There’s nothing more to say about it, but I am getting tired of their refusal to take responsibility for the gaps in their analysis that reactionaries seem to like living in. There’s not really a time for being coy, and it’s definitely not appropriate for 2019.

I don't really trust the idea that leftists should never talk about certain topics because an alt-righter might latch on to it because to me alt-righters are basically stupid little children. It's like saying we should censor all sex from books and movies because a kid might see or read something. You can't stop them, they're dumb as gently caress and they'll poo poo everywhere no matter what. The entire idea that you should never talk about certain topics because they're now alt-right topics - which grows every day - strikes me as passivity and defeatism, and I have not seen it accomplish anything.

Like look at Contrapoints, she's getting people to listen to left ideas when they otherwise would not but even she gets the constant "crypto-fash" label because she sometimes considers why people might think the way they do or has experiences that aren't 100% positive or goes on chapo or whatever. On the topics of criticizing the games industry or anime industry from the left, you just have Jim Sterling... there's two trans anime reviewers who have criticised crunchyroll. That's kind of all I know of.

If someone is thinking about the topic of representation in movies and why it does not feel satisfying and go to youtube about it, I'd much rather they get "yeah, it felt like this time it was just to make money, could've been better" than an actual alt-righter, that's just my opinion.

Leftist talking about those nuances and issues, from an explicit leftist perspective, is good! But when milquetoast, noncommital liberals like RLM talk about those issues they don't make the vital vocal & material commitments to antiracism that drive away (or change the minds of) racists. Instead, their commentary leaves room for racists and fascists to hide.

I'm kind of on edge because of a leftuber harassment case that has been on my mind. I can live with rlm being just controversial I guess. The way I read the ink blot of their opinions, having watched their content over the years, is anticorperatism but in drunk Midwestern slob language rather than breadtube language and I think that can reach people. Theyve actually praised representation a lot but I don't think it matters in this case.

They actually have at that. They sold me on Annihilation when they talked about how well the women in it were represented in that movie.

They’ve been anti corporate since inception and in their last Half in the Bag video for Captain Marvel they were even making fun of those alt right youtubers. It just feels really silly for someone to accuse them of being racists/alt right because they didn’t talk about a topic in a certain way or because they think that gives the alt right a place to hide. The truth is they’ll do that with just about any content we consume, it’s not avoidable.

I mean, at what point does people not understanding a joke become the comic's thing to 'take responsibility' for? Like, the entire joke of that 'finally a hero for white kids' bit was the multicultural foster home does literally nothing but exist as a prop, the kids there are never used for anything but a nice image which is at it's core what most of this 'finally a movie with a wealthy attractive white woman in the lead' kind of hype is treated like by the people doing it. They don't actually give a poo poo, they want the nice poster shot of a conventionally attractive white woman doing an action pose, and the director didn't give a poo poo about the multicultural foster kids, they just want the nice poster shot of our hero having a diverse group of people he is in the same room as some times.

In the late 90s/early 00s the Archie Sonic comics started out being a loose adaptation and continuation of the Sonic SatAM TV series and then went into batshit insane territory thanks to Ken Penders, who was so weird and crazy that he got fired, sued Archie for the IP rights to all the characters he'd created for the comic over his tenure there, actually won, and Archie had do a whole story arc where literally half the cast was wiped out of existence Infinity War style.

The Sonic comic has since rebooted and is in the competent and not-insane hands of Ian Flynn now, and Penders has since become the equally creepy and sad left wing version of Ethan Van Sciver, a formerly respected comic book creator who's now a twitter weirdo because they got themselves blackballed from the entire industry for being a crazydoodle.

There, that's everything you didn't want to know about Ken Penders.

Yeah, all the staff who were at Archie at the end of their Sonic comic run rolled over to IDW when it picked up the series. IDW's Sonic is a complete clean break from Archie's focusing on only the currently existing characters from the video games with a couple new characters created specifically for the IDW series. The old SatAM crew (Sally, Antoine, Bunny, Rotor and Nicole) were left in the dust back at Archie for better or worse, again largely to avoid another Penders situation.

Ken Penders once opened a comic with Martin Niemöller's poem about the Holocaust ("First they came for the socialists..." etc) except he made it about echidna being racist against the other animals when Dr Robotnik took over.

Weird thing about that poem, It originally said "First they came for the communists..." but the US government changed it to socialists when they used it for the US Holocaust Memorial Museum

It wasn't 1984 or especially clever, just different and dark for the time, when there weren't a whole lot of kids properties willing to get into darker (for kids) territory.

The premise was that Robotnik had taken over most of the world with his mechanical horror pollution robots, and captured the conquered population and turned them into robots with Science, overwriting their minds and personalities to become slaves, except there was a vestige of the original mind in there, so the people were kind of aware in some way of what happened to them.

And the main characters were a bunch of kids who'd escaped the takeover and were fighting Robotnik guerilla style, while occasionally encountering former loved ones who were now evil robots.

If you were ten and your alternatives were mostly Looney Tunes and Disney stuff, it was pretty awesome. Nowadays, there's more options, so it's not as clear how refreshing it was. (Kind of like how, post-Dark Age, Watchmen isn't as transcendent. Not that the two are especially comparable beyond relative darkness against their contemporaries.)
