Jisae posted:I have a 13 year old sun conure and I got her when she was 3 months old. It was the same scenario with her where I hand-fed her baby food from a spoon, mostly as a bonding experience. The first few months of owning her I would feed her and then she would wipe her beak on my neck (leaving it nice and crusty as the food dried) and promptly fall asleep cuddled up under my hair. full crop = babby nap time Also I was just talking to my bird (as you do) and mentioned how she used to eat podge off a spoon when she was little. As soon as I said 'podge', which is what we called her baby food, she hopped down off her perch, ran over and stared intently at me. I'm not one to ignore a heavy hint, so I mixed up a little of her food into a porridgy mess, offered it to her on a little spoon and do you know, she gulped it down exactly as she used to do when she was little however, she definitely did not want a second spoonful. I think she was quite disappointed that it was lentil curry and not sunshine orange breakfast.

Birds in captivity make me sad. I think most animals prefer not to live in confined space...but birds! They are pretty, but don't they want to go outside? Do you let them see other birds? I don't know. Those flamingos in dirty water bummed me out, sorry. In lighter news, there are some birds in the morning that talk talk talk, and they humor me when I try to whistle back. It's very nice of them. Go birds! eta: the talking birds live outside

Mine does go outside sometimes, and she's not really very keen on other birds; she's lived with people her whole life, so she probably sees us as her flock - you have to remember that 'birds' is a grouping like 'mammals' - interspecies friendliness is pretty unlikely unless the specific individuals grew up together. The rest of the time, they see each other as either a threat or something to ignore. As to flying, yeah. some species really need to fly and confinement is bad for them. Others are less interested in flying. My own bird is a fully flighted african grey. She hangs around the house outside her cage for several hours a day and she spends about 2 minutes of that time flying, if even that much. She prefers to climb down and walk to wherever she wants to go - maybe she's just lazy, maybe it reflects an innate preference for ground foraging, I genuinely don't know. I really hope she's content

They basically meet up and let their birds fly around and play with other birds outside. Sadly I can't do that with my own, as there are hawks everywhere where I live.
