission needed, but you can't make a music video for your own cover without permission of/payment to the original songwriter (or whoever holds the rights now).

I'm not saying it's good or right, but that's YouTube following established law; nothing's changed there.

It's a quiet but apparently common practice for famous bands to cover their own greatest hits to sell to films - their original contract owner has the rights to their recording and profits off the cover, but they retained the sync rights to the song. They give a few cents to their old contract holders for each copy sold but they get to keep the cash from the sync rights. And the best part is since the rights holders have the final say over any version of the song, they can demand their own "cover" is the one the studio picks.

So if you're ever listening to a song you know very well from a movie and you're like "that's weird, it sounds a bit different than the one I know, wonder why?" it's probably that.

Something I've noticed in twitch communities and youtube channels dedicated to fortnite is that "Default Skin" players are very often the subject of mockery. Playing with the default skin is associated with being bad at the game, being a little kid or being someone who can barely even handle third-person controls. And literally every skin besides the default one has a monetary value attached to it.

if you're asking if it's wrong to target hardcore players by enabling them to subscribe to your service for additional benefits, then no.
i mean, yes it's wrong because capitalism is by its function predatory and oppressive, but not significantly above the regular background wrong of capitalism is my long answer.

but that's not in any way an accurate description of how they target players, hardcore or otherwise, and it's a little frightening that you can (or presumably have) watch as dan engages and displays every moving part of the lemarchand lootbox into its full configuration and yet still come out the other side saying that there are, in fact, no sights to be shown.

Here's a longer bit about the practice. Most keep it quiet; Def Leppard made it public knowledge they were doing it as a middle finger to their old label, but it's definitely a thing: https://slate.com/culture/2013/05/re-recordings-runaway-and-other-classic-songs-redone-in-the-studio-can-we-stop-this-trend.html

Surprise surprise, newer contracts prevent bands from pulling this stunt.

I dread April Fool's Day because more and more people take the day to announce outrageous actual news but the joke is that it's not actually a joke. Doug Ford announced that he's changing the license plate tagline in Ontario from "Yours to Discover" to "Open for Business" which is so stupidly petty that it has to be an April Fool's joke, except no, he really is that self absorbed and petty.

This was the case in TF2 as well after it became free, people would use F2P (free to play) as a derogative against people without cosmetics and assume they were dead weight in the team. People who had the extremely rare and expensive “unusual” cosmetics that had an extremely low drop rate from loot boxes were seen as elites.

This meant that people were prioritized higher when it came to buffs and heals based on their cosmetics.

This isn't entirely true, thanks to Twitch freebies. Though rather noticeably they haven't done any of those in a while. They did also give away the current battle pass for free (if you completed a bunch of generally easy challenges) tho.

As for TF2, it was always on a continual downward slide with me but the exact moment it was truly dead to me was the moment they added killstreak weapons. That was the last little bit of "we give zero shits about a single one of the game's original design tenets, give us more money" after years of eroding them with various additions. Before that, it was kill counter weapons turning games into farm sessions. Sorry, your Medic doesn't feel like healing you, they gotta farm those frags with their stupid loving crossbow that's a terrible weapon but if they get it up to Hale's Own rank maybe they can sell it off for $5 on the Steam market so gently caress you. (And naturally, to me, this immediately devalued the entire concept of kill tracker weapons because it could very easily be assumed that anyone with Hale's Own gear just farmed pubbies in a 24/7 instant respawn 2fort server rather than earned them through any appreciable skill.)

Of course I had pretty much stopped playing because once the game went F2P suddenly weapon crafting recipes went from annoying but doable with anyone with a back stock of junk to requiring multiples of the previous new wave of weapons, which you would obviously have little to none of beyond maybe the ones you'd like to keep. All in a very obvious bid to push people to buy the new weapons, either from the in-game store or through the Steam market. And considering said new weapons were inevitably in dubious states of balance on top of being the new hotness, the whole thing turned into a gross FOMO P2W situation. (The FOMO being the bigger pressure, because after the initial rush and some weeks of dupes dropping you could generally get all of the new stuff for absolutely free from trading bots.)

Is fanfiction . net's userbase aging or is there a reasonable influx of new users and outflux of the old? I'm sure there are people who have been posting on the site for ages and never left, but has there been an uptick in more adult themes as the authors have grown and never left (and presumably improved), or is it pretty much the same as it's always been as a relatively safe space to publicly explore creative writing? I have no personal interest in the site anymore but I am interested in how it's used these days.
