The Ultraman anime has pretty mediocre CG but it's still a lot better than most CG anime because it seems to be at least partially mocapped by real actors. The MC over-acts like you'd expect a live actor do when playing a flustered highschool boy.

The downside to this is that when combined with the general premise it just looks like they took a regular sentai show and made it in really ugly CG instead.

e; also, people were unhappy with Aramaki co-directing but him being in that role has finally resulted in a CG anime that remembers that cameras can move.

For a music club (sports) anime, Koto Oto Tomare! hosed up pretty badly, they did not play the drat instrument at all in the first episode. And does not have the decency to use the koto in the OP or ED songs either.

That's by design to instead focus on the character drama. Second episode should have narrative reasons for diegetic koto music unless they majorly gently caress it up.

Cinderella Nine is going to win the Marchean Madechen award for the season by having an okay to a good story for meh but also having like the worst production. Zoomed out shots instead of action, stills instead of action, the sense of being of off model as well. Definitely the weakest production I've seen this season so far

I finished this just now and I honestly liked the older guy more than the MC. The show was kinda underwhelming, no interesting catch, but some of the action scenes were pretty drat legit. Just kind of inoffensive as a whole. I chuckled a few times.

I have no idea how Ultraman or tokusatsu fans would feel about the show since my knowledge about the series is just about limited to recognizing Ultraman's outfit.

I'm mentally comparing it to the Kabukibu anime a while back, and that one had a great enthusiastic MC doing kabuki poo poo all the time, right from the get-go. I get that they want to get some character drama going, but at least show me the MC dude cares a bit about the instrument and music he's supposedly playing, like have him hum a tune or play air koto during a bit of down time or something.

Edit: If you're making an anime about a music club, put some music-appropriate content in it. Otherwise it may as well be the tea club.

kimetsu no yaiba adaption is shaping up nicely from the first episode. there was a wee bit of bad cgi in there but they did a great job on the characters. watching it was a lot better than reading it, which is welcome since it took me a while to really get into the manga

there's what, a combined 5 seconds of cg content throughout the ep. it wasn't even bad cg, it was only used for distant shots so as not be obtrusive, and it was used for some really complex and quick movements. it's far beyond, say, goblin slayer having multiple extended scenes where the lead walks forward in the most robotic manner possible.

i think the early cg snow was a bit obtrusive but then you have that bit where cg tanjiro vaults over a log and i was like "wow, this is good actually"

also the koto thing not having music immediately seems like a very small thing to be so hung up on lol. the show has like 11-12 more episodes to get to it

i feel like they could have done more to sell the viewer on how amazing the instruments are then they did, or make the character drama more interesting than misunderstood delinquent and wimpy guy finally standing up for himself

Yeah, the log bit was good.
Him walking into town as CG was kinda bad, but it was only a few seconds. And as I said in the thread, if it means they can spend more time on the fight scenes then hell yeah.

when put in the context of a manga reader i understand it a bit more tbf, it just seemed like people were complaining apropos of nothing because the premise wasn't immediately fulfilled.

i mean it makes sense to have some taste of what the anime's gonna be about even if it's just a brief 30 second scene or something, or even it being used in the OP/ED or BGM or something. Like you don't need to dedicate a ton of time to it, but there's a reason why even slower-paced sports shows have a scene of the character watching the sport on tv or something in the first episode. Not having it at all in the first episode just tells the viewer that it isn't a priority or it isnt what the show is about. This can work with something where the base premise is some kind of twist, like Steins;Gate or something, but when its just dudes hanging out playing an instrument it sets the viewer's expectations oddly. Like imagine if Rakugo didn't have actual Rakugo in its first episode.

It's not about people demanding Koto immediately, it's about wanting to know what the show's priorities are and how it's going to handle what is ostensibly its premise. If you're looking for an anime about a thing and the show doesn't seem to care about that thing. it's pretty natural to be disappointed. The first episode is very important in setting up the viewer for what comes after.

I think that's why the few scenes where it was not good was so stark to me, like I see a bunch of really slick cg with good integration and then a few seconds of really repetitive walk animation makes my brain break.

it's def not structured like your typical club anime but the act of playing koto is pretty well centered in the show itself as well as the op/ed, even though you don't hear the music. i don't think it's at all a case of the show not caring about the instrument, but it cares more about establishing its characters and their relationship to the instrument than the act of them playing or having the music, and that's probably the expectation people should have based on the first episode. notably it has characters with pre-existing relationships to the koto (which are rather excessively detailed in the ep) so there's not really an opportunity for the expected scene of seeing [activity] and that reigniting a character's passion or motivating them to try it out. i don't think it was a flawless episode by any means but the only occasions where the koto is played are called out as bad or done by total newbies, so the lack of actual music did not surprise me and is probably better than if they led with awful music.

FWIW, the production crew apparently already has 10 episodes completely finished before the first one even aired, so they've got a very healthy buffer so far. Hopefully that means the CG won't become more intrusive down the line due to time constraints.
